Not a good start for Meach

The guy will shine when he gets his chance. Meachem has a lot of potential, just let time tell. I hope he gets over his injury soon.

The out of shape thing was attributed to the pre draft traveling he did. I remember reading something about it. He broke his workouts to do the travel thing to meet with teams.

But this is the first I heard of an ankle problem.

The Yats are already starting to compare him to Donte Stallworth in terms of fragility.

Let's hope Meach's work ethic help him rehab quickly and avoid further injury.

Actually, I saw an interview with Brees after Meachem sat out, and Brees had nothing but good things to say about Meachem. Basically said he has a ton of talent, catches and runs well, and is going to be a great receiver for N.O. I don't think Brees would be just saying it about a rookie. He didn't seem concerned.

I guess Im lost. How bad a shape could he really have gotten in from the time of the combine, where he was in clearly great condition, to the time he was first in camp? He'd have had to be eating buffets every day and washing it down with whiskey, I would think.Much ado about nothing I think. Its a slow time of the year and the media is just looking for stuff. Meach can't be more than 5-10 lbs over, MAX.

From what I've heard, he was claiming that all of the "wining and dining" with teams coupled with the fact that all the travel cut into his workout time led to him putting on some weight and getting out of shape... but he's a world-class athlete and shouldn't have much trouble getting back into shape once his ankle heals.

I'm not going to say you don't need to worry about him. Not to buzzkill, but let's remember Meachem only had one good year out of three at Tennessee.

I would worry, If I were the Saints.

I just read that it is more than his ankle bothering him...turns out he had a possible problem with his medial meniscus in his right knee, and the saints knew about it before the draft. It is the same knee that had surgery to repair the meniscus in 2003. Hopefully it isn't serious and won't require season ending surgery

Yeah, pro football talk claims hes going under the knife for surgery

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that receiver Robert Meachem, the Saints' first-round selection in the 2007 draft, will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday, and will thereafter be out of action for four weeks.

It's a cartilage problem in Meachem's right knee; he had similar issues at Tennessee, but nothing that caused him to miss extensive action. Still, it's not a good sign for the former Volunteer, since each human knee has a finite amount of cartilage, and it doesn't grow back. Once it's gone, the player will be dealing with bone-on-bone contact. The choices? Play in excruciating pain, retire, or undergo microfracture surgery, a relatively new procedure that has had mixed results.

It's not a good sign for a team that used a first-round pick on a position at which, in 2006, they got the steal of the draft when nabbing Marques Colston in round seven.

the Saints knew about the knee when they drafted him, so they must feel pretty confident about the healing process
