Nothing Lame about Lane...

Wow, are you really relating their appearence to the knowledge of their profession? Talk about moronic and childesh.

Some people in this place need to grow up.

The fact is, Griff obviously doesn't drink from the same orange kool-aid bowl as some of you do and instead of listening to the facts and points he makes, you go all, "huh, how dar you be negativea bout ma Volz, you dont no nuttin bout dem so shudub!"

I don't agree with everything Griff writes but I appreciate his professional opinion and I agree with him more times than not. Keep them coming Mike.

You use the word professional very liberally there.

Good question

There isn't a correlation between turnovers and Monte's salary -- and that's the problem

I'm still not completely convinced it was a good idea to move Eric Berry into the box...as you saw the last game, Eric produced a turnover when he wasn't locked into run defense

I think Monte has figured that out and you will probably see more of Berry outside of the box after the Alabama game

Hindsight is always 20-20....

We knew the Vols offense would struggle this year, much like it did last year

We knew the defense would be called upon to win games

So while the defense hasn't "lost" any games this season, I don't think it has won any either. Auburn was an opportunity, but no turnovers.

I don't know that last year's staff would have done any better....they didn't last year when it came to results.

Maybe last year's staff would have produced more turnovers, but then, maybe teams would have run better against the Vols in that scenario with Berry deep, too -- who knows?

All I know is that if you have the highest paid defensive staff in the country, one would expect the results would follow, and so far, UT hasn't beat anyone it wasn't supposed to beat.

I do think the Vols' defense will close very strong -- I have gone on record saying I don't think another team will score 26 points on UT this season

I think the defensive coaches are getting a feel for their personnel, and I think Monte is getting a better idea how to fit everything in a 20-hour practice week.

It takes time to adjust.

The coaches have all been very good to me in all of my interviews and I've had all the access I have requested and/or needed.

In fact, there's been more access this year than there has been in four or five years....Lane's a pro.

I don't like being misrepresented as someone who doesn't like or respect the current staff -- that's simply not true.

But in evaluating any staff, respect or like or whatever, I try to stay objective and call it like I see it.

I've been wrong a couple of times -- I thought Monte would shut down Malzahn, and I thought the Vols would beat the Bruins.

I wrote before the season I saw nine wins, and after the W. Ky. game I changed it to eight wins.

I still see eight wins.

That's my take on stuff, right from the horse's mouth.

It's clear some people don't want me to post blogs, but that's what I do because I like MOST of the feedback on VolNation.

It would be stupid for me to write posts/analysts here but not on my newspaper's website, so of course I post it there first because those are the folks who get me the credentials for access, and they like us to blog in addition to our stories/reports.

It's not about anything other than that. I post my articles on other sites, too, but I have a great deal more give-and-take here than anywhere else.

So a few bullies who make personal attacks and stalk me (Hat, please don't follow me to the point you know what kind of dip I tried at Rays 3 months ago! That's scary man) aren't gonna keep me from chatting with the folks in here who have given me some good insights and angles

How many offers have you had to run defenses in either college or pro? How many teams have paid you millions to run their defense? How many teams have paid you a lot of money to work with their coaches?

That's what I thought. I think I will stick with Monte on this one.

buncha blind faith, pizza delivering, spoiled fans :eek:lol:

Could the Vols' basketball fans be getting spoiled, too?
We already know the football fans are.

I find it amusing when I read message boards and football fans point out that Tennessee hasn't "been to a BCS bowl since the 1999 season.''

True, but the Vols qualified plenty of times. The reason they didn't get the invite was because UT football fans - as a whole -- pretty much quit traveling to bowl games after the national title game. One year, the Vols were ranked sixth in the nation after the regular season and had to settle for the Peach Bowl because the Florida bowls knew UT fans wouldn't travel like other SEC schools.

Hamilton knows better than anyone that other SEC programs have been viewed as much more attractive come the bowl season than Tennessee.

It will be up to the next Vols' football coach to change that trend - by recruiting dynamic talent and winning - not with pep rallies, and not with politics.

About Griff....He is what he is...A WRITER...His job is to give insights and opinions which we certainly don't always agree with, but that's the point of someone employing him. He stirs the pot. He gives point and counterpoint. He says off the cuff things occasionally that get you to respond and to continue to read. I don't put him in the same league as Strange, but they are in the same sport.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this "he said, she said"...

Here is MY opinion Griff (for what it is worth)...

"Stop responding to personal remarks. It's childish and erodes your credibility. Let the haters hate. Laugh it off and continue with your opinion. Don't try to make people believe your opinion. It's your opinion. If they feel you have done your homework and have gained credibility, they may give you the ultimate gift of approval start sharing in your views.

And IMO don't use the word "hater". Would Bob Kesling say hater? I am an idiot and can get away with it. Be a professional and the 19 years of work may one day pay off!!!"

