My opinion, the heart of a team reflects the heart of the coach, and this team played with so much heart tonight. CCM has earned some criticism at times this year, but tonight was not one of them. The fact he kept this team focused and the rally they made, he deserves as much praise for that as the criticism he's received this year. Is he a perfect coach? No, but if he can inspire that kind of heart in his teams, then I'm glad he's OUR coach. We never gave up, we never quit, we fought until the very end. CCM deserves some praise for that because that kind of fight is just as much coaching as any specific strategic move.

I'm proud of this team. They gave everything of themselves. I hate that a ridiculous call at the end of the game is potentially what cost us a win. NCAA has to crack down on officiating and make it more consistent.

I think the last play to Stokes was the right one and would have worked had the ref not called the foul. Stokes gets the ball back after its tipped away, the defense collapses on him with the big on the floor, he dishes to an open and cutting McRae for the game winning shot in the lane If McRae misses, Stokes is rotating to the basket for a wide open rebound putback at the buzzer as his defenders would have left him to try to block McRae.

If the ball goes to McRae off the inbounds at the top of the key, then McRae likely would have taken a step back 18 footer with someone in his face as time expired. We've seen that scenario fail enough I liked the call. The ref just f'd us.

Congrats on the sweet 16 run. They played who was in front of them and stepped up. Nobody expected it midway through the year. It was good to get jitters and to get out of my seat again while watching exciting and winning basketball. They fought.
As for tonight's game:
If you'd like to discuss the game or anything else you saw or disagree with, please do.

--waited too late tonight. Our intensity picked up in desperation time, which somewhat mirrors how we picked up our season when it was desperation time to win out. Not sure why the intensity wasn't there the first half but we were on our heels on D and not attacking the rim at all on offense
--film study-- We looked lost on D, as if we had no idea what Michigan was going to do. Yes they are a very good team and were hot, but the open looks due to our lack of effort and confusion was unexpected.
--this was a game many were concerned with in regards to Maymon and it absolutely killed us tonight. I feel bad for him, but he and Stokes shouldn't have been on the floor at the same time tonight. Maymon should've given Stokes rest and that's it. It's hard to do, but you have to do what will win you the game and they picked their matchup. Maybe I'm thinking it was worse than it was, but if there is a plus/minus for his pt, I'd like to know it if anyone happens to see it.
--The Charge was horse****. Stokes had been basically shoved out of bounds earlier which resulted in a turnover and bucket on the other end and killed momentum. His shoulder did not hit that dude in the chest. First, the guy handchecks, then, Stokes has his shoulder towards the guys shoulder and he flops, just as Stokes is getting hacked from the help D. If the ball flies like that out of the hands of the player, its because his hand or wrist was slapped. If the player gets ball, the ball goes to the floor.
--Not sure what was going on at pg tonight, but we got back in the game, so it's hard to complain really. Barton had a bad turnover when he was hesitant to shoot and I think Martin may have not only obviously not liked the turnover, but didn't like the hesitation, though I think he didn't pull the trigger because nobody was underneath. I'm not sure he played again.

Again, they repped UT well and my phone is still going off with texts from random people. Lets see what the offseason holds.

pretty much agree with the entire post. and would add that CCM should have called a cpl time outs in the last 4 mins of the first half and CCM has absolutely go to start working the officials in game one of next season.

and I think that you have to go to j rich or jordi on our last offense possession instead of stokes..... jmo...

Also, the officiating was atrocious, especially the call at the end. It was like that ref was planning to make that call. The refs were very one sided in the first half too.

there were some calls that stood out, but the no call on Stokes on one end and the charge took away 2 possessions in a one possession game. Glaringly bad calls.
On the other hand though, we only had 3? fouls when we had to start fouling with a minute left, so refs only called 3-4 fouls on us the first 19 minutes, so it's hard to complain outside of the glaring ones that affected the game.
Still shouldn't wait so late to get after it. I hate to say it, but that was the problem last year, almost this year, and we waited too late tonight against a team you need to attack and go toe to toe with from the start.

Watching the last few minutes made me wish we'd have pressed more. Michigan looked lost against the pressure on the inbounds. They better hope they don't get Louisville.

