North Carolina Buyout??

Do you agree with MH's/DD's decision to request out of the UNC/UT game?

Does this really happen all the time in college football? If it does, I figure there should be some rules in place. Something like - you have to have your schedule set by a certain date and that's it. I think this is to late to be making any changes. Everyone has their 2011 schedule set. Now UNC has to find someone, the team they find has to get rid of someone, so that someone has to find someone else etc..... The team we find will get rid of someone, who will have to find someone else and so on. That is too much, the schedule should be set and left at that.

Huh?
There are quite a few teams with open spots on their schedules that won't be finalized until a year or so before that season kicks off.

Are you serious???? Go Look at their schedule last year... I believe 9-10 of their opponents were bowl teams... Their "pansie game was Nevada! They had 3 1000 yard rushers last year... Stanford, USC, Pitt, UCONN... I'm sorry but I like a 65-3 game every now and then... We play the best teams week in and week out so a breather doesn't hurt... Just sucks it's UNC... Rather it was cincy

Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Washington and Washington State all had losing records last year. The only opponents to finish in the top 25 where Pittsburg at 15th and USC at 20th.

UNC will be on par with the rest of the mediocre teams in CFB next year anyway so this really is a non issue. Basically gonna pay them off so we can have an 8th game in Neyland.

Might also want to point out to everyone who believes this is some new thing, we bought out games with teams including Texas Tech, Duke, and Marshall during the 1990s.

With the depleted roster the Vols have, they can sure use this bit of a break . Might save some injuries from fatigue-when we have so many starters that are gonna have to play extra minutes.

I'm betting Hamilton didn't just come up with this on his own.

I understand we have a tough schedule in 2011...no reason to try and push the series back.....you put them on the schedule, freakin' play them....a horrible move by MH IMO...complete idiocracy

I had plans of going to Chapel Hill next year and watchin this game with a buddy who is a TarHeel fan. I hope they don't cancel this! If we are the ones trying to cancel this series, that looks very bad for UT football! I'm really starting to dislike Mike Hamilton!

C'mon man, you gotta be kidding. If this is true it's totally unacceptable.
What happened to anybody, anywhere, anytime?
No way to build a program.
I just can't believe this.
GO VOLS!

It is all about money. It gives UT another home game instead of going to Chapel Hill. Pay them a million for the buy out and make 3 million on a home game. Simple business decision.

We have Cincy, UF, NC, UGA, and I think LSU all in that stretch. Its a tough schedule but do-able. It make the bed that you lie in, with that being said, you make a schedule, honor it. It does make UT look like its running from an ACC team.

Exactly. This doesn't bother me one bit. In fact, when I invent my time machine, i'm going back to 2007 and buy out UCLA from that series.

It has a very desperate feel to it. You can spin it all you like, but this would have been a great series.

Exactly, I would suggest that we sub UT Martin for NC, and then sub Tenn Tech for Cincy, well while we are at it let's see if Hammy can transition us away from Georgia, Florida, Alabama etc. and just slide us over to the OVC. I bet Carson Newman and Tusculum might make room for us on their schedule. I heard Knoxville College and Maryville College had openings.

Ginormous fail.

the part i don't understand is north carolina will probably stink next season.

the defense that everyone is raving about entering this season will be gone either to the nfl or ineligible thanks to the ncaa.

Wow, my perception of Tennessee Football has officially changed. I know we've been down over the past few years but it's just now starting to kick in that we aren't the same Tennessee I grew up watching. Since when does TENNESSEE backout of a game against NORTH CAROLINA in FOOTBALL? I might be able to understand it in basketball, but football.. come'on.

smart move by Hamilton imo.

First, why is everybody getting excited? You're not the AD. I know it's unnatural for fans to wait and "Get The Facts" before going off the deep end. I doubt the AD would make this change just to give him something else to do. Who cares who we play, we either win or we don't. Also, someone took a swipe at Boise State. I saw in one ranking where they were ranked #3 this year, a far cry from where we're at. Personally, I'd rather be the underdog so expectations are lower, players don't get full of themselves, and play harder.:peace: I realy have mixed feelings about this season. We have a tough schedule, I have a lot of confidence in this coaching staff, I think we have a lot of talent even though we're not very deep, but I keep having this queasy feeling about how we'll do. I still think an 8 win season is doable if things go our way and our guys come along. Lots of growing to do. It appears our offense will score and our D will come along. Just like last year, I think these coaches will get the most out of who we have, unlike the fulmer years. At least I don't have to worry about talent rotting on the bench, and for that, I am very thankful. GBO!:victory:

This is embarassing, but I understand what Hamilton is doing, although it's infuriating he tried to reschedule this game, when we would presumably have a stronger program. I'm from Chapel Hill and graduated from UT. After watching UNC beat the crap out of us in basketball a few times this decade, I always wanted to beat them at our HISTORICALLY strongest sport.

I do understand how we are going to try to make the schedule easier, because it is brutal and we need to STOP playing such a hard non-conference schedule on an annual basis, especially if we want to get back to BCS games. Look at LSU and Texas schedules when they won national titles in the past 5-6 years, they played cupcake schedules.

any reason why?

If already posted feel free to delete mods.

because of how strong thr schedule is in the early part of the year. trying to give us better chance at a win during that sequence.

Was setup as Cincinnati, Florida, UNC, Georgia, LSU and Bama. 6 consecutive possible top 25 teams. brutal, even if we were competitive.

I don't understand this. Who cares if it is a hard schedule. I know the program is down but it is still UT football. Without a doubt in my mind UT would beat UNC next season. Wow another home game. It would be different if they were replacing this game with another half way decent team. Why don't they add a team like Boise St. or TCU? A team that would be competitive? I live in Charlotte, NC and work with several UNC fans that are always in my ear. This only adds gas to the fire. Thanks Hamilton.

Whoever scheduled this in the first place made the mistake. We should never play more than one out of conference "strong" team. Teams like NC state, Maryland, Cincy, Texas Tech, georgia tech, pitt, wake forest, syracuse, Uconn, Indiana, etc. should be the types of teams that we play once a year. Its insane to want our boys to play anything more. No one else does. Id rather go 10-2 playing a few nancies, than 8-4 because fans dont want their pride hurt. Strength of schedule takes care of itself by being in the SEC. Scared of N Car, no way! Its just the smart thing to do.
