At what point will both sides lay the guns down? Please, is this anger and hatred really necessary?

For what it's worth, I live in Huntsville so I interact with Tennessee natives on a daily basis. My workplace is full of them. We all manage to get along just fine and I honestly can't tell that they're all that much superior to regular ole Bama natives. In fact, it seems to vary on an individual to individual basis. It's almost like we're all just people - some smarter than others.

It's the damn internet that brings out the ugly in football fans.

I was meaning that "everyone" as everyone who is saying derogatory things about people who live or support the state of alabama or its university just for that reason. I'm sorry you don't understand my english. Apparently this great state of tennessee needs to step up its curriculum because I'm honestly tired of being in the bottom ten states for academic curriculum strength. If your six year old wants to correct my writing then go ahead cause this is a message board, not a term paper.

One of the courses you should take in college is logic.

You originally call everyone on the board a moron bc they were generalizing everyone from Alabama as being toothless ignorant rednecks. You then retracted your argument and said by everyone you only meant those bad mouthing and generalizing about Alabama people. So, then, following your argument, can we not also say that when we said everyone from Alabama is a toothless ignorant redneck that we really were only referring to those who are actually toothless, ignorant rednecks?

The point of this is to be careful when you make these type of generalizations, even if you don't mean it. If nothing else, I doubt your high school Christian football coach would approve.

What school do you go to that its sooo easy? Are you number one in your class? I graduated from a public school(be it the #1 in the state) and it wasn't as easy as you make it. Also UT isn't as easy to get in as it used to be. Standards are sky rocketing. Smart kids at UT is a terrible thing. You can tell as standards go up quality of people goes down. No parties library is always packed. Here is an example. There was a flash rave in the library at UT and it was deemed the greatest event of the decade. That's terrible. I want the old UT back

Born and raised in Huntville. My mom is originally from Memphis. My mom and stepfather owned cattle ranches in south central Tennesse for a while. I've been all over Alabama and Tennessee. Both states have some beautiful country and some really warmhearted and friendly people. Both states have some very intelligent people and both have some, shall I say, "ignorant" people. I've noticed that quite a few folks on Volnation like to speak about Alabama as though it is nothing but some kind of "hell hole" populated by nothing but toothless, inbred rednecks. Folks who do that are just as incorrect about Alabama as anyone would be who speaks that way about Tennessee. It's fine to be proud of Tennessee and UT, your home state and university, and it stands to reason that you'd like others to respect them. Respect is not a right, it is something that is earned. You might want to consider that the next time you "trash" another state or university.

Hey I live in AL too, so thus I have an opinion too. This state is absolutely horrible. My wife and career is the only thing keeping me here.

From Winston Groom's book on Alabama football...

Behind the "Crimson Tide" nickname and the elephant mascot are two bits of trivia that might stump even the most loyal of Alabama football fans. The team was not always referred to as the "Crimson Tide." Early newspaper accounts of Alabama football simply listed the team as the "varsity" or the "Crimson White" after the school colors. Headline writers then made popular the nickname "The Thin Red Line."

It was not until 1907 that the name "Crimson Tide" was used to describe Alabama. The name was supposedly first used by Hugh Roberts, former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald. Roberts coined the nickname to describe the 1907 Alabama - Auburn game, played in a sea of mud. Although Auburn was favored to win, Alabama played well in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6 - 6 tie, thus gaining the name "Crimson Tide." Zepp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News, probably popularized the name more than any other writer.

Big Al, Alabama's elephant mascot, certainly holds a special place in the hearts of Crimson Tide fans. Perhaps surprisingly to some fans, Alabama has not always boasted an elephant for its mascot. Coach Wallace Wade's 1930 Alabama football team was the first to be associated with the elephant. Sports writer Everett Strupper of the Atlanta Journal wrote a story of the October 4, 1930 Alabama - Mississippi game. Strupper's story called the Alabama team big, tough, fast and aggressive. Strupper also commented that the Alabama players looked " like they had nearly doubled in size" since the previous season.

"At the end of the quarter, the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow," Strupper wrote. "Some excited fan in the stands bellowed, ' Hold you horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity."

Strupper and other writers continued to refer to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants," the color referring to the Crimson jerseys. That 1930 team of "Red Elephants" posted a 10 - 0 overall record and defeated Washington State in the Rose Bowl to be declared National Champions. The costumed "Big Al" mascot was debuted in the 1979 Sugar Bowl, when the Tide beat Penn State University for the national championship. Since then, the mascot has been a fan favorite for the Tide fans.

Additionally, on the 1926 trip to the Rose Bowl, the luggage company hired by the team was the Birmingham Trunk Company, and they have a little elephant logo very similar to big al, and this was seen along the various stops on the train trip, but the above story is biggest reason.

When I was a kid, my parents would always take me on a winter trip to Gatlinburg. I remember it being some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever witnessed. I have always had good things to say about Tennessee, although I am a die hard Bama fan. I live in Alabama and have the privilege of driving around making home computer calls. Let me tell you about some of the breathtaking scenery I have witnessed right here in this beautiful state. Tennessee has more to do with places like Gatlinburg and the Smokies, but we Alabama natives take pride in our state and love to call it home. Just because we don't see eye to eye with our beloved universities, please, lets not take it out on the beautiful states, and mostly wonderful people living there :)
