Norvell simply hasn't done enough.....

good stuff. not sold on him, but it's at least good to hear some good things.

btw, always good, as a former desoto county resident, to see a fellow desoto county resident hanging out here...

I don’t post much, but I read here constantly. I’m a lifelong Big Orange fan from Jackson, TN, but have been in Memphis area since I graduated from college in late 80’s. We moved to Desoto County ten years ago because of Memphis crime. It’s been great.

That logic may seem correct, but it’s not exactly true. Fuente wasn’t a recruiter, whereas Mike is an awesome recruiter and has really upped the talent at Memphis. If he can recruit to Memphis, I can’t imagine what he could do at Tennessee. As you said, Mike truly is an offensive innovator. In fact, Fuente and staff traveled to Arizona State to study Norvell’s offense. Fuente had a first round draft pick QB, Mike hasn’t had that. Sure, Riley Ferguson can throw, but some think the guy following him will be better because he is mobile and better suited for Mike’s offense. Mike is far and away better than Fuente with fans, media, in the community, etc. Justin Fuente is one heck of a coach, but he is rather prickly. Personality and temperment wise, Norvell is a better fit for a fish bowl program like Tennessee.

Norvell is young and I’d prefer Currie hire a more experienced man, but he’s is an intelligent winner who could handle the job. I am certain he would be light years better than Butch. If he’s the guy (I don’t think he will be), Tennessee will be in good hands.

Thanks for the post, Olive Branch. I appreciate the perspective.

I like Norvell, don't get me wrong ... just feel like he's a bigger risk than we want to take given that we really only have 2 years of data at a program that was built up by his predecessor. Definitely upside with Norvell, though; I'd still be optimistic about him if we hired him. And at a minimum, I agree, he's better than Butch Jones.

Not hiring Norvell, we're hiring Gruden

/thread

No way I want Gruden at UT...really never saw it happening anyway...still don't even get the infatuation with him except he married a UT cheerleader...:)

GO VOLS!

Please don't hire Norvell. Too much of a gamble. But the likely reason UT may hire him is they would get him for a sack of nickles. Memphis pays him under 2 mil a year. Double that and he'd be the lowest paid SEC coach out there....

To me....it's too much a gamble....too much a risk...he simply hasn't done enough to warrant the job at UT.

NO WAY
Ok, i won't hire Norvell.

agree. but really, aside from Mullen and Kelly, really who has a great college hc resume that that we're looking at, realistically speaking? Gruden has no college resume. Frost is in year 2. Brohm is in year 1 at P5 level. Cambell is in year 2 at P5. anyway, you get the idea...

the resumes are shorter and shorter these days...the turnover at the head coaching position across the country is at an all time high. coaches are not staying at places longer than 3-5 years, so hardly anyone really has a resume.

and with up to 7 SEC schools alone potentially having openings, i doubt seriously few, if any, get a bonafide, sure fire head coach that's well established at the P5 level.

For sure, but compared to other Non-sure-fire hires, his teams don't stack up IMO

And Jon Gruden isnt a risk?? are you kidding me? 90% of this fan base's dream coach is a coach that hasnt coached football in 10 years. Giving said coach a 10million dollar salary in hopes he will go out and hire the best staff available. Lets be honest Gruden was a mediocre NFL coach AT BEST.

You’re insane if you think Gruden wouldn’t absolutely kill it in College football.

No offense to Norvell, but if we drop below the level of Frost/Mullen (meaning shot down by Gruden, Kelly, Patterson, Peterson, Shaw, Franklin), I'd vote we break the emergency glass and hire Kiffin before we take Norvell.

How do you hire Norvell when Scott Frost beat the crap out of him this year. How would this look, Florida hires Frost and UT hires Norvell. How would that game go every year.

Yeah, hiring Gruden would suck! We don’t need a Super Bowl winning coach. Let’s keep hiring guys like Dooley and people to win us Champions in Life. (Blue font)

and that's really the deal...the idea that we still can't get a guy we target. Norvell may be great...may be. and most of my comments really have nothing to do with Norvell himself, i honestly don't know enough about him, other than what OBvol posted earlier....so any opinion i have on him would be uneducated...

but, the point is really, if you get to a guy like him, you've moved down the list a bit...........and that tells everyone how serious UT really was in going to get their guy.

they can't afford that, and they won't be able to sell "norvell was our guy".
