Observation about Alabama

I can only hope that true because when I drove from TN to AZ 10 years go Arkansas was the worst on any state I crossed (except for the few miles before/after Hope)

I have driven from Memphis, TN to Rogers, AR give or take a hundred times. That's taking I-40 all the way across the state. I-40 was concrete slabs that felt like driving on a washboard. I can't tell you the missery of hours of hearing/feeling thaaa-thunk, thaaa-thunk, thaaa-thunk.

They've replaced all the slabs with asphalt. It's a really nice stretch of interstate now.

I lived in Knoxville for the majority of my life. Love it. The Best! I also lived in Fairhope, AL. Friends...one of the greatest places on earth. The people are amazing and the bay is absolutely wonderful. I love both states...but I hate the Crimson.

folks, i just made a weekend trip to Atlanta from Memphis, which meant driving thru bama for a good 4 hours. well apart from trees and nothing else, i ended up seeing a million Bingo places. i know we make fun of their primitive ways and such, but it was just weird seeing our stereotypes in person. literally nothing there except for a bingo place every corner. hope this fuels a meaningful and foul mouthed discussion about our single digit toothed friends down in AL.

Go Vols!

Next time just take I-40 to I-24 to I-75. Time-wise, it's about the same. Bypass Mississippi and Alabama completely.

incorrect on bingo, i only know about 5 bingo places.
I think I was in the Adamsville-Westwood area when I went to B'ham's beer festival about 2 months when me and my buddy noticed there were about 5 bingo halls for every mile.

I-59 from Gadsden to the AL-GA state line has to be the worst-paved stretch of interstate in America. The stretch you mentioned is also awful. It's like driving on a gravel road in most of that state.

I couldnt agree more. That stretch is absolutely horrible. Its been that way on that stretch for YEARS! You have to stay in the left lane the whole time if you want a somewhat smooth ride.

However, the roads in Tennessee are nothing to write home about either....especially Chattanooga!!!!

 you have to stay in the left lane or you'll get kidney damage.

Born and raised in Huntville. My mom is originally from Memphis. My mom and stepfather owned cattle ranches in south central Tennesse for a while. I've been all over Alabama and Tennessee. Both states have some beautiful country and some really warmhearted and friendly people. Both states have some very intelligent people and both have some, shall I say, "ignorant" people. I've noticed that quite a few folks on Volnation like to speak about Alabama as though it is nothing but some kind of "hell hole" populated by nothing but toothless, inbred rednecks. Folks who do that are just as incorrect about Alabama as anyone would be who speaks that way about Tennessee. It's fine to be proud of Tennessee and UT, your home state and university, and it stands to reason that you'd like others to respect them. Respect is not a right, it is something that is earned. You might want to consider that the next time you "trash" another state or university.

North Alabama = Nice
everything below Decatur = Deliverance

As someone that has lived here for 10 years, there certainly are some beautiful places and nice folks. The roads definitely could use some attention though.

I was watching Tosh.O on comedy central the other night. The host, Daniel Tosh had two Alabama jokes in about a 5 minute span. The first was a crack at Nick Saban, calling him a sellout. Then he showed a clip of some jackass cutting down a tree, and the tree falling on his house. He made an alabama joke about those people too.

I tried, and tried...but I couldn't find the clips (with his commentary) online. But the show is pretty funny, and he gets bonus points for mocking Bama.

I do like Orange Beach. Some nice folks too, although most are transplants.

IMO, Orange Beach and Gulf Shores suck! The water is ugly, and not much to do. Its amazing how much clearer the water is just when you cross over into Florida.

However, if you've never been to FLORA-BAMA, then you're missing out on quite an experience.

haha! good one. :)

welcome to VN.

Thanks Lady. Been a Vol fan a looong time and even though FL is the focus of hate for some of the younger crowd ( myself too) I was raised to despise AL. Soo...What's the first thing a girl from AL says after sex? "Git up diddy you're smashing my cigarettes".

Then you haven't been around much. In one stretch outside of Birmingham going to Memphis there at least five per mile. I've never seen so many bingo halls. It looked like an Alabama version of the Vegas strip.

incorrect, i may not notice them because i don't give a damn about bingo.

+1

Trashing an entire state = ignorance at its finest. Tennessee has some beautiful country, but its population is made up of the exact same type of people who live in Alabama. Alabama has beautiful country as well, ranging from mountains in the north to one of the best beaches in the world in the south.

Last time I went to Birmingham it smelled like old lady ass

Yeah FloriBama was a blast. Crazy place with an even crazier layout! Its like that picture that gets passed around of the mobile home sitting on top of another mobile home sitting on top of another mobile home hahaha. Its just a mess, like addition after addition after addition!

What would you describe the smell to be that hangs over memphis?

We don't claim Memphis. It's just there. :) Kind of like the "relative that no one talks about" as far as cities of Tennessee go.

Tell me about it though. I-20 is awful not only because it feels like you're driving across railroad tracks the entire way, but also because it goes through Tuscaloosa.

Guys, guys, I will concede that the roads in Bama suck and I-59/ I-20 are horrible but the scenery in Bama is good if you know where to go. Birmingham, aside from all of the corrupt and incompetent politicians, is very similar to Knoxville with maybe a little better diversity of food. As you go South it gets worse until you get to the coast. Don't hold the state in contempt because of UA.

Tidal, this diatribe is true of all the fan bases in the SEC. It is one of the great ironies of South Eastern Conference Football, every other team and state is full of ignorant rednecks while yours is full of Nobel Laureates and scholars.

Correction - You don't claim Memphis.

Back in '94-'96, I worked in the Memphis area and a guy I worked with from Memphis said that the city didn't claim to be a part of TN. He said they should be part of Miss. or Ark. I told him:
"DAMN RIGHT!"
