No Worries for Defense

Okay I've watched, read and analyzed the Defensive issues since the game Saturday. My observation is as follows:

1) BG has a really good offense and will win many games this year. They will beat Maryland Saturday.
2) The adjustments that were made at half time really showed in 2nd half. Great coaching on UT part especially with Martinez out. BG on got 3 more pts from 12 min mark left in 3rd quarter.
3) Linebackers were really neutralized due to passing game of BG and their extremely fast tempo.
4) 1st half playing straight man with 1 safety is easy to beat if you have 2 good receivers and a QB that can get the ball there. BG obviously has that and I'm giving credit where credit is due. Just because they play for BG doesn't mean they are not talented. There are many players playing on Sunday's that came from schools most of VN have never heard of.
5) It really seemed that the initial game plan was to play straight man, stop the run and put the pressure on BG Qb to make throws and he did.

So heading to OK game this week they have a decent QB who was a walk on at Texas Tech before transferring. I don't think he is anywhere close to as good as the BG QB who was a transfer from Western Kentucky.

OK has 2 true freshman starting on the Oline. Their halftime score against Akron was 14-3. Perrine struggled and so did the back up. Neither gained a 100 yds against Akron and in fact as a team only had 121 total yds.

Passing 388 with 76 of that on 1 play. They were on 4 of 13 on 3rd down against AKRON and gave up 2 sacks to them.

We win by 17 or more! Book it!!

So heading to OK game this week they have a decent QB who was a walk on at Texas Tech before transferring. I don't think he is anywhere close to as good as the BG QB who was a transfer from Western Kentucky.

OK has 2 true freshman starting on the Oline. Their halftime score against Akron was 14-3. Perrine struggled and so did the back up. Neither gained a 100 yds against Akron and in fact as a team only had 121 total yds.

Passing 388 with 76 of that on 1 play. They were on 4 of 13 on 3rd down against AKRON and gave up 2 sacks to them.

We win by 17 or more! Book it!!

A walk on who has walked on at TWO D1 programs. Beat out a back-up who DEFEATED Tenn last year.

I always love when fans who clearly don't watch other teams try to comment a few days before a game. I thought Dobbs should've started last year against us....but that's besides the point.

Backup? We have no "backup" RB. They both start in the backfield. If you saw a "backup" it was #34 Daniel Brooks or #28 Alex Ross. You might wanna check Mixons highlights fom Sat before you use the word "struggle". Did the O-line struggle early on, yes. That's a concern for us.

Yes, we started slow in the first game. The same way Bama, TCU, Baylor many other schools started slow.

I see more OU fans respectful of Tenn talent than I see the other way around.

But it's cool though. We're 7-8 deep rotation on the D-line, probably the best of the Stoops era. Biggest WR corp of Stoops era (watch out for #81) and a OC who hopefully calls to our strengths.

only big concern i have is Dobbs running/converting 3rd and 6-7's and us not getting off the field. Running QBs are historically a thorn in Stoops side. Oh, and our 2ndary that is unproven based on the awful season last year.

Otherwise, we have no injuries, our kids want to play in neyland, everyones excited....I like our chances on paper and whatever happens happens.

Go back and look at BGSU's next 4 possessions after the 12 min mark in the 3rd. 3 of them ended in UT's red zone. 2 ended on obvious pass interference calls in the end zone that weren't made. The next ended inside the 5 with an unforced fumble on the read option. The last ended on another play where pass interference should have been called when the DB hooked the arm of the intended receiver on the deep sideline pass they kept burning you with. After that, BGSU brought in the 2nd string because the game was out of hand. They could have easily scored at least 50. Second half adjustments had nothing to do with it. It wouldn't have effected the overall outcome, but your defense got torched all day long. Sorry, just being honest.

I'm curious why you would assume a QB who walked on and won the starting job at two different Power 5 schools, and was given Big 12 newcomer of the year honors as a freshman wouldn't be as good a guy who could only get on with WKU and BGSU? I'm not saying he's not better because we haven't seen enough of Mayfield to give an accurate assessment, but the odds are heavily against it.

I can assure you our recievers are far more talented than BGSU. You'll see.

All that aside, I expect a great game on Saturday. Both teams have weaknesses that they better get cleaned up in a hurry, and both looked very impressive in other regards. I'd be shocked if either team won by more than 10. It's an intriguing matchup to say the least.

To the Sooner fans commenting on here. Let me be clear. All Tennessee fans are not SEC homers. We know when the other team has talent. This game will be night and day from last year. Our OL is better. Our backfield is better. Our WR core is faster. Our DL is better. LB and secondary is a concern. But by no means does every UT fan think we will walk all over Oklahoma. This game has the makings of a tight game to the bitter end. Or it could be one sided either way. I personally hope for a hell of a game. Both teams have questions. But both teams are loaded with talent. That being said. I hope all the Sooner fans are treated with respect Saturday night. Neyland is a wonderful place to see a game. Good luck to both teams. BGSU shot themselves in the foot with that fumble though. No one to blame but themselves for that one. Like I said earlier, wouldn't have changed the outcome anyway. Your offense was hitting on all cylinders.

1. Vols fans, don't sell Mayfield short. He's a talented QB with a lot of quality targets down field. And despite a poor first showing, Perine isn't dog chow; we gotta keep a lid on him, too. But Mayfield is the key: our front seven gotta get him off balance early and keep him there. It's our best bet at winning the game.

2. Sooner fans, Josh Dobbs is gonna be a major problem for your team, but you really need to watch out for Jalen Hurd. He's your biggest issue, because he's going to keep you from shutting down the run game. And as you get frustrated with that, and keep pouring more resources into trying to stop Hurd, you're going to start exposing other openings that Dobbs will take advantage of with his arm.

Respect gotta go both ways. Two really fine football teams meeting in Neyland Saturday.

At the end of the day OU has to go back to Oklahoma..its a loss no matter what.

Oklahoma has a very talented backfield. The question would be how to use them with the lack of experience on the offensive line. We had the same issues last year, until we were forced to play a mobile quarterback. Oklahoma has done a good job on getting the RB's involved in the passing game. One of our problems is picking up running backs on passing routes, unless they try it to the side of the field where Cam lines up. We all know how that turns out for running backs. If Oklahoma can find a way to run the ball, then we will have no choice but load the box which will open their "air raid attack". If we can stop the run without loading the box, we can play up to 6 DB's and put up a "no fly zone" for their attack. Our D line will be tested early to see if they can generate a pass rush, because after the performance of our secondary last week Oklahoma will be pass happy in the first quarter.

If the D-Line comes out flat again Saturday, then I'll be worried. I think it's going to be a great game.
