Not convinced our offense will look inept vs Florida

I think they have basically stayed vanilla so far and heres why. There is alot of plays we ran last year that hasn't showed up yet in games this year. We haven't seen the receiver motion across and take the hand off or no WR reverse. No wheel routes. Anybody else come up with some?

We haven't seen the TE over the middle until this past week. That play seems to be a good one against the blitz.

Agree with the OP.

This team so far has been sloppy. They've made critical mistakes at bad times that have allowed lesser opponents to stay in the game. In my estimation, there were maybe 5 plays/mistakes by UT that kept UT from blowing Ohio out early..... Dobbs missing a wide open Malone, Willams not catching a perfect hitch pass, the face mask on the punt, Barnett lining up off sides, and Dobbs taking the sack after missing Malone.

There were other mistakes that contributed to some of that. For instance, either by design or mistake the guy who sacked Dobbs after he missed Malone was unblocked.

All UT has to do is clean up the unforced errors and the O will be VERY tough to deal with.

Can't actually debate points so resort to Busch league humor. Doubt you even know what you are actually seeing on Saturdays.

Allow me to retort....

1. The lack of imagination and creativity within the offensive coaching staff is alarming. There are far too many slow developing plays to truly be successful.

2. The coaching staff does nothing to help the offensive line. If they are truly that bad, UT should move the pocket with rollouts and boots. Do something to help your line and qb.

3. Stop attempting long field goals when everyone in the building knows he can't make it. All that does is deflate everyone. Punt deep and let the defense make a play.

4. Allow AK to play more often and in different packages. Most of the time when he comes in, everyone knows he's going to get the ball.

5. Set Dobbs up for success by rolling the pocket or actually using the middle of the field and that big ole SEC tight end.

6. Learn that this "hurry up" is not working and actually run clock with a lead. No reason to shut the playbook down, but it's silly to hurry up and snap it in the 4th quarter with a lead.

That is a all for now. I look forward to many more educational debates with you. Thank you.

Wylo, pretty much agree with everything here. #5 I think is big, and I addressed that in a follow-up post above. #3 is so frustrating, because there is no doubt about Medley's leg. He can kick the crap out of it. For some reason though, when it gets to be over 40 yards, it gets mental with him.

I think you'll see us do things this week that will greatly improve 1, 2, 4, and 5. Here's hoping anyway!

And FTR, I took no offense to your first reply. It was funny.

Our OL has been complete garbage against second class football teams. Florida will be BY FAR the best defense we have faced.

I'm sure Florida isn't going to run up the score against us unless it's done via the turnover (interceptions returned for touchdowns off of dumb throws from Dobbs).

I see no way that we will have an effective and sustained running attack on ANY SEC team without first having a solid OL and a passing game that can be respected. Dobbs is horribly inaccurate and when he is accurate the wide receivers drop the ball.

If we are going to rely on Dobbs scrambling then this will be an ugly low scoring game a la 10 to 12.

And if this game is within one score at the end of the game, Dobbs or CBJ will absolute screw it up and we will lose #12 to Florida.

Finally! Someone gets it. It's okay to not have sticks in butts. He took the comment as he should have. Thank you for not needing a safe space.

I hope you're right. I hope Tennessee does whatever it takes to win.

#100 offense against 3 lackluster teams and DeBord play-calling against the #1 total defense and scoring defense? And Vols fielding a MASH unit on defense?

Piece of cake. Yeah, we got this.

I think your right a lot of the things we did last year to help the O-line, and keep the D-line off balance(Sweeps, counters, option plays, screens, etc) we haven't done much this year. Hopefully it will be enough to get it done. I think we need to score at least 20 points to win and 35 to win for sure.

There is a lot of doom and gloom on this forum. Some of it is rightfully out of concern for the injuries we've sustained on defense. Some of it is also rightfully out of despair at how our OL has looked so far. I understand both of those concerns, but I guess I'm an optimist, so here goes...

Last year we ran all over Florida with both Dobbs and Hurd. We were able to do that with virtually no passing game. Jauan Jennings nearly out-passed Dobbs for the game with his 1 throw on the trick play. Our WRs this year I believe are a definite upgrade over what we had last year in the Florida game (of our actual WRs, Josh Smith led the group with a whopping 6 receiving yards). If Malone can continue to show he can move the sticks, it will keep Florida off-balance just enough.

wtm, have you even watched the 1st 3 games?

I sure did - well, actually I had to listen to the Ohio game on the radio, but I am up to speed on how we've looked so far. For whatever reason, especially in the App St and Ohio games, it's like we just mailed in the gameplan and just said, ok we'll just out-talent these guys and move on to the next week. I believe our scheme doesn't work if you remove even 1 cylinder from the engine. Some teams with big, powerful OLs can just overwhelm weaker opponents by just running up the middle. Our offense depends on misdirection and timing to be effective. I don't agree with Butch's decision to play it like that because it's not like teams don't have film of last year to go by, but we clearly weren't showing much against Ohio and App State.

wtm, if Chance Hall can't go, Florida's DL will destroy Dobbs and Hurd.

I really hope Chance can go this Saturday, but you know who didn't start last year against Florida? Chance Hall. Our OL from left to right was Kerbyson, Robertson, Thomas, Wiesman, and Kendrick. I think the OL will magically start looking better once we fire up all the cylinders in the gameplan. Are they great? No. But they're not as bad as they've looked so far this year.
I'm just going to go ahead and agree with you. We are going to see a different team this Saturday.

Florida's D is very good and it will be tough to move the ball...but it's a four quarter game and for us to win I think we have to be able to keep their D on the field...3 and outs are a killer...play very physical up front; just make first downs; protect the punter and cover the kicks...force the Florida O into bad situations and get some turnovers...

The ghost of General Neyland will be there saturday...don't get discouraged if we can't move the ball well...we can't lose if they never score...defense and special teams will be our stregth...

I hope so but our line has to give Josh the time in the pocket. There were times he was flushed out with a three man rush.

I think we'll see a lot more zone-read this Saturday and the play-action off of it than the first three games combined. I wouldn't be surprised to see some type of I-formation and some spread with an H-back this week as well.

You need to be creative on offense. We are not--that's a problem. Most good offenses have a reliable short/possession passing game that gets you 5/7/10 yards--we need that--and we need to take some chances down the field--go for some big plays and keep their DBs honest. They will be looking for Hurd and Dobbs to run, that's for sure. First down is key: Difference between making 5 yards on 1st down and 1 or 2 is huge.

Florida's goal will be plain and simple. Make Dobbs throw the ball. They will have 8-9 in the box every play basically.

I'm just going to go ahead and agree with you. We are going to see a different team this Saturday.

Same players, same coaches, same scheme. Three poor offensive performances against inferior teams.

I'm curious as to what makes you think that we will see a completely different team this week?
