improve our DEFENSE between now and next year? We've been as bad defensively the last 10 years as anyone in the SEC, and there have been lots of theories as to why. LINEBACKER PLAY has not been up to par! Last dominating MLB we had was AJ and we all know how that story goes, before him Wilson/Little and before that probably Hacksaw!! I know we've had some really good ones in the past, guys like Reeves-Maybin, Westmoreland but right now we are nowhere close to the elites at the lb position. We'll need big improvement out of Bituli and need JJ to be as good as advertised. I'm curious as to what our depth chart looks like next year at the LB position and look to see a few newcomers competing for time there.

We need some headknockers on defense! Big, mean, fast, strong and intimidating types like Reggie, Barnett, Wilson, Little, Jason Allen, Dale Carter, AJ and Berry!! Go find em coach!

This post is just my opinion, I did not use or source any famous ex VFL either living or dead whilst developing my own personal thoughts.

We have to hope that two major things happen. First, the players on the team are going to have to fully buy in and start playing to their potential. They are going to have to get stronger and faster. Also, they are going to have to remember how to do things they have been doing their entite football lives like tackle. Secondly, Pruitt and the staff are going to have to do their jobs and coach them up properly.

Until we start winning at a high rate and can bring in elite talent, these two factors are the main things needed to fix the defense imo.

Spot on post, everyone talks about our Oline and QB, when CJP puts his type of guys on the field on D, we will be nasty.

Coach can build and run a top knotch D, so we'll have one eventually. Getting this OC hire right could make the year 2020 very nice indeed.

We don't know this though. We only know he succeeds with 5 stars.

So...recruit better. We saw this year he can't win with 4 and 3 star defensive guys.

Very misleading. Our 3 and 4* guys arent like other teams. Why? Simple. They basically havent had any strength and conditioning since 2015. Botch fired Lawson at the end of 2015. We go from a supremely physical team to one of the weakest P5 teams in the country. So basically 2 years worth of strength and conditioning gone.

Now if those guys had been in a consistent S&C program the whole time, I believe our season would have went much differently. Remember Pruitt said the players had to do much more lifting than normal during the season because they were so small and weak.

Yep, my biggest worry for next year is D...not the offense, regardless of who's the OC. Who's gonna fill the voids. I hope for: 1) Year 2 for players make huge leap from second off season in S/C program. or 2) Early enrollee's pan out on front 7. There's a chance for both, but seems to be, once again, an off-season orange colored glasses opinion, based upon zero fact or actual on the field evidence. Shame is, this is a good mid-offseason thread topic, and bowl season hasn't even started.

All that we know is he put a better product on the field in his first year than Butch did last year. He is a smash mouth guy and Butch recruited finesse players. He beat 2 ranked teams while having some players sabotage the team. Some of the best coaches In the country wanted his help. That’s why he had 5 star players to work with.

So, the average human starts to see results from consistent strength training in 4-8 weeks, but we shouldn't expect results from Fitzgerald's NFL/college S&C program in our sophomores, juniors, and seniors after 11 months in the program, which for the first time in their collegiate careers at UT, included in-season strength training?

The team looked weak in the spring, they looked weak at the beginning of the season, and they looked weak at the end of the season.

Yeah bud, our coaches couldn't turn a 2 deep D Line & below average linebacker play into Alabama. Get rid of them all! GTFOH.
Lol where did I say we should have won like Bama last year? And I'm not calling for anyone to be fired.

But if you think the coaching was anything other than piss poor at times this season, particularly against Mizzou and Vandy, I don't know what to tell you.

LBs and DBs need to want to engage the runner and not plant their feet and wait for them to make a move. We give up a lot of extra yds that add up over the game because of poor tackling effort.

Ok strength and conditioning doesnt matter. Fitz obviously sucks. Fire him. So whats your solution then?

Why don't you'll let Coach Pruitt handle this....

Dont you know? Pruitt and his whole staff sucks because they didnt turn this team into winners. They are obviously trash. We should fire them all and start yet another rebuild from scratch.

I didn't say it didn't matter, but blaming the current state of S&C on Butch, is disingenuous considering how long Fitzgerald has had the non-true-freshmen in his program.

Yeah, but the middle of the season...(slide in a little positive for Aub/KY)

No it most certainly is not disingenuous. Is it all Butchs fault? No. But how do you explain us going from an extremely physical team to one of the weakest in 2 short years? Now, answer me this, would a consistent S&C program helped at all in the past 2 years?

So lets say we blame Fitz. Ok if we will take that stance then we have to blame Pruitt right? It would be like Shoop. Shoop had success everywhere but TN. So Fitz is very well respected with a great resume. PSU guys applauded him. So he has had success at almost every other spot but TN. Ok then, Pruitt, a Saban disciple, just doesnt know what a true S&C program should be then? Even though he witnessed what a world class S&C program was for years.

Again, if Fitz just isnt doing a good job, then whats the solution?
