GOP blocks bill to stop terrorists from buying guns | MSNBC
And they did it the day after the San Bernardino massacre.
Every single one of them should immediately be impeached. There is absolutely no rational line of thought that can justify this vote.
Let's take a breath.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're against profiling/stereotyping Muslims because they're Muslims, but ready to do just that if it involves possessing a firearm based upon the No-Fly list, known for its irrevocably injudicious denial and harassment of people? For example, even after DHS Sec. Tom Ridge personally intervened to have Sen. TKennedy removed from the list, it took three weeks. How long would you or I be on that list? Or a Muslim citizen? Perpetually. This bill's defeat is not synonymous with terrorists being able to buy guns.
If you still think it a good idea to deny people who may be on the NF or Terror Watchlist, how long do you deny them rights? Interminable denial, a la Gitmo? Better to not let them in at all or deport them than pollute our justice system with that inconsistency while assuring ourselves we're 'free' and 'diverse'.
Compounding the problem are the presence of "nose under the tent, let's show them the rest of the camel" Schumer at the bargaining table, and "ban 'em (but I'm armed)" Feinstein, both longstanding bad faith negotiators on gun issues. You want thoughtful, considered proposals then send people with those traits to deal.
Consider another organization that would have a problem with the (defeated) bill since it's the same Manchin-Toomey bill defeated in 2013. The ACLU opposed the universal background checks proposal on privacy and separate & unequal justice concerns:
https://www.aclu.org/news/aclu-statement-senate-gun-control-package and has taken the government to court over No-Fly grievances:
https://www.aclu.org/cases/latif-et-al-v-holder-et-al-aclu-challenge-government-no-fly-list Having been defeated before, this was a show vote, nothing more.
People's rights should not conform to speculative or sensationalist soundbites, and it isn't quite as simple as yelling "NRA! Republicans!". Politico details the bill & amendments up for vote:
