It's weird how 2 individual plays can basically determine Heisman. Tennessee played 7 teams that finished ranked that year, 4 in the top 10, 3 in the top 5. Manning played fantastic for 99.5% of the regular season. Michigan played 3 ranked teams, the highest ranked team was Wash St at #9, I believe.

Note: I don't remember feeling any animosity towards Fowler particularly. Just the media in general.

and your evidence that fowler hated tenn before woodson won is that he didn't appreciate a bunch of idiot rednecks sending him hate mail and threatening his life after woodson won?

What I don't get is if Woodson was really that spectacular of a 2-way player, why did Champ Bailey not win the Heisman? I believe champ finished 5th in Heisman voting and dude had like 3 times as many offensive yards and TD's as Woodson.

He might not have won it in a landslide but saying ESPN and Fowler didn't overly promote Woodson means your head is/was up your a$$.

you have the winningest program in football history with one of the greatest players in football history beating another great program the last week of the season. any network would promote woodson.

I do kind of understand why Vols fans hate the Heisman. Vols players have come in second to:
a) the only defensive player to win
b) the only player on a losing team to win
c) someone who ended up playing pro basketball
d) a guy from Princeton

UGA finished #10 in 1997. 1 of the 5 top 11 (finishing) teams Peyton faced that year. Brutal schedule.

LSU finished #13, but I don't think Tennessee played them that year.

Come on now....you can't compare Bailey's UGA teams with Woodson's Michigan squad in '97.

Champ Bailey's UGA teams were never in contention to win the SEC East, let alone the national championship.

UT was arguably better than every team on its 1997 schedule, and that includes UF.
