Noticed on Second Viewing

The 3rd place thing was pandering to the bowl system in my estimation. Too bad ESPN ignores the truth for its promotional purposes. But isn't that what media outlets do these days?

Didn't one of the announcers when discussing Mckenzie at the beginning of the game say that his father is GM for the Ravens? Could have sworn he said that. Then one of them said Hurd was 220.

Yeah, he sure did. But he corrected himself a bit later in the game.

And they also called Kamara (215 lb) a "little back" at one point, not long after calling NU's Jackson a "bruising runner" (185 lb). :)

And they initially said that the Battle at Bristol next year should have "130,000 to 140,000 in attendance," but did come back later and say that they were corrected and it could be over 150,000. :good!:

When did y'all feel confident we won the game? For me, I got nervous when the second string came in. I kept thinking "are you sure coach?? Are you positive we're ok?" LOL It was about four minutes left on the clock when it hit me the game was over.

Yeah, Vollygirl, I was still a bit uneasy at that point, too (that was about 11 minutes left in the game, I think the score was 24-6 or 31-6). I never got really confident the whole time we led by 18...but when we went up by 25, then I was sure we had it locked down. :good!:

[*]How did ESPN get the SEC East standings wrong? (see screenshot). I did notice this during the bowl live, but was too focused on the game to bother with it. Now, I'm like, WTH, aren't you guys supposed to know how the conferences do this stuff?

They've been getting it wrong much of the season. For some reason, they arbitrarily decided that Georgia wins a tie-breaker with us by having a better overall record, even though, the tie-breaker is actually our head-to-head victory. Looks like they finally corrected it on the ESPN website, but I know they had Georgia above us for a long time. You'd think a company with ESPN's resources could find a way to have their standings automatically "break the tie" for teams with head-to-head games, but apparently not.

Cats defense was keyed on stopping Josh Dobbs from running. That was their #1 goal in the early parts of the game. Consequently, they were less prepared for passes to TEs, Hurd's runs up their gut, and Kamara off the edges.

This game showcased just how much better the rest of the team has become over the year. I'm not sure that Northwestern's strategy wasn't the "right one" back in September or October. Our O-line has improved immensely as the season has progressed, however, and completely dominated NW's defense. IMO, that's one of the big reasons they had difficulty stopping us everywhere.

Jon Gruden in the 2nd Qtr: "You watch, this is gonna go down to the 4th Qtr, NU is not gonna go away." Hehe, even good guys can be wrong at times.

I'm going to chalk that one up to announcer-speak (there's coach-speak, so there should also be announcer-speak.) Announcers have a natural incentive to promote viewership for the game, and tough to do that if you say, "Tennessee is kicking the crap out of Northwestern at the line of scrimmage and I see this game turning into a blowout." Not that Gruden knew it would be a blowout that bad, but I didn't particularly feel like he was expressing his "real analysis" there.

[*]Best 6 plays of the game: Hurd's double stiff-arm, Dobbs' tightwire run, and the 4 INTs. All explosive and fun to watch.

Definitely. Nice to see our DBs finally get rewarded this game, but that Dobbs' tightwire run was insane. It looked like he would be out at about the 10 yard line for sure, and he somehow manages to get an extra 10 yards and a touchdown out of that?! Still in awe on that one.

It's right on their sites but I agree the plugs during the games showing that are annoying.

I look at the points scored by us against a pretty tough schedule, and I wonder why people are down on DeBord. I have been pretty pleased with our offense all year, with the exception of going conservative too early in some games. That is partly on DeBord, partly on Jones, and partly on the players in equal amounts I think. Overall though the offense was pretty good even in the games we lost.

And when Berry intercepted that ball, I jumped up and down the entire way!! My favorite play this entire year. What a way to end the season!!

When they announced the match up.

I had absolutely no respect for Northwestern after watching them several times during the season including the Stanford game.

