O-line theory

the 1st series i saw him play against VT, after weisman was put in at center, the vols ran right and picked up big yardage and then hit the bomb. 90 yds. in 90 seconds. was it coincidence ? CBJ may rightfully base players ability on what goes on the practice field but their is a certain chemistry about some of our vols that can't be denied. i think JJ and sherion J simply have a higher degree of adrenaline flow that causes them to be all business. in order for the surge to kick in, the atmosphere of the lights, screaming fans at neyland, etc...jacks them up. this doesn't occur on the practice field. therefore it can't be measured. if over 90% of posters on VN want JJ to start and play more it's because they SEEEEE the dawg come out at the proper time.....case closed. play JJ !!!

If you think of the good OL's Mizzou has had in the past few years.... they weren't characterized by a bunch of 5* with great talent and NFL potential. They were just nasty and mean. They got on their blocks and stayed on them until a half count after the whistle.

Jack Jones seems to be like that. UT's other OL's don't seem to be though strangely I think Robertson used to be.

Maybe UT should just find the 5 meanest OL's they have and work with them?

HALL seems to have some dog in him but guards are expected to pull and should be a little faster on their feet. seems that JJ is a great fit at RG imo. if i recall, last years bama game had jones playing beside hall on the right. i thought they played one helluva a game for being freshman. The UT coaching staff can be sandbagging big time and they know this and don't want to show it. i'd like to think that's the case but my gut tells me that debord is just slow at deciding....or maybe it's a weekly match-up thing.

I HAVE to think there's something to the 2 things you mention, slow decision making & a weekly matchup thing going on. Weekly matchups are part and parcel of what coaching staffs are supposed to be doing on the regular. The slow decision making and it is strictly an armchair observation based on nothing more than my experiences, is part of what CBJ is all about. We see him regularly do the "Ive got you're back you got my back" chant. I think that may be in his core. If it is he does not throw kids under the bus quickly or easily. Hence why we see players week in and week out starting after very poor games on both offense and defense. There's simply no way Thomas sees the field on any other SEC team week 2 after his horrible performance game one for example. The same can be said for Jumper on defense, we constantly see this youngster on the field when he blows play after play when on it. So seeing upper class men under performing yet still starting seems to be part and parcel of who CBJ is. Granted if a youngster is so good you can't keep him off the field, we'll see him and that example is D Barnett, but it is sort of rare. To my mind Jack Jones starts somewhere on the OL until he shows he cannot do it. Thomas sits until well or performs better. Next OL that under performs, Boulware goes in, we shift personnel around and he does not come out until he bombs out. Jones and Boulware have the dog we need in them and some of upper classmen better get it fast or sit down.

This appears to be a common opinion on VN....where did it come from? He looked tough on his HS highlights, but in his limited playing at UT I've not seen anything from him that would lead me to believe he's any "tougher" than the rest of that position group?

Hopefully its there and I've missed it - please enlighten me.

Watch the UGA last year when Jones went in. Also watch the VT game when he went in.
