Nolen: "If I was looking for NIL money..."

Nolen, an Under Armour All-American, chose the Aggies over Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida

If we are doing better than these three at NIL money, that would be super surprising - or maybe not. GA and Bubba have the incentive of "come here to play for championships". Gators? well they are a mess right now.
A. It’s ALWAYS about the money, especially if someone says it’s not about the money.
B. He pocked a&m because none of the other schools pursued him.
C. If he’s the #1 player in America I’ll kiss yer ass, doubt that kid ever sees the field in any meaningful way.

Well, that's what was insinuated about To'oTo when he went to Bama. "Guy is gonna sit the bench watchin' those 5* lb's"
If you check my post history, you'd find out I was not one of those guys. Henry T. was a dang good player and anybody who said otherwise was kidding themselves. Last year Henry T. fell into the trap sometimes of trying to do too much which is common for good players on bad teams who don't trust their teammates to be where they are supposed to be and/or their coaches to put people in a position to be successful.

But they will always be in the mix and thats important we cant say the same
We don't know that. At one point, we dominated uga every year. At one point, we dominated the tide for around 7 years straight. Yeah, they're good now, but nobody can say for certain that they're gonna keep it up for years. We also don't know exactly what JH and staff are building here, it may be special, and we may be playing for championships soon.

I hate that we lost him to A&M or to anyone for that matter. Super talent but I do feel that Garners coaching style scared the sh** outta Nolen. The multiple injuries probably wouldn’t work for Garner. Good luck and hope to see him in a year or two.

Yes, Our family enjoys the paper and have been long time subscribers.

Wonder what their subscription level is compared to say 1980's. Internet and cable news has really impacted the print media and our local leadership did not pivot well IN MY OPINION, Maybe it is not possible. As an old fart I miss guys like Siler and Byrd, and West and creative locals like Dyer. Our paper guys followed the snarky plan and that is not for me and lots of folks in my generation. I don't need print guy Jim Rome wanna be's in my life. The old guys could completely share the truth, even when ugly, with a level of class and professionalism and limited their work to reporting events, not trying to influence them. The paper is an even worse value preposition for me than $4 coffee. It seems to work for you.... so be it.

I probably watched the same videos and you aren't wrong. But I watched Phillips' videos too... and you could have been watching the same guy. The one thing I noticed about Phillips though was that he never seemed to get turned. His shoulders stayed parallel to the LOS. Phillips is said to have a high motor and is very intelligent. Not sure if he's underrated or Nolen is overrated or both... but I really, really don't feel bad about UT's end of that bargain.

Jordan Phillips played on an 8A Florida (highest division) football team that was absolutely terrible. He was commonly double-teamed yet managed 11.5 sacks and 29 TFL. He was also a competition weightlifter and wrestler. Phillips had offers from Auburn, Florida, and Georgia.

I definitely can be placed in the "sour grapes" category on Nolen, but I am extremely pleased with how things turned out.

In my experience, lazy and quit go hand in hand more often than not. There are cases(very few IMO) where a kid is just bored in HS against players far inferior to himself and his competitive drive kicks in when he goes up against equal and better players. I'll be curious to see how this one plays out. I work too damned hard for what money I have so I'm no betting man. If I were, however, inclined to drop some $$ and wager on who has the better college career, I'll put my money on West and Phillips.

I think he is not a good fit for a team that has a fast Offense ergo the D is on the field with many more snaps than the normal D. Still a take. I see him as someone that has to come out a lot for rest and like big UGA Jordan Davis teams do a quick snap as UT did against UGA and catch Davis lumbering off the field, Flag. It may happen to UGA again versus Michigan he's very slow getting off the field. These guys were so much bigger in HS they just stay in lean on an O-lineman and take a play off while on the field.

...I would have come to UT." Hmm, maybe we do have this NIL thing figured out.

