Wasn't able to go the game. Found this video of the QB play. Based on what I see, were going to have to find a starter for this year from the portal. Merk seems like he isn't seeing the field very well. Made several poor reads and errant throws. GMac looks like a very talented QB but he's not very experienced or very big, so idk he'll be able to hold up. Not sure who's going to be available but I believe we need to find someone with experience at least for this year.

Thanks for posting the video!

As for portal expectations... I think it's all there in your own words. You expressed concerns about Merk making poor reads and not seeing the whole field (which our offense arguably doesn't require), but he's had 2 years in the program, learning this offense every day. GMac has had 3 very intense months of learning it. Neither has been getting starter reps (...for some reason, that I've now forgotten) in Spring practice.

The point being: are they not going to be far, far ahead of anyone they can bring in from the portal?

Now, if the challenges for Merk and GMac were arm strength--sure, we might be looking to gain a starter from the portal.

But that's not the case. What we need from the portal is someone who can become a viable third-string QB by August, and maybe--maybe--compete against GMac for the backup role. But Heupel wanted GMac out of that entire class of QBs, so we know he sees in that kid someone capable of executing his offense to a national championship.

Heupel just couldn't see that the timeline for development was going to jump ahead 2 years overnight.

My thing is Merk was making some flat out dangerous throws into tight coverage and it was a consistent thing I noticed. I think GMac looked better but that's a lot to ask of a true freshman to take the reigns. I really think we need to seriously entertain an experienced starter

Disagree with the OP. I think both QB looked fine yesterday. Of course they made a few bad throws, but made many good ones and made good decisions for the most part.

We don't need a starter. We need a QB for insurance purposes. A 2nd or 3rd string type
Thats your opinion and youre entitled to it. I trust my own based on what I saw.

I remember Hendon looking rather poor in an Orange and White game. Also remember Harrison Bailey being crowned as the next great thing after a good Orange and White performance. Time will tell.
Facts.

I wrote Hendon off, and next thing you know he was balling. That Pittsburgh game was so weird in 2021.
- should have been 35-0 fist half but Milton overthrew every pass in the end zone.
- Pitts QB went on a tear and then they’re up big plus Milton goes down.
- Hendon comes and looks AWFUL his first drive- pick!
- Then slowly but surely Hendon Hooker gets into a rhythm and the games becomes close again

It's hard to read much into these. I thought everyone looked pretty good. You have to remember with rules of who can or can't be hit, the fact it's a practice etc...a lot of this stuff is going to look bad/slow. Just remember it's not a real game, it's a practice. It's going to look a lot different in a real game.

You think going out and finding a new guy that has never been in a single practice with our scheme, developed any sort of team chemistry, or anything is the best bet?

No problem. I trust mine as well.

I trust the coaches will make the right decision either way
Actually. After looking at that
A few things:
- Merk was going against 1st defense but his processing was super slow. It didn't used to be that way.
- Mac was much more natural and saw the field better. They ran the same plays.

The difference between the two.
- Merk has been getting coached by Halzle for 16 months
- Mac 4 months

Halzle is going to be the end of Heupel...
He about ruined Nico, and now Merklinger is his latest victim.

Bring back Gaston Moore if possible.
IMO he would be a good backup as he knows the offense and players if he had to come for a few plays etc. However he left for playing time so he probably would not be interested in a backup role again. I don't see throwing a portal QB who is not familiar with the O into the fire in Sept as any better than what the current situation is.

We also have stud freshman QB coming in so he may can get some game reps.

Here you go with that horrible take… I guess him being the Qb coach had nothing to do with hendon and joe developing… you have to stop looking at high school and think that the Qb will be the same in college… our defense is fast and made QBs with much more experience than merk look pedestrian last year… all things considered with Nico leaving merk may have very well been pressing with a new found opportunity we will see how they continue to develop along with whatever transfer portal Qb we take… hazle has assisted with McKenzie Milton, Sam Bradford, Drew lock, hendon hooker, and Dillon Gabriel and you think he don’t know how to develop good Qb play like humble your self please.
