The top-10 matchups during the regular season can be fairly in-bred within conferences. I will readily agree that college football has an amazing regular season...but the best team probably doesn't always end up with the trophy....though that isn't guaranteed in any playoff. I would prefer an 8-team tourney...but a plus one would solve most problems.
If the best team won the trophy every time, USC would have a couple more. Too bad for them. They play in an awful conference most years and still manage to lose a game or two. They know the stakes of each game and still come up short. It's not the fault of the BCS. It's USC's.
I don't think an 8 team beauty contest would devalue the regular season tremendously. Making the top 8 is one helluva chore. It would definitely devalue a conference championship, however.Exactly . . . If you want to screw up the best regular season in all of sports, institute a playoff system with more than 2 rounds.

auto berths is a problem today, when the Big 10, Big East and ACC have no business getting any. That situation happens every year.Ummm... not if they would simply tie the playoff spots in with the winners of the conferences and leave either 2 or 3 at large bids. Make all the conferences with guaranteed spots play a championship game to determine their winner. That way there would be 5 or 6 conferences with automatic berths, and then the other spots would be filled by the highest ranked non-champs.

the problem with that logic is the fact that the best eight teams aren't in the dance. The bias in auto entry is a problem because it precludes the best eight teams as often as it doesn't.That argument can easily be made, but if that's the case, then they will be eliminated in the first game, and the best teams will be there at the end.

the guys vying to be 66,67,68 have a much weaker argument for winning the whole shebang than those at 8,9,10.It's the same with the NCAA basketball tournament. Every year there are deseerving teams left out because of auto-entrants winning their conference tourney. I realize that it's a little different with 64 teams as opposed to 8, but still the logic is the same. If you want a shot at the NC, win your conference.