Walter Nolen responds to rumors of NIL money playing a factor in his college decision
Texas A&M is a great opportunity. Tennessee's current staff, IMO offers plenty however. I like our intangibles and the kids we have all apparently see the brotherhood and family vibe as the most important thing outside of coaching and PT. He didn't feel Tennessee, screw it. After performing as well as we did, I'm not concerned about the ability to recruit or that we lack something to sell to recruits. Unless I see something I haven't yet that makes me feel differently, I believe in the staff and these kids that are returning and the kids we landed-- moreso after this recruiting cycle, and especially in this case where Nolan passed up the opportunity to be coached by a guy like Garner that could be a HC somewhere.

Nolan should just admit the following:

I am not capable of getting in the type physical Condition to play at UT
I am not capable of being coach by the best in the Business (CRG)
I want $$$$ for my average Services
Texas A&M has enough DL and I am not sure where I am going to fit in.
I can always transfer.
I want my boots and pants
I need to be disciplined
As in HS I will move from place to place until I fit
My dad makes my decision
My handler makes my decisions
White Lies don't hurt
I am being programed and managed.
I should not speak.

Well good for his pure and heart felt decision!! Would hate to think A&M would not match or provide more money than UT.
Lets not have anymore posting about this A&M signee!!

It's always about the money

Well not always. There are still some guys/gals out there who WANT to play for a particular school or have a degree from a highly acclaimed academic dept. in a particular school or just play for a beloved state university. I know what I am saying is "money is not everything" to some guy/gals, but the particular love of a place, coach, geographic area, many other things besides money are most important to them.

Just a guess... camps. The recruiting sites in particular struggle with accurately rating linemen because they seldom face very good competition in HS. Camps weigh more heavily. A couple of good performances and great measurables... impress those who spread the stars.

I don't know about lazy. I saw enough video to say he isn't soft. But there is evidence that he had a habit of not playing with a high motor consistently. I think it is widely accepted that he took plays off. Some have mentioned a smaller OL who is likely not a D1 prospect who handled him in the playoffs. Those are real concerns

IMHO based on that primarily... I don't think it was money. I think he's right. There are people around UT who would have paid him. I personally think it was about Rodney Garner and Heupel. Heupel doesn't promise anything but an opportunity to compete. He emphasizes it. He emphasizes "fit" and that he doesn't want guys to come if they don't think they are a fit. Garner makes no bones about how he coaches players or what his demands are. He doesn't apologize for pushing guys to their limits.... and I can't imagine him pushing someone to sign with him if they aren't ready for his style.

Nolen may have made the very best choice for himself... or everyone now throwing rocks at him may be celebrating him coming home through the portal in a year or two.

Honestly, it is pretty dumb for fans to take personal shots at him. None of us "know"... and we want to leave him a bridge.
Very nice! Thoughtful! While we may occasionally clash on our thoughts, I like to hear your thoughts. Here's the other 99 likes I could not give you in your post!

I don't think I've ever posted about Nolen's perceived work ethic. I haven't seen him play. The accounts that I've read about him being extremely talented, but lazy or takes plays off isn't what we want. I know that CRG doesn't sound like a coach who does either. That's why many Do left and some didn't see the field because of their lack of effort. Talent is nothing without hard work. Talent has to be developed and hard work is a learned mindset. He's going to be in for a rude awakening when he's up against some hard working OL who's stronger and more determined than him. It's all cool when you're bigger than everyone in HS, but in college everyone is bigger and better. It's like you're Tyson in HS, then you mess around and run up against Holyfield.

I watched Nolen play 2 games this year. No doubt about his talent. Whether that transfers to being an All American in college is another matter. Let there be no doubt that UT and Garner wanted this kid badly. Funny thing is if he had flipped to UT the posters on here who insist on tearing him down would have been calling him Superman lol. He's gone so maybe we should move on.

The Ocoee HS team was 6-4 and finished 24th in 8A rankings. They were ranked #103 out of 2,000+ schools in FL. How is that "absolutely terrible"?