Agree on all accounts. I actually think next years team will surprise everyone and really show the style Cuonzo wants consistently.

Too many times over the years I've seen Vol teams (in multiple sports) fold at the first sign of adversity and basically just give up. Having seen teams like that is what makes watching the show the Vols put on tonight so memorable. Not an ounce of quit. This team made my heart swell. (Then the ref made it burst with a horrible call.)

the way our guys played during this tournament run was absolutely fantastic– they never got too down, they never got too up… they just kept grinding and playing their brand of basketball

in his SIXTH year as a head coach, Martin has shown he has the potential to develop into a great coach

Watching a gif it wasn't a charge, however, the help d does look like he got all ball.

could be but for a ball to fly somewhat up and out of bounds out of a players hands usually means his hands were coming up as a player slaps the wrist and the ball sails out. I haven't focused on it as much on the replay, but it's possible he was fouled by both players at the same time, yet was called for a charge.

I was proud of the team. They finally became the team at the end of the season that everyone thought they could be. Games are about matchups and Maymon just had a bad matchup tonight. That happens. Michigan shot lights out from 3 and we still almost pulled it out. I just wish we could've at least gotten a shot off instead of letting a damn ref decide it.

I was too. Really wish we wouldn't have come out so passive on both ends. Put us in a tough spot and we just ran out of time

Fair assessment, no disagreements. However, I think the first half defense was misleading. It's hard to defend a team that shoots 5/5 or 6/6 from 3. We started going out to contest and immediately they were finding inside men for layups. Michigan shot the ball ridiculously well which left us playing catch up.

UT played incredibly down the stretch and had a couple of tough breaks. Sucks losing to a team that won because of 55% shooting from 3, but at least we gave it our all. There is not one player, tactic, or coach I would blame for this. They simply shot better and got all the bounces to go their way. Proud to be a VOL.

Good write up.

Totally don't understand the dazed look we had in the first half and the lack of weak-side help on D.

I know Michigan spreads the floor and you have to decide to respect the shooters, or sag. I'd much rather get beat by sagging on the weak side and forcing them to kick it back out on the dribble drive. We didn't, and they got way too hmany lay-ups and dunks in the first half.

Offensively, I thought we reverted to our old selves at times...somewhat stagnant and settling for outside shots.

Not pulling Maymon off GRIII earlier, as others have said, was a head scratcher to me.

Regardless, team represented well and didn't quit. Hope we haven't seen the last of Stokes in a Vol uni.

The life of the Tennessee Bball fan...getting to the mountain top and getting a glimpse of the promised land...but never getting to step foot into it.

Agree We were and look sluggish the entire half...I don't understand why...

When we got the ball back with 9 seconds left down 1, I was thinking, "okay, we can win it right here, but worst case scenario, McRae or Stokes get it to the rim, get fouled, make 1 out of 2 to send it into overtime, and we will destroy them there, much like Iowa." Props to Nicodemus for making sure these guys had some gas in the tank down the stretch. Michigan looked tired at the end. As Sparty said, we simply ran out of time. Dug slightly too deep a hole, and the missed free throws (which have not been a problem the last 10 games or so) didn't help.

The charge call on Stokes was atrocious. The phantom 4th foul on Maymon was even worse, although it was a blessing in disguise, as we were a much better team with Armani on the floor tonight.

Overall, I think CCM coached a pretty good game, but I do have to question the decision to go for steals at the end instead of fouling immediately to leave as much time on the clock as possible. We could have had 5-6 seconds instead of 2 and would have presumably gotten a much better look than McRae's halfcourt heave. And yeah, you could say, well, if they made both free throws, they could have just fouled us when we got the ball back, but you can't just assume they're going to make them both. Dude did miss the second one when we finally put them on the line.

Good points, all. It appeared that we were the team that was surprised by Michigan's play. But it should have been the other way around. It wouldn't have taken much preparation to know they were gonna throw 4 guards at us.
That charge call at that point in the game chaps my ass. I can see it if someone plants their shoulder into the chest of the defender, but not the shoulder as he's trying to go around. Total and complete horse****, as you said.