GO VOLS!!!!!!
In Kiffins we trust...

I've probably read 5 post thumping of UGA articles that referenced those players....... so what? You know why several people have mentioned it? Because it's TRUE. And it's an obvious talking point. To claim some sort of plagiarism is retarded.

Maybe you should try reading and you wouldn't look stupid. The point of my post was to show that Griff was just regurgitating the same points that had already been mentioned ad nauseam. I showed that with my cite to the AJC article. I was making the same argument that you are making in your first sentence.

Thanks guys. Just when I was about to give Griff the benefit of the doubt, you bring up more asshattery.

apparently it's like shooting fish in a barrel with Griffter.... the first two results on google for "phil fulmer salary mike griffith" are that blog and this one...

sounds like he had his mind made up about monte before he got here?
UT: Big bucks, no whammies? | Ask Griff | GoVolsXtra.com

I missed that one...man there is just so much wrong with the logic in that blog. Yes Griff planted his flag in that blog and he's refused to back off of it. No mention of the huge salary Fulmer was making compared to his assistants and the salary structure Kiffin and Hamilton implemented where more money was spread to 'rock star' assistants.

Clue memo to Griff...the cost of living has absolutely nothing to do with the salary of a big time D1 program. See Saban and Tuscaloosa.

I would expect to see a similar article by Griff about the huge salary that Fulmer was drawing for the same cost of living location and particularly given Fulmer's recent performance. Article? Anyone?

You are perfect evidence that Bob Knight's best quote ever was spot on: "Most of us learn to write by the second grade, then we move on to more important things."

Have a nice day.

Sports Monster took down UT's Big Guy | Ask Griff | GoVolsXtra.com
It was pitiful to see Fulmer taken down by his own, and on the brink of disgraceful.....

In past columns I advocated another year for Fulmer, based on his recruiting prowess and track record of bouncing back....

Fact is, the Tennessee fan base has never been completely behind Fulmer, even after he won a national championship.....

Fulmer, a year removed from an SEC title game he was a quarter away from winning against the eventual national champion, was propped up on a stage and forced to take a fall in front of the same fanbase he helped build as a player, assistant and a head coach.

Define "good." I'll use his mentor, Tom Davis, as an example. Is a guy who consistently makes the 'AA and wins 20 games automatically a "good" coach? If so, Pearl is one and Davis was. My main problem is people around Knoxville acting as if Pearl is an elite coach. That's laughable. His peers, even the ones who don't hold his Inspector Clouseau act while at Iowa against him, don't consider him among their best. They see him for what he is: The college equivalent of Don Nelson. A snake oil salesman who dupes fans into thinking he's a great coach by winning a bunch of regular season games running and gunning, while having no chance of ever doing real damage when it matters because his teams are disgracefully undisciplined off the floor and in the halfcourt on both ends between the lines. It's an assessment I share. I will be honest, I'm sure part of my antiphahy toward Pearl is I know who the now deposed imbecile of a university president didn't let Hamilton pursue when Bruce was hired. I'm still furious about that.

What did I miss Hat?? Who was the coach Hamilton wasn't allowed to pursue?

UT: Big bucks, no whammies? | Ask Griff | GoVolsXtra.com

From the blog:
The new defensive staff, led by Money, I mean, Monte, is already between $1.6 million and $2.1 million, and there are still two positions left to be filled.

I thought name calling was a big no-no for real professionals? :nono:

I see nooooo agenda, just even handed objective sports JOURNALISM as you'd expect from someone who not a fan.

Let's examine Fulmer's record of bouncing back...after his first big crash in 2005 he through is offensive staff overboard (they did need to go) and was rescued by old side kick David Cutcliff. That bounce back was a bit wobbly as it contained two blow out losses to key rivals where it appeared that the team quit during the game and an ugly loss in the Outback Bowl against Penn State, followed by an offseason of arrests and suspensions followed by an ugly loss to Cal then an ugly loss at home to UF followed by a beat down at home to Bama where at least a quarter of the stadium was filled with Crimson...he should have been fired on the spot after that disgrace. We did manage to beat our new favorite biacci, UGA, then a good game against Arkansas and were fortunate that Georgia managed to beat Florida and blew big leads against South Carolina and Kentucky. So we limped into the SEC CG with three losses, not much of a running game and a suspect defense. We played well against LSU but our lack of running game finally caught up to us.

Cutcliff leaves for greener pastures and we collapse back to 2005 level of fail, arguably worse.

I'm still searching in this brief history of 2005-2008 for the great bounce backs that were mentioned. I'd describe more as a 'dead cat' bounce. This program was toast going into 2005 we just didn't really know it until 2005. Cutcliff got the patient into remission briefly but the disease was terminal and couldn't survive without him, probably could not have survived with him as well.

Somehow our favorite objective journalist with 300+ years of observing SEC football missed these subtle nuances.

Maybe you had to be a fan to see it?
