Not honoring Pruitt's contract

I'm always so hungry to consume anything involving Tennessee football, that I've enjoyed Doug's show for years, even though it wasn't that great. I just wanted as much Tennessee as I can get.

I've reached a point where I no longer care what he has to say, and I do not respect his opinion on pretty much anything. He's revealed himself as a sheep in the way that a lot of media people have revealed themselves over the last few years. Now that I know what you are, I don't care what you have to say anymore.

This is exactly the way I feel about him and Hyams both. I quit listening after The Kentucky meltdown. And I loved the Coach to Coach show he and Fulmer did. This entire fiasco that was Fulmer’s AD tenure opened my eyes. I wholeheartedly supported him being hired as AD. I’ll be very interested to see how he acts over the next few years.

Doug Mathews is concerned that UT may not honor Pruitt's contract. He believes coaches may say "no thanks" when UT comes calling. They won't be able to trust UT.

Looking at this search, I think they are already there. And Tennessee will continue to be there for at least the next ten years. How far beyond that last is how quickly the administration changes to reflect one that knows how to support it's staff, and not a pack of backstabbing pricks. Winning an SEC championship a couple of times will be what erases that perception.

Bad management on several levels led up to Pruitt’s firing, and yes, drumming up a top legal team and firing him for cause without working out a settlement will absolutely make coaches less likely to come here. He skirted the rules poorly, and he apparently related poorly to his team, but in the end, he was attempting to do exactly what he was hired to do. I happen to think he was doing a horrible job.

Not paying Pruitt’s buyout and not reaching a settlement cost (and will continue to cost) the AD in so many ways. You don’t shake that reputation.

10 years? Are you a paid troll too?

FL fired Their last coach for cause. They had no trouble hiring Mullen.

I like Mathews but he is kinda out of touch.

Doug got what he wanted. His last shot at relevance. His connection is gone now. Bye Bye Doug. Used to enjoy Big Orange Sunday & WLAC'S Sports-Scene. (Bob Bell RIP) Days gone by.

Yep. It likely already has this go around.

We’ll pay him something to keep him from talking. Likely less than the buyout, but once lawyers get their cut, and reputation factored in, a wash.

This is what happens when someone “tells” in a “don’t ask, don’t tell” culture of cheating. I suppose we might as well see if we can get out of a buyout, but making Pruitt the fall guy has externalities

So we should just not report it and then get the death penalty later? nah bro we did the smart thing here

Coaches aren’t going to be passing up opportunities because one guy feels he was done wrong. They’d have to discount all of the others who could have retired off what UT paid them to leave. And I’d ask Doug if he sees that for Arkansas based off their legal mess with Bieliema.
If you feel like you can't do what the best 10 teams in the conference do w/o getting fired for cause, you might be hesitant to come here. Expectations are high at Tennessee, but now we are the school that rats itself out.

That’s every school that self reports. Don’t want anybody who’s so sloppy they think they’ll get caught.

Self-reporting minor stuff is one thing. Digging for the major violations that are supposed to be hidden is another. Alabama recruits get their pictures taken with new cars on the first Wednesday of every February. Same thing happens at LSU, Auburn, and Georgia. There was nothing unique going on at Tennessee.

The thing that is unique is that someone inside the football program blew the whistle.

How much did they “dig”? Someone ratted on them and plopped the whole shmabob on the Chancellor’s desk! She did her job because it’s the coverup that kills you in the long run.

I get it. I'm just saying it kills us in trying to hire a coach. We want to compete with UGA and Florida but will not pay your buyout if you try to beat them at their own game. What good coach would want that?
