Yeah, I'm sure IBM and Cantor Fitzgerald were beating down the doors to hire Shell and Ditka when they retired. Singletary is an assistant coach because that is the route to being a head coach.I don't think those guys got into coaching for the money. Mike Singletary doesnt need the money as an assistant coach in the NFL. Most these guys can make more money in business then in coaching. Some people want to be a coach.

Why would a player with the stature of Peyton Manning (especially if he wins the superbowl) ever return to the town where he is a hero only to become a goat if he is a failure?
It makes sense for a lessor known who had a nondescript career as a player to become a coach. When thinking of image, there is too much to lose for a player like Payton to come back to K'ville. Hat may tell you differently, but Payton is way too smart to do something like that.
