Northwestern and what they are saying about the Vols

What NU must understand after 1/1/2016. We may be ignorant, but we sure know how to play football.

Insinuating that you need to have attended a school (or any school) in order to be a fan of their athletics programs is ignorant, elitist BS and is nothing more than an attempt at talking down to people you see as inferior.

Hope we stomp a mud hole in 'em.
Totally agree with that statement.

Been trying to find Northwestern message boards but it looks like they aren't into it like we are.

I grew up in Tennessee and went to Northwestern. Doesn't surprise me - most of the students are probably studying.

The lack of passion was bad- Tennessee is much better.

You could always tell who Northwestern was playing by the color of the stands since the opponents would outnumber the NU fans.

Gary Barnett did say Payton should have won the Heisman in 1997, I asked him when he talked at my fraternity.

Tennessee will beat them badly like the other good teams they played.

I don't understand why people think so negatively about fans never attending the college they're fans of. It's a childish jest that takes no consideration of real life events such as said college not having the major or just being too expensive. It irks me when people use it.

they say that because they know the only way that anyone would root for northwestern is if they went to school there

The most idiotic thing was that they said special teams could decide it in their favor...

Do they not know who we are? Tennessee will special teams them into the ground.

Unless it comes down to making/missing a field goal, I do not know how good a kicker they have.

I'm always a cautious person but I think UT wins easily. I've seen them some, but if you look at their resumes they're barely beating avg teams and while they beat Stanford, Michigan and Iowa blew them out 78-10 combined. They should indeed fear the running game. Could be wrong but I'm just not seeing it.

I like them and pull for them so I mean no disrespect but Im calling it early.

They're slow, their defense isn't as good as the ranking, and they can't stop a run.

We'll beat the living piss out of them, and it will be beautiful.

Its really hard to get a feel on NW. Ive watched them play twice this season. They looked like a real good team against Stanford, but looked awful against Iowa. I think NW is a decsent team, but I think they will run into the same problem Iowa did when they played the Vols. SPEED! If our Vols come out with the same attitude they had in their bowl game last season, I think we win handily, but if we go into this game not taking NW serious, it could turn into a long day for our Vols. TN 35 NW 24

What Michigan dd to them, we'll do more and worse. Hurd, Kamara and Dobbs will have a field day with them. Our rested D-Line will live in their backfield.

Those guys are going to be surprised. Our offensive stats are based on some of best defenses in the country.

All I'm going to say is regardless of whether you agree or disagree with their thoughts on our team and match up there is no reason to be as disrespectful as some "vol fans" on their board. The mouthy few in this fan base are a virus to the rest of us and unfortunately their ignorance spreads into the image as a whole. If some of you are on there I ask that you grow up and quit acting like a fool.
After all its their board for their fans. I'd question their Fandom if they didn't support their team. So you know........just do us all a favor and stop.

Thank you.

When I was a kid growing up, most of our parents didn't go to any college at all. They were just plain old, hard-working blue collar Tennessee fans. Sure, some kids' parents did have degrees, they generally worked out at the Air Force base. But they were uncommon. Most parents were like my folks. True Tennessee fans, not because of any diploma, but because that's who they were. And they passed that along to our generation.

If you were a Tennessean, the Volunteers were your team. That's how it was from early childhood for us.

Has nothing to do with where you ended up going to school, it was in your blood long before you picked a college. You were already bleeding orange.

I'll actually take that perspective as more genuine and true than any elitism this guy can generate.

Amen, brother.

The guy might have a NW degree, and think he is the smartest person in the world, but he lack something far more significant, and that is class. When he resorts to name calling, all it really shows is his inferiority complex.

No need to waste any further brain energy there.

I totally agree. We've been to the mountaintop before...let's act like it. No need to act like a classless fool on their boards, at the game...anywhere. Represent your team, the school and the state well.

Pretty ignorant of the writer to berate people for being fans if they didn't attend UT. When did it become a crime for Tennessean's to be proud of the state school. Many friends and family have went there, I didn't but I love football and I love going to Knoxville to pull for the Vols. I'm 51 and have been attending games since 1983, I usually attend at least 1 game every year and sometimes 2 or even 3 games in some years. I have attended the 1990 Cotton Bowl and the 1991 Sugar Bowl. I was at Legion Field in 96 to watch us end the streak, I was on the 50 and bama fans scattered like flies around us in the 4th quarter. I have endured 0-6 in 1988 and relished the turnaround in 89 11-1. I am Tennessee through and through, but I am not any different than many folks across this great state that simply love UT Football. It's the crowds, it's the tailgates, it's wonderful fall colors of the smoky mountains. It's the Vol Navy and the Tennessee River. I could go on for days about what it's about. To sum it up it's our Tennessee pride!!!!! So again to the writer that trashed my Tennessee fans of all races and backgrounds from one end of the state to another, What's so wrong with that?????? GO BIG ORANGE!!!!! Tennessee fans aren't required to have a UT diploma hanging on their wall to pull for the BIG ORANGE!!!!!

I looked into NW's special teams stats a bit and I can see why they're confident. I think it's much more likely that we return a Kickoff for a TD against them than a Punt. But honestly, this could be a pretty low scoring game, so I doubt we'll get too many shots at that. They're 57th nationally in opponent KO returns. Not terrible, but not great. I'll be interested to see if they even kick to Berry or just take their chances giving us good field position. With their defense being as good as it is, I'd assume we see the latter.

As far as punts go, they're 115th in punting and 4th in opponent punt returns. What that tells me is that their punting game is likely similar to USU's when we faced them last year: they want to punt it high, not overly far, and not give the other team much of a shot at a return. You see teams that have to rely on a talent deficit do this on special teams a lot, and it isn't a bad strategy. Not every team can play 4 star defensive backups on their coverage teams. Basically, either Cam or Kamara isn't very likely to get much of a chance for a return if NW executes their game plan. The upside of this is that it likely helps to swing the field position game.

As for kick returns, they're 12th in the country. We're 15th in opponent kickoff returns. That should be an interesting matchup. I'll be interested to see if the coaches are content to let Medley go for touchbacks all game or if we try to kick it high and short and pin them deep like we've had some success doing at times this year.

No matter what happens, I don't really see special teams being a big factor that swings things their way. I'd imagine they just try to avoid Cam and Berry and cede some field position to us. Overall, that probably hurts them a little bit as our offense has generally shown the ability to move the ball pretty well, even if we don't finish drives. I honestly expect us to win the field position game because of these factors. And if we can make NW have to drive a long field all day, I really like our chance to win.

I think we easily win this game by 14 points. Our offense is too fast paced for any big 10 team. I think dobbs will give them fits as well. Hurd will pound them until they're crying. And butch will slap them until they forfeit.

#2 and #4 really hit the nail on the head. I love it though. Complete loser talk.

"Yeah you just beat us by 40 but who's got the better APR."

And the whole idea that you can't be a fan of a football team because you didn't attend the school. Sorry Northwester only draws Alumni fans bc they're sorry at football year in and year out.
