...yet we're captivating (albeit for the wrong reasons) the interest of the nation?

If we were not a premiere school no one would GAF.

But here we are.

As another sportswriter put it, we are in the same category as Nebraska - best days are behind us. With the right hire we can be prominent again but it looks like an uphill climb right now. Is what it is

We are not on the level of Nebraska. We have a growing recruiting base. We just need to clean house in the athletic department. It shouldn't take long to get back to relevance. But, don't settle for a 3rd tier candidate by panicking.

Big difference is we actually have a recruiting base unlike Nebraska. Incompetence is the reason we are in the spot we are. Not because we had some success that was unsustainable, like Nebraska

The biggest liability this program has is the people running it.

Recruiting is not particularly hard, but more difficult than at places like Georgia or LSU. I wouldn't call it a liability though; you just have to work harder at it than at some other places.

In all other respects (tradition, history, fan support, money, facilities, brand) it absolutely is a premier program. That's why it is so sad seeing it run into the ground.

Top 3 facilities (going to #1)
#2 most profitable
#1 highest recruiting budget
#1 most demanding fan base

A top-5 job for a top HC.
No place for amateurs, posers, used-car salesmen.

Critical hire and our AD fumbles, again...

That's because the AD hire was critical and the administration blew that hire, so no surprise that bad hire has snowballed into this train wreck.

It's the butterfly effect. A butterfly flaps its wings in China and the UT football program goes down in flames.

Only in higher education in the state of Tennessee can you create a public debacle like this and stay employed.

DiPietro, Davenport, and Currie continue to make UT the laughing stock of the nation. All three should be relieved of the positions with the University.

Actually recruiting is not much more difficult than Georgia or LSU. Middle and West Tennessee produce a lot of talent. Georgia can only sign 25 from their state.

But the main problem is that UT is such a hot mess for the last 15 years that other schools are ahead of us in the food chain. Alabama owns most of Middle Tennessee and Clemson is beginning to own East Tennessee for the lack of a reputable program in Knoxville.

Another issue that I perceive is that kids are not dedicated to the state program here as they are to schools like Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, and LSU. You would not have a Cade Mays type of kid de-commit from those programs.

People say that we are on the brink of an important hire for this program. The important hire was in 2010 and we missed the boat. We had a chance to correct that in 2013 and failed again. I have no confidence in this program regardless of who is making the decisions.

Even the shape of the state of TN has an effect. Like you said, West TN and Memphis is closer to 5-6 other SEC schools besides Tennessee. It’s why in some Memphis-area high schools you’ll have more graduates go to Ole Miss than UT
