North never gave up

I haven't seen it mentioned, but I thought it should be talked about.

When Worley threw that pick in the end zone. North never had a chance at it, but he chased that guy down and never stopped running after him. I believe this kid really bleeds and loves wearing Orange. Most people would have given up on that play and he didn't. Worley stopped running but North didn't. That was a bad play, but it's one that stood out to me and it showed Norths never give up attitude. You got to love that about the kid, and the fact that he has hands like a catchers mitt. I think we have a lot of kids on this team with this mentality, and that's why this is one of my favorite teams in awhile.

I just wanted to share that. Thanks for reading. All replies are welcome.

Kyler Kerbyson ran the entire play as we'll.

I could see Butch using that as a teaching moment. What if he drops it? Wouldn't be the first time that has happened. What if you can strip it from behind? North is my kind of player and if the rest of the team shows that kind of fight then this season will be better than predicted. It has been many years since I have been as proud of a Tn team. They are getting that IT factor that champions have. Go Big Orange.

According to a source which Tony Basilio cited anonymously, Butch did use the play by Marquez as a teaching point: "Yesterday the Tennessee coaches lauded Marquez North and Kyler Kerbyson for attempting to run down OU's Julian Wilson on that 100 yard interception return. A source around the program told me that Tennessee's coaches made this the play of the game at a team meeting where they pounded home the importance of finishing plays. . . . One could say that they are lauding hustle over results by making this the 'play of the game.' I believe results will follow consistent hustle in any team sport. . . . Beano pointed out yesterday to me on the air that you wouldn't have seen that type of hustle out of guys on a team down 17 points here in a long time. It's hard to argue with that" (The Tony Basilio Show).

Getting tired of this critique on Worley. He chose not to get blasted by 2 blockers in a useless attempt to catch the guy.

If it's a crime to take issue with Worley's "effort" on that return, then I plead guilty as charged. But let's be clear - I don't fault Worley for failing to make an impossible tackle; I fault him for failing to at least TRY and impede the returner's path so his hustling teammates (North and Kerbyson) could have ran him down from behind and saved a touchdown. If kickers and punters routinely throw themselves in front of returners as the last line of defense, so should a 6'4" 220 lb quarterback.

The punishment Worley endured the rest of the night didn't give him the right to just give up on that game-deciding play. He's supposed to be the leader of the team, but that play sends all of his teammates a message that he's essentially above the rules and expectations that apply to every other player.

I hope Worley did feel embarrassed when Coach Jones used that play as a "teaching moment" for the entire squad. After all, North and Kerbyson weren't doing anything special; they were just doing what any decent football player SHOULD do on a play like that. Their effort might have paid off if Worley hadn't quit on the play. That play personifies exactly the kind of Dooley-esque defeatism that Butch Jones is trying to stamp out, so I suspect that the teaching moment was primarily directed at Worley.

I don't care how tough he was in the pocket the rest of the night, that play was pathetic. Period.

If nothing else he had the opportunity to get a little payback for the beating he endured.

It would be a great way for him to get his neck snapped IMO

The threads not about Worley, but since your mentioning that. All he had to do was get in the way and north would have caught him. Again like I said though, that's not what this thread was about. It's about north not giving up on the play

Makes sense. He should've used it.

Dude, thanks for mentioning this play. Agree wholeheartedly. North deserved a game ball simply for the heart he showed chasing that guy 100 yards. Never-say-die, never-give-up, give-it-all-you-got orange HEART.

Thank you, Mr. North.

Ya. I noticed that also. Not sure who it was but one of our oline ran his azz off but just couldn't quite get there. And agree, worley did the right thing. When something like that happens in a game it's easy to question things... Such as playcalling. Hard to understand why we didn't throw a fade to North or a power run with Hurd. But oh well. Had we went in there we'd have had a game

Great effort by North and great effort by Worley. They both played extremely hard and I am proud of them both. When Worley's head went pounding into the ground earlier in the game, I thought he might have a concussion. But he continued on and the entire offense looked better as the game wore on.

I'm not trying to defend Worely but if you have the game taped like I do. Watch this again... North and Kerbyson never give up but Worely had no chance to even throw himself in front of the runner..He was coming at an angle. much slower than the DB (pik 6 guy) and 2 blockers ready to kill him if he laid out and dove for the runner. Watch it again. Live to play another series. Peyton always makes a half hearted attempt to tackle a intercepter.

I remember during a game against Giles county, when I was playing high school football, I ran a guy down on an 80 yard run and tackled him on the 5 yard line. The very next play they fumbled and we ran it back for a touchdown.

Yeah and if I remember correct wasn't he the recruit before last season that his dad wanted him to stay close to home in NC and not come here? He decided to still come here despite his pops pushing pretty hard for him not too. For a 17 kid to stay heading on his own path even when the man you've looked up to your whole life wants you to do the opposite says a lot also.

I'm at least 95% positive I'm thinking correct! That year was the first year I really got into keeping up with all the details and updates involving the recruiting.
