1975, North Texas (State) beat the Vols in Knoxville. Vols had been ranked as high as 10 in 1975 but had fallen back after losing to AL. NTS came in and shocked the Vols. Won't happen this weekend but MO and even VU are still worrisome.

That is wild, what was NTS record that year, were they that good or were the Vols hungover or just still drunk.

Go Vols!

Go Vols!

We finished 7-5 against a very easy schedule. We also lost that year to a 6-5 Ole Miss and a 7-4 Vandy. Still we had no business losing to North Texas. We made their year and their fans probably still talk about that game.

It's hard to believe that Bill Battle wasn't fired after 1975. I remember an interview with Battle where he described the game unfolding a lot like Memphis '96. We could move the ball with ease between the 20's but kept coming away without points in the red zone (turnovers, missed fg's, stopped on downs). He said that he even got a sympathy call from Bear Bryant the next day. LOL!

They had a really good year, but it was still a monumental upset. It would be like losing to Bowling Green this year.

North Texas couldn't beat Memphis that year because they couldn't stop Memphis's QB, Kippy Brown.

No. Have you seen Bowling Green play besides vs the Vols? They're 8-2 and only other loss is to Memphis by 3. Their qb has 37 td passes and 4 int all year and thrown for like 4,000 yards. This is probably a top 25 team

I bet it won't happen in 2015, i hope.:thud:

Bill Battle's drop off was epic. With Doug Dickey's recruits, he was consistently a 10 game winner. See his first three seasons. He managed 8 wins in his 4th season, thanks primarily to Condredge Holloway, Haskell Stanback and barefoot kicker Ricky Townsend. Battle's contacts were the same as the Bear's and he couldn't beat out Bryant for the top recruits.

I was a kid, but I remember that the fans reacted to that 7-5 record the way we reacted to Dooley's records. The next year he was 5-5 after losing to Kentucky, 7-0, yes Kentucky. By then, the moving van had been sent. Beating Vandy 13-10 was simply a nice parting gift.

That NT game happened a week before my first Vols game (against Colorado St.). There were people so down about that loss that they didn't want to go with our group. Too bad for them, the Vols beat the Rams 28-7.

If Butch Jones and the Vols lose to North Texas, will Jones survive the aftermath?

If that happens the entire staff should be fired on the sidelines at the end of the game in front of the players and however many fans are still in the stadium at that point. Because getting fired in the parking lot like Kiffin would be equivalent of giving CBJ and staff a bonus if they actually manage to lose this game.

By the way, I'm not trying to be overly dramatic and make North Texas worse than it is - see this article.

State of Texas is home to some of the worst college football teams

And NT was a DII school in 1975 as well...like UTC, WCU, VMI, etc...
I remember it well. It was very upsetting to a 17 year old rabid Vol fan!! If we lose Saturday, it would be very upsetting to a 57 year old rabid Vol fan!!

It was my freshman year and I was at the game. They ran a kickoff back for a TD. We had first and goal inside the 10 once and no kidding, we ended up at 4th and goal from the 41 after a series of miscues. I think we punted but I don't remember for sure. As was typical in every game that year, even though we had Mickey Marvin on the line, we couldn't pass block anyone all year. Randy Wallace was the QB and he often got swarmed after just a few steps back. Often he just chucked it toward Larry Seivers and he would just out jump everyone for the ball.

Disclaimer: Actually yardages and such may not be totally accurate due to old age.

I was at everyone of those games and left Neyland chanting "Battle's Gotta Go!!!" after the NTS game

Depressing year

I was there. It was awful.

For those who feel they may have missed out on the pain, I can say that dumping a won game to UF in 2014 was worse.