There wasn't a single phase of the game or a match up where they had a clear cut advantage.

Some notes I jotted while watching the Outback Bowl for the second time. In chronological order:

  • How did ESPN get the SEC East standings wrong? (see screenshot). I did notice this during the bowl live, but was too focused on the game to bother with it. Now, I'm like, WTH, aren't you guys supposed to know how the conferences do this stuff?

  • We wore "91" stickers on our helmets during the game, in honor of Doug Atkins. Didn't notice that until the re-watch.

  • This one game--just one game out of 13--caused Northwestern to fall from the 7th scoring defense in the nation, down to the 12th position. One game, loss of five spots. That's a big swing at the end of the season. Think the Vols offense put a dent in their defensive pride. NOTE: If all 13 of NU's games this year had been against the Vols, and all 13 games had ended up 45-6, they wouldn't be the 12th scoring defense in the nation; they would be the 128th, worst in FBS.
  • Cats defense was keyed on stopping Josh Dobbs from running. That was their #1 goal in the early parts of the game. Consequently, they were less prepared for passes to TEs, Hurd's runs up their gut, and Kamara off the edges. Remember the NU fans saying in the forum that they weren't worried about Hurd and Kamara, they'd seen good runners before, that stopping Dobbs' legs would be key to the game? It's like their coaching staff was thinking exactly the same thing. How wrong they were....
  • Jon Gruden in the 2nd Qtr: "You watch, this is gonna go down to the 4th Qtr, NU is not gonna go away." Hehe, even good guys can be wrong at times.
  • Was an interesting feeling, with 5:34 left in the 2nd Qtr, just after NU's touchdown (and missed xp), to realize that the purple team would not score again, in any way, for the rest of the game, while the vast majority of Tennessee's points were still to come.
  • Heh, Kamara and Dobbs have this funny little thing where they shake hands like businessmen. It is amusing to see after all the dancing and dabbing, to see them suddenly tone it down and shake. :)
  • Rod Gilmore is a goof. Haven't even gotten to the part about him complaining we "ran up the score"; it's just halftime and he has already caved on an earlier point: he started the game saying it was "Tennessee's speed versus Northwestern's power"; by the start of the 2nd half, he was saying Tennessee was delivering "as we expected" speed and power in the running game.
  • Our guys ran to the other end of the field at the end of the 3rd Qtr. For those who were worried about this earlier in the year, I didn't see anyone pass out from exhaustion.
  • Best 6 plays of the game: Hurd's double stiff-arm, Dobbs' tightwire run, and the 4 INTs. All explosive and fun to watch.

It was fun to re-watch; I do recommend it. :good!:

Did you notice how the commentators would ask Gruden how he felt about this and that? They sounded so awkward lol.

I noticed the 91 first thing. Thought the announcers would acknowledge the death of DA. Did I miss it?

Nope, unfortunately Doug Atkins passing was never mentioned in the broadcast. It could've been a nice opportunity to acknowledge one of the greatest college and pro football players ever...JMO

Me too. But wouldn't have expected those clowns to know who he was.

Super unnecessary comment. Douchebaggish actually. I very much appreciated OP's post.

Unnecessary post. The honorable defender of our freedom exposed and stomped the life out of that douchebaggery many posts ago. It was as beautiful as our bowl game too. :good!:

Nobody mentioned it, so I must have been overserved, but it seemed to me when watching it again that the Vols had some new moves (dance moves, almost) after scores.

I think I used the term "boatraced" several times the Sunday the bowls were announced. Purple Vandy was exactly what I thought they were.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to loosen up my shoulder... This back is not gonna pat itself.

You must have a different ESPN Channel than I have. Because I have watched it twice and it was never mentioned or I totally drowned out Rod Gilmore

I never heard them mention it, either. Which is a pity. Pretty confident the Vols Sports Info folks probably gave them some talking points pre-game that would surely have included a note about the "91" sticker and honoring Doug's life.
