not impressed with Shoop

While only 2 games into the 2016 season, one thing becomes readily apparent for team 120, tackling has been very poor and must improve dramatically if the Vols plan on winning the east

Best coach we have had in ages. His adjustments are absolutely elite.

I can see why Butch targeted him, and the school paid up.

Can't agree more Goat. Most of the yards on our defense is first quarter and he is adjusting on the fly and not even waiting til halftime.

The defense, like the offense, isn't going to show their cards until September 24. Judging before then is going to be guessing.

Perhaps Shoop should scheme up a way to teach the Vols how to tackle with his beautiful mind:p

As in, when you see the ball carrier, don't just wave at him, give him a big o'l slap in the gut and take his ball away:clapping:

Any football defensive minds care to explain what Shoop has brought to the table?

Because from the regular fan's (layperson) perspective it looks like a slight regression from the defense last year. From the preseason talk/hype I was expecting some "orange swarm" defense..

Who gives a crap? They've also straight up shut teams down after a bit. We have a damn good D coordinator. The way our defense adjusted and dominated the game after the first quarter was impressive. Btw. VT is a better team that UGA.

I think that may well be the case offensively. VT will have a great chance to show this when they go down to UNC in a few weeks. 24 might be the most any team puts up on Shoop this year.

Appy State is very solid also. People forget they ran for over 200 yards against Clemson last year and have almost everyone back from that team. They have a great chance of being a 1 or 2 loss team. If they beat Miami, they are going to be top 15 ranked by year's end and really, really sick that they did not find a way to win in Neyland.

I think our defense is right on track.

The entire conversation at this point last year was that our defense was gashed horribly in the pass game by Bowling Green and could not get off the field to secure the win against Oklahoma and we aren't going to make a bowl giving up 31 points a game . . .

Everybody has selective amnesia about that now?

He is a good coach and I am glad he is our DC, however our starts have been bad. We have given up Hugh chunks of yardage. That seems to suggest his original game plan is suspect but his adjustments are first rate. Would very much like to marry the two.

I can definitely get on board w/ this assessment.

It also appears the D over pursues to the point where a cut back / change in direction gains huge yards.

Good thing is he does make adjustments and when the D gets settled they are play very, very well.

Love it, we're 2-0 and already the VN experts, which includes OP and his likers, are in pursuit of firing a coach.

Thankfully this only represents an extremely minor percentage of our fan base.

You were expecting the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens? If you can not see the adjustments being made, you are either blind or you just don't understand football. He adjusted the defensive schemes to take away what both Appy State and VT were doing early on to gain those chunks of yards.

I like the in game adjustment he has been making that we have lacked since (Wilcox?) but in two games the teams came out and scored in the 1st quarter then were shutout the rest the game we haven't done that in a long time and that is coaching.

In the first two games this year UT's defense has guven up 184 and 186 rushing yards. Thats not against Georgia and Alabama. Thats against Appalachian State and Virginia Tech.

97th in run defense in the country right now, 10th in SEC....after playing, as you said, versus a couple of average to below average teams. Nobody was more excited when Shoop was hired than me. This was not exactly what I was expecting from our defense under Bob at this point. We'll see if he can get things turned around and quick.

He produced a defense that gave 120 the opportunity to score 31 points unanswered against VT just last week. VT may not be NC caliber opposition BUT they have a very effective offensive scheme that will give plenty of people fits in the ACC this year is my opinion. Shoop adjusted and shut their gobbler butts down when we needed him to and THAT alone was worth at least a million $s by itself on the most watched college game of the week and largest ever crowd to attend a college game IMO.

As the season progresses, your evaluation of the Vols's first two opponents will prove incorrect.

Based on how App State does vs a Sunbelt schedule? Lol. 80% of their roster I s comprised of 2star rated players or less. That's a very good to great Sunbelt team, and a very average to below average team if they're in a Power 5 conference.

Compare em to Bama, UGA, Florida and TAM.....you honestly think they're not an average to below average team vs those guys?

Let's see how VT does with their first year staff and JUCO transfer QB going forward. Doubt anybody is projecting them to win the ACC and play for a title. No, more likely, most see them for what they are....a middle of the road ACC team in rebuild mode.

I expect UGA to get yards early, because of a new OC. I expect Bama to get yards early too, because of a DT QB that has not been the norm for them. Shoop is definitely a beautiful mind. However FL will get shut down early, it will be up to the offense to score points and move the ball.

Penn State was only two spots ahead of us and rushing defense last year.
I know pass defense is an area where his statistics shot way up and I'll have to look it up but another category as well.
I wasn't expecting teams not to be able to run on us, after I saw the numbers. I do expect them to score less, and I definitely do not expect to see 5/5 on 4th down conversions.

Hell I felt our Defense last year was the only thing that kept Tennessee in some of the close games.
