No Talent

You guys might not have Bama talent but you recruited better than a lot of teams did over Butch's tenure

I wouldn't be shocked if we get beat at least once in the next 2 weeks. Not saying it WILL happen...but I wouldn't be shocked. We are a really slow...bad...football team. AGAIN!

I was hoping that Pruitt would at least end the nightmare. Give him credit for going for it on 4th down. That's nice....but it means nothing at the end of the day. There were multiple times we only had 10 guys on defense for gawds sake. How does THAT engender any faith in this new coach? Even junior college teams with new coaches manage to get the right personnel on the field. AT LEAST the correct amount of players. Yeah..it's one game. Give him time etc etc....but the first showing was a horrific one and I gleaned absolutely nothing to indicate Pruitt will be any better than Butch in any way. So he talks better in his pressers. Wonderful . That's nice. He's got a tough, no nonsense persona. That's great. I know high school coaches who have that same talent. It could get better. I hope it does, but I saw NOTHING from this game Saturday that gives me any indication we are ANY better off with Pruitt than we were with Butch Jones.

That 10 men on the field is on Pruitt and there is absolutely no excuse for that dooleyesk mistake, this makes Pruitt look bad to everyone.......if this continues, there is little hope he can turn things around
Very little

Experience just as valuable as talent. The talent differential can be minimal but a guy that has been playing three years that has any talent is better than a five star freshman in most cases. I think our talent level is on par with W Va but their experience level is overwhelming compared to ours.

"I'm just tied of hearing about Butch's classes. It's not real. He signed 30+ kids in those 2 top 7 classes. "

BUT when those kids recruited are given voluntary workouts? you get injuries and no development/ We had a much higher recruiting ranking than WVU- our players are not developed. S&C in the SEC is CRITICAL- Butch ran a soft program, takes a while to build SEC football players, more than 8 months. Its not the talent, it was the program.

Werent we saying last year that we cant use lack of talent as an excuse anymore?
I serioiusly doubt that Butch managed to sign every overrated player that each season offered him.

Maybe those that didn't bother to check. The reality is that the secondary is in shambles. Just look at what Pruitt is recruiting, he knew.
He is playing the freshmen now because our upper classmen are what they are. The freshmen have potential but there will be growing pains. JP did the exact same thing at UGA. He started 2 freshmen his first year.
The bad part, UGA's freshmen we're just more talented.

I just posted this in another thread, Butch recruited good players, you could see that in the offers they had. He didn't develop them at all, players stagnated or got worse here. Can Pruitt develop players? No idea, and that's scary.

I agree Butch recruited good. Some players just have IT factor and drive.Don’t need to be coached up. See Dobbs, Barnett& few more. The problem was the 4 stars that had to be coached up to play to or above ability. They didn’t get that push.

After watching the WV game I was amazed that Tenn. just does not have the talent to win big games this year. Jordon did a great job but he can't do it alone. The recruiting for tenn. the last two years is just not good. I think a lot of player were just over rated coming out of high school. I watched every SEC game Saturday and was amazed at the talent other teams have in the SEC. We looked like a bad high school team who looked to the side lines for instructions on what to do. Also there was the same bad play calling from up stairs trying to do the run up the middle and throw on third down. We did have some good pass plays but a little to late. I'll give this coach a chance because he inherited a nightmare from Butch Jones. Tenn. has got to their reciting program up to par with other SEC teams. I do not like any of Tenn. last QB's since T-Martin. Why do other teams in the SEC get QB's that can throw the ball and run???? I think we will be lucky to win 5 games this year because we just have to play some very good football teams ie: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and so on!!! I will be at the East Tenn. game so I hope for a win to make it a good day. Fulmer really needs to get out there and help scout talent from around the nation and just not local boys in the South. If I was a young player would I want to come to tenn.? when all the other teams have great coaches? Its been over twenty years since Tenn. has had a great team. Let get our recruiting program fixed!!!!!!!!!
Clausen beat Florida in Gainesville twice, Ainge was good, Even Crompton was good his last year, Dobbs? Clausen was than Martin hands down. For whatever reason people didn't like him, but not even Peyton came close to beating Florida.

