O & W Game - Was it coaching or.....

is it just me who thought that for the first time in years that our team looked well-coached...I sat there and tried to keep reminding myself "This is just a spring scrimmage - don't read something into it just because of last year" but I really believe that the coaching was so superior to what I've seen in the past that it was obvious. The players actually looked like they knew what they were doing throughout the game. Then, again, maybe I'm just such a die-hard fan who wants to see the progress that I sincerely believe is just on the horizon - as in THIS FALL - that I just came up with something to put myself on a high.....Can't wait to experience the euphoria that is coming this fall - and it is most definitely coming - mark it down......

I think they looked like they knew what they were doin but remember that the defence was held to a certain amount of plays bc they didnt wont to show all of the plays on TV. But they did look alot better than Bama i thought!

The team looked well coached. Everything they did was organized. Even the warm ups. They stretched and warmed up as a team in formation. Fulmer never did that before a game he just let them run around and toss footballs back and forth until the position coaches came out.

Everything that Kiffin has done so far seems organized and crisp.

I also liked the fact that CLK was out on the field coaching them during the O&W. I do not recall CPF ever doing that.

i think a lot of us were so tired of the fulmer way, that any new way might have the perception of being better, if only because it's different.

the reality, the defense was handcuffed, the head coach knew what defenses were called, and he was calling the plays.

i think they only thing you could have taken away from the spring game is if anyone, especially offensively, just played horribly. fortunately that didn't happen, so mission accomplished up to this point.

but the coaching will come to pass starting in the fall. that's when we'll find out about their game planning, play calling and whether or not this team looks prepared, and executes with the high level of energy they've displayed thus far.

Maybe Clawson should have been on the field calling the plays and lining up WRs, LOL.

I think things are going fine.

Yeah, but he did that because he had to. They have been so busy the past few months getting everything going including the new offense, terminology etc... that the qbs are not at the point they can call the plays with Kiffin on the sideline.

they don't have the signals from the sidelines in yet... but I thought that was pretty cool, watching him coach up the players like that:rock:

The first time he ran the ball, I noticed that Coach Kiffin jumped him pretty good and he came out and Coach Gran chewed him pretty good as he got to the sideline. Does anyone know what happened? Poole gained 10 or 12 yards i think.

I assumed they were upset because he was making too many moves side to side. It seemed to be a point of emphasis in one segment of the short documentary they showed at halftime: not making multiple moves in the hole. I wish I knew the real answer.

Coach Gran is a big believer in not dancing and running full steam ahead until the defense stops you. You can't gain positive yardage moving side to side.

It's only going to get better! This coaching staff has done an outstanding job with this team and building their confidence. I like that Kiffin let the offense get some points on the board and the defense was limited. Because I think our Offense needs some confidence more than the defense. We will be awesome on D this year, our coach is too good not to be.

But regardless of what the Defense could do or not, some of the catches and runs in that scrimmage were done with D players in position to make a play and the offense won the battle. From my opinion scrimmage or not this team is making great strides on offense.
If we can just find a Qb who can lead the team and not make costly turnovers I think we will surprise some teams this year.

They would not let the defense blitz or stunt, and were limited to a handfull of defensive fronts! If they had turned the defense loose you would have seen that our offense is still weak! :mf_surrender:

I am glad to hear this...I did not get to make it to the game and the one thing that always really gets under my skin is that Fulmer never had them strech together as a team...They did line up and do something real quick but nothing formally...This is a good thing and from what I got to see on the tube at home , the team looked like they were eager to play the next play...Last year it almost looked like they were waiting for the game to just be over (kind of like the fans)...Not these guys but it is just spring so you really never know

1st, you have a basketball icon to tag your post in a thread about the FOOTBALL spring game.

and if you bothered to read, i clearly stated the defense was handcuffed, so the only thing you could've really taken away from the offense's performance was if they just sucked. they didn't. they shouldn't have. mission accomplished.

I was wondering about that as well. I watched the play several times and he cut well into the hole but then started dancing once into the second level and cut into the middle into pursuit and no blocking versus a quick cut to the side-line where he had a receiver blocking down the CB. With a cut to the side-line he would have had a lot more yards and a possible score. That, I think, is what all the fuss was about after what otherwise looked like a good run. This staff wants big plays and obviously do not take missing big play opportunities lightly.

I took the most satisfaction out of the play of the o-line. They looked more explosive off the line then last year, they got down field, they moved well laterally and they did not give up the LOS to the D very often. I'm not as worried about the o-line run blocking as I was after last year's miserable showing. Pass blocking may be another issue, but at least it looks like we should be able to run the ball more effectively then we did last year.

I loved the freakin' I formation. How long has it been since we've seen the deep I at Tennessee???? One play out of the I the fullback just crushed the linebacker at the hole and sprung Williams for a nice gain. WoooooHoooo!!!!! That's physical football!!!
