Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2023-24

Zero surprise re: Poffenberger. She can see Bueckers, Fudd, Ducharme, Muhland Patterson ahead of her on the depth chart next year and that doesn't include this year with Westbrook/Williams still there. She's likely looking for a school to transfer to for the 2nd semester...maybe with a chance to play this year. Her other finalists were Oregon, Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee and Oklahoma...so maybe she'll give the LVs another look.

I'm more surprised by the fact that Mir McLean has decided to waste yet another year of college eligibility as a Husky cheerleader.
One game?

Poff the Magic Dragon couldn't get off UConn's bench last season when there were even less players ahead of the depth chart. At least she left UConn early in her career while her stock still has some value.

Indiana looked like top 5 to me but after their starting 5 it’s a huge drop off and that might come to bite them as the season progresses but we already beat this exact Indiana team so it’s all good😎
I think Ind contends for the B10 title this year, they are really good but as you said, not deep.

A high school kid joining a top 5 college team mid season isn't going to get alot of PT. She was just thrown in at garbage time and was told by Paige that she was going to throw her the ball and her job was to shoot. This year she has been injured, hasn't been practicing let alone suiting up for a game. We have not seen her on the court at full strength since shes been here, so an evaluation by us "experts" has not occurred. According to Geno, she was suppose to see a specialist today, something going on with her shin. Haven't heard anything about it but maybe it was bad news and she would have had to redshirt. If she was worried about the crowd at her position maybe now is the time to make a move. Very sweet girl, sorry to see her go. I wish her the best going forward, so now everyone else can vie for her. Just heard today that her boyfriend is in Oregon, but not verified. Was ranked #30 in the class of 2020. FYI, she wears #4 because that was the age of her brother who died a few years ago.

Auriemma may have told her she'd be better off going somewhere else if she wanted to play after he realized she may always have to be careful not to aggravate the shins -- a difficult injury to ever fully recover from. I worry about Marta's injury being one of those, too. : /

A whole season to recover will hopefully help

I went to watch and it occurred the near the end of the 1st quarter vs South Dakota to maybe see the difference between her knee injury and Rae’s but she was in a lot of pain and withering on the floor completely different from Rae who looked like in pain but her face made it look manageable

Some of that is personality based. No doubt it hurts but I’ve see different reactions to ACLs. Writhing and crying is common. But I’ve also seen players bounce of and try to continue play only to realize their knee doesn’t work. Have also seen players very calmly hobble to the side saying they tore with no obvious pain. Mostly I think it’s just very emotional for players.

Hard to judge the severity of the injury based on initial reaction. Rae seems to be the kind of person that would “suck it up” and not let on how much pain she was actually in.

True but Raven like really awkwardly bent her leg it was awful to look at 😣and Rae’s I still don’t understand

That Atlantis tournament, could be interesting. I expect UConn to be the cream this early in season, GA always has his team ready from the start of every season, he is really good in that way. We might learn something early though.

Will be playing SC in the championship game at Atlantis..( If we both win our first 2 games ) SC will have to play Oregon first in the second round.

Vanderbilt lost to a Hayes-less MTSU now 0-2

It may take a while for Ralph to rebuild that program. Obviously she's going to have to hope she can snag a few top recruits soon, but it's not going to be easy. I'll be curious to hear what her recruiting methods are. Taurasi already sent a shout-out to Vandy on national TV during the WNBA finals, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Taurasi and Bird and other Huskies "just happen to be visiting their longtime friend" during key recruit's visits. They can tell recruits if they had a daughter and she wanted to play basketball in the South, they'd want their daughter to play for Shea. It may take a lot that kind of help to get Vandy back to winning consistently like they did for most of Balcomb's years there.

The good news for Ralph is that I don't think it would be against NCAA rules for Huskies to recruit for Vandy like it has been for years in how big an illegal role DT and Bird have played in actively recruiting kids to Storrs. We'll see.

No South Carolina freshmen?View attachment 412156
SC opened with some staunch competition, and tbh, has a large veteran group back including the top 9 scorers from last season, so it was always going to be tough getting PT for the freshmen this year. The clemson game likely provides minutes for the freshmen, and the first 2-3 games after the Atlantis tournament as well.
Rivers has had a broken nose since the first exhibition game, and Johnson is now out for the year. Feagin and Hall starting to see minutes. Rivers will also soon.