I recommend reading a long book or three and check back later this season, it might do wonders.

We had freshman in our secondary getting torched by a legitimate Heisman contender and a likely Biletnikoff Award winner. During the lightning delay the aforementioned had an extra 1.5 hrs to scheme and make adjustments. This game WV would of been tough on any defense especially one that couldn't get any pressure on Grier.

We’re in a Groundhog Day paradox again, new coach and system with a need to recruit some serious talent, two to three years minimum before we become a real contender again..

We’ve Clearly outrecruited as much talent as that WV team has the past five years. They’re clearly putting their talent to use much better though.

WV has 6 4-stars on their entire roster, 6. A lot of their roster wasn’t ranked at all, meaning two star. They buy into the system and they are well coached.

It's almost another total rebuild. I don't see the talent necessary up front on either side of the ball to do much for a few years. Those guys usually are slower developing positions anyway. It's unfortunately going to take some time. Butch Jones was a waste of 5 years , just like Dooley was a waste of 3..

Thanks for the "Rah! Rah!" young man. 'Glad you're a football fan. Your perception of football talent, though, seems to indicate that you've had little-to-no experience actually playing the game of football. Talent just wasn't in the formula. Bottom line? WVU's had their system at full go for a couple of years. Their team is senior heavy and, as any present or former footballer understands, the plethora of quick-twitch reactions required to out-juke their opponents comes from repetition. This can make even the best of athletes look bad whenever their opponent possesses that advantage. Even with just a couple more weeks to review their mistakes and work hard on what they've found out (the hard way...which is sometimes the only way) what bad tendencies they need to work out, you just may change your tune about the talent that's possessed by these youngsters. Now. Have your milk and cookies and take a nap.

Wrong players in the game.

I am curious on what other players should have been playing? We got picked apart on D because we couldn't create pressure at all. Our DB's looked slower than they really are because they were baited by a veteran QB. I am very disappointed in the DB play considering that is CJP's specialty. On offense I feel like Helton called a terrible game. People keep complaining on the 7-10 yard passes although those were open the entire game. I think I saw us try a RB screen what 1 time? If you hit the quick hitters and the RB screens a few times that D is going to back off a little opening things up. I am not really upset on the loss. I am upset that we looked totally outmatched though.

We played a very talented well coached team Saturday. We were outclassed. It was good to experience that. You bet your A$$ Pruitt is coaching them up. GBO!!

Not impressed, still love my Vols, just feel like an individual could be charged with felony child abuse to raise your children as Vols fans, so much sadness ahead

Looks like we may have a QB. That's a great place to start.
Tremendous place to start. We apparently also have at least one really good RB. Callaway and Jennings, though Jennings ONLY targeted twice (another topic), seemed to have no problem getting open. So, those are positives. Pruitt seemed to think, in presser today, that most of OL errors were of technical nature than mental errors (except Trey off sides)...better to have something you can teach towards than mental lapses. I feel DB's will get better as season goes (Pruitt's background), but my biggest concern is DL. I'm afraid we just don't have near the ability we need to make those crucial stops on 3rd down, either pressing the QB or stopping the run on 3rd and short. Hope I'm wrong.

I think (hope) in the next 4 games you will see this team players and coaches take huge steps forward. Might be hard to see because of the schedule but I think so.

We sure don’t have the depth yet on DL but that’s why you play the freshman now to build it up

Should have. Pretty good recruiting average over the past few years...OH YEAH. Players have to be developed. And they clearly haven't been.
I second this. Without doing any research, I believe we have a fair number of Butch Jones recruits on active NFL rosters, so I would venture to say it's more a lack of good coaching than lack of talent. I've been following UT football since '86, starting with Dooley through Jones, this is the toughest stretch of football I've seen. I know it's hard, but let's keep everything in perspective. We got handled by a potential top 10 team with a Heisman contending QB. It's a long season guys, and we're only one game in. GB🍊
