Exactly what I was about to post . . . and Singletary while better compensated played most of his career prior to free agency when the money really started flowing.

I bet Ditka made considerably more money in his first year as the Saints coach than he did in his entire playing career.

I don't think those guys got into coaching for the money. Mike Singletary doesnt need the money as an assistant coach in the NFL. Most these guys can make more money in business then in coaching. Some people want to be a coach.

Yeah, I'm sure IBM and Cantor Fitzgerald were beating down the doors to hire Shell and Ditka when they retired. Singletary is an assistant coach because that is the route to being a head coach.

I'm sure there are guys who do love to coach and just want to be around the game, but I think when you look at the money being paid to the stars of today, it makes it that much less likely that they will go into coaching once their careers are over. It's a different world today than it was pre-1992.

Why would a player with the stature of Peyton Manning (especially if he wins the superbowl) ever return to the town where he is a hero only to become a goat if he is a failure?

It makes sense for a lessor known who had a nondescript career as a player to become a coach. When thinking of image, there is too much to lose for a player like Payton to come back to K'ville. Hat may tell you differently, but Payton is way too smart to do something like that.

Look what happened to Johnny Majors, we needed a new coach, no doubt about that, but it was tough the way he was ousted. He couldnt get us to the next level, but he did lay the foundation.

I've heard Peyton say on two different occasions that coaching is something he would like to do. I don't know if he ever ends up coaching at UT or not but it is not as far fetched as alot of you make it out to be.

Can you imagine the pressure on the QB playing for Manning, and I'm just thinking about prep time not actual on-field performance.

A lot of these have been very successful in real estate and with restaurants etc. It takes a while to work your way up to a head coaching position making millions.

i'm not LG, but i only remember Spurrier turning down the job before it was offered to meyer. When Zook was hired, it was a different story. most notably stoops and mike shanahan turned the job back then.
