I have driven from Memphis, TN to Rogers, AR give or take a hundred times. That's taking I-40 all the way across the state. I-40 was concrete slabs that felt like driving on a washboard. I can't tell you the missery of hours of hearing/feeling thaaa-thunk, thaaa-thunk, thaaa-thunk.
They've replaced all the slabs with asphalt. It's a really nice stretch of interstate now.
I'll echo that. Years ago, from Memphis to Little Rock was about the worst stretch of road I have ever exprienced. It was terrible because it was a constant up and down feeling as you coasted down the road. Seriously, every second, you would bounce up and the sound would get so annoying, you would have to turn your radio wide open.
However, as mentioned, the road system has been upgraded and now is pretty comfortable to drive on.
Mississippi, on the other hand, simply can't figure it out. At one point, they used to spend twice as much money on their prison system as they did on education. Instead of educating the public and keeping them out of prisons, they just built more prisons for the criminals. How hard is it to figure that one out. Then again, we are talking about a state that sucks so badly that the trees in Tennessee lean towards the south.
They don't salt their highways during an ice or snow storm and rarely clean up the shredded tires from the 18 wheelers who often travel the roads.
When I first married my wife, we lived in Mississippi and when we bought a new SUV, the license plate fee was $1,000. I was used to paying about $40 in Tennessee so it blew my mind. I used to ask the locals where all that money went and why they didn't put more money into their road systems.
This makes me wonder how in the world those frat boys from UM could yell out stuff like "Hillbillies" and the typical "we are better than you" garbage that I heard in 96 when we played them at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis during the regular season. At the end of the game, we had won with a score of something like 42-10 and they were still running their mouths. It was at that point that I realized that Ole Miss fans had long ago given up on their football team being good and had resorted to trying to make sure that they had the better party atmosphere instead of the better football team.
One time my wife's friend, an Ole Miss alumni, and I were arguing over football and she resorted to talking about traition when she realized UM was outclassed by UT in football. She claimed that they were better because they had more tradition. She claimed that this was because every single male student had voluntered to fight in the Civil War in the 1860's. First, I said "really, they
VOLUNTEERED", and then I just laughed and told her how pathetic it was that tradition was all she could come back with.
However, they might be a tough one on the road this year so I will wait till after that game to say too much to her.
Anyway, to get ack to my original point, Ark roads used to be terrible but are now much improved.
