I thought the stigma of Josh Smiths being less talented would have died off by now.

Josh Smith has been our fastest WR since he came to UT.

HES VERY TALENTED.
Hes got hands, hes tough. Acrobatic, and very quick.

Hes an NFL talent...

I was afraid my phrasing might give that impression. He is very talented and productive, but he lacks the obvious measurables that some other high profile receivers have come in with. I love Josh Smith and think he may be the most consistent WR we've had since around 2007. With Josh, you know what you're going to get. I agree with much of your assessment of Josh's skills, except maybe the top end speed. I believe he could sneak into the league and eventually excel as a slot (a la Julian Edelman/Wes Welker). The distinction I was trying to make was simply that his talents were less obvious coming in.

I glad you're joking and not truly offended , but I knew when I mentioned two white NFL slots, someone would say something like that. They really are the two most obvious slot players for the point I was making.

All of our newcomers at WR look good right now. They just got here more or less.

This past spring Jeff George looked good.

Malone first spring he looked good...5 star good.

I have a feeling next year,

unless Azzani is gone...these new wrs who look so good right now, will have regressed by that time.

North also looked great his freshman year.

Sorry about the negativity...
I just don't understand how he can take so much talent and waste it...
Where have you been? It was even said before he got here that his players regressed. And we've witnessed it first hand, with the exception of Josh Smith

Yet he only catches 1 or 2 balls a game. Something isn't adding up. Why isn't Dobbs targeting him more if he is so good. Is it because he isn't getting open? Does it have anything to do with our constant WR rotation. When the coaching staff said 3 of the 4 most talented WRs on this team are freshman who was the non freshman they were referring to? Does the coaching staff consider Josh Smith to be more talented than Preston Williams, Juan Jennings, and Josh Malone?

From what I've seen, Josh Smith is best suited to play in the slot. Unfortunately, injuries have forced him to play more as a wide out. He's better between the hashes on crosses and drags.

I'm not replying to all of those replies.

Sorry. Its just too much writing. But your responses are important. (No blue font)

This is year 4. We should have seen major improvement year before last in WR play.

Yes all those other factors mentioned matter as well.

The coach can't be blamed for dropped passes, good lord. If you think our passing game is lackluster (I'm on the fence); then I would look towards our offensive philosophy's reliance on run scheming for explanations of a lack of production.

IMO we have to much of a rotation among them. They need to be in a rhythm and get going. The injuries also forced some young guys into early playing time maybe before they were ready. Find your best guys and ride it out.

Bingo! Pick the best 4 or so receivers and stick with em. Let them all battle for the top spots

I predict U.T. comes out machine-gunning the ball to multiple receivers and people forget all about the running backs until it's too late. I think we are going to toss the ball this year guys.

I wonder if he is trying to master his craft or not?

I don't hear any changes in his coaching tactics.

"Pump and Pull"
"Stay low and drive"

I heard him try to correct B Johnson before a rep( something about how his hands were

Johnson didnt change anything and just ran his route and he looked good.

I think Azzani needs to stop changing some many of these kids natural tendencies so much. He's training them all the same way.... But they are different types of Wrs.

AND he's putting to much instruction into simple movements.

It's like hes not learning...
Or EVOLVING as a WR coach

He wants them to put their hands down by their side for some reason, I've never seen that.

He is def the worst coach on the team and possibly the SEC, I would rather have a GA coaching that position than him.

Thing is all of our wrs have had injury problems. I think part Of it is Azzanis mechanical style of playing WR.

I'm not a big fan of his, but that's one of the crazier things I've read lately.

I have both played and coached wr. Coach z had similar reviews in his time at Florida if I'm not mistaken. Look at production during Kippy Brown era.

While I agree there's several factors to pass judgement.but when habitats occur yearly fingers start pointing usually to the coach. It's definitely debatable and reoccurring

Routes are learned from habits. Habits are learned in film study and practice. Practice is taught by the coach.

It should also be noted that we saw noticeable improvement from the wr unit when Butch , wr coach at heart, stepped in mid season and put his hands on the unit. Also not helping Z's case.

Things also seemed not rhythmic since he was deemed passing coordinator. Another debatable topic.

All in all. Great personality guy, good eye for talent, good recruiter, average at best teacher of talent imo.

The wr stance I have questioned since I saw it. Stance should be developed to fit the individuals build and comfort coming off the ball not just a unit.

Hope we are all wrong and coach Z proves us all wrong but many questions at this point. So here's to coach Z for most improved unit this year! Go vols
