After watching the WV game I was amazed that Tenn. just does not have the talent to win big games this year. Jordon did a great job but he can't do it alone. The recruiting for tenn. the last two years is just not good. I think a lot of player were just over rated coming out of high school. I watched every SEC game Saturday and was amazed at the talent other teams have in the SEC. We looked like a bad high school team who looked to the side lines for instructions on what to do. Also there was the same bad play calling from up stairs trying to do the run up the middle and throw on third down. We did have some good pass plays but a little to late. I'll give this coach a chance because he inherited a nightmare from Butch Jones. Tenn. has got to their reciting program up to par with other SEC teams. I do not like any of Tenn. last QB's since T-Martin. Why do other teams in the SEC get QB's that can throw the ball and run???? I think we will be lucky to win 5 games this year because we just have to play some very good football teams ie: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn and so on!!! I will be at the East Tenn. game so I hope for a win to make it a good day. Fulmer really needs to get out there and help scout talent from around the nation and just not local boys in the South. If I was a young player would I want to come to tenn.? when all the other teams have great coaches? Its been over twenty years since Tenn. has had a great team. Let get our recruiting program fixed!!!!!!!!!

We’ve recruited as much talent as that WV team has the past five years. They’re clearly putting their talent to use much better though.

Butch was able to recruit very well because. (1) he promised immediate playing time. (2) he recruited legacy players to come to U T so he did not have to do very my h convincing to the parents
JG came to TN because Butch knew JGs dad from when coached at Rutgers

I don't whole-heartedly agree with you, OP, about your statements.

First, our team looks in better shape (read: bigger) than last year. I think we are a bigger team overall and not skinny, lanky frail looking like Candy and UK players where they could fold like cheap foil or get injured (like the whole team did last year).

I think Butch hit on a lot of good talent. Look at Jalen Hurd for example. We didn't have a back of that caliber since Gerald Riggs. No, it didn't work out and he left. But that pointed to a greater symptom of the troubles brewing within the program.

Look at Dobbs, Barnett, Hurd, Kamara, Wolf, Trey Smith, Chandler, Tuttle, Jennings, and Josh Malone. Those players were all outstanding talent and were/are difference makers. Those were Jones' kids. Don't discredit what the man brought in. Its what he didn't develop, clearly now that he's gone, that sticks out the most with our current crop.

Gurantano looks the part and I'm very high on this kid. He's exciting to watch. He needs a little meat on his bones, lol, but he can stand up to a challenge, and thats more than you can say with any other QB we've had in recent memory excluding Dobbs.

Look things are not as bad as it seems with recuiting. If you look at the years we had a decent Defense the biggest thing we are missing is Dominant DE's or DT's that can get to the QB. In other words we are missing a pass rush in a big way. I am just puzzled that we are not trying to recruit talented dominant 5 star DE's. Cause we need one or even two in a big way. JMO

Should have. Pretty good recruiting average over the past few years...OH YEAH. Players have to be developed. And they clearly haven't been.
I'm just tied of hearing about Butch's classes. It's not real. He signed 30+ kids in those 2 top 7 classes. Attrition rate of 30+%.

Speaking of talent: The following U T alum were cut from NFL teams yesterday

Eli Wolf, Kendall Vickers, Emanuel Mosley, Colron Jumper, Josh Smith, Evan Berry, Tyler Bray

Dooley and Butch killed us. I am very dissatisfied with this team. No choice but to suffer through yet another underwhelming season. Good or bad, we are stuck with Pruitt. We should win easily next two weeks, then need to find something else to do on the next 4 Saturdays.
You might want to make that 5

Tennessee is not on the level of SC.....right now.

But after last year......everyone should have seen this. Hopefully JP can/will get this turned around in 2 or 3 years (1 or 2 after this one)

I really dont think we can call Butchs recruiting very well. If you want to say as far as what the star rankings said, then you might have a,point. But someone said in another post made the point that we need to deduct a half to one full star for almost every one of Butchs recruits. The fact that he was a massive failure at coaching these guys is even worse.

I think WVU will be a top 10 team very shortly. We do have talent but not on there level but we have talent. We are a 7-5 team. We will steal a couple. GBO

The recruiting ranking (stars) are decent predictors of talent, as shown on this board so many times. However, the real impact is that the players are developed and that the players are used in the right positions, which UT has shown in spades over last few years. Warrior played well last year, so I expect him to pick it up. Kongbo has the opportunity

On being cut from NFL teams, they had the opportunity, which speaks highly of the inherent talent pool that UT has squandered.

We are lacking in talent on the defensive side of the ball and on the Oline. Almost all of our Dbacks are 3* recruits that most top tier programs didn’t offer. Same for the Oline outside of Trey Smith.

Agree BOT, and I believe that star deduction was to be applied per year they were coached under the Botch, so a 4 star coming in would end up as a 2 or worse by their 4th year. And I believe it's harder to undo bad coaching by then than to apply good coaching to younger raw talent, which is why we should (and I believe Pruitt will) start more and more young players as the season progresses.

I just posted this in another thread, Butch recruited good players, you could see that in the offers they had. He didn't develop them at all, players stagnated or got worse here. Can Pruitt develop players? No idea, and that's scary.

I wouldn't be shocked if we get beat at least once in the next 2 weeks. Not saying it WILL happen...but I wouldn't be shocked. We are a really slow...bad...football team. AGAIN!

I was hoping that Pruitt would at least end the nightmare. Give him credit for going for it on 4th down. That's nice....but it means nothing at the end of the day. There were multiple times we only had 10 guys on defense for gawds sake. How does THAT engender any faith in this new coach? Even junior college teams with new coaches manage to get the right personnel on the field. AT LEAST the correct amount of players. Yeah..it's one game. Give him time etc etc....but the first showing was a horrific one and I gleaned absolutely nothing to indicate Pruitt will be any better than Butch in any way. So he talks better in his pressers. Wonderful . That's nice. He's got a tough, no nonsense persona. That's great. I know high school coaches who have that same talent. It could get better. I hope it does, but I saw NOTHING from this game Saturday that gives me any indication we are ANY better off with Pruitt than we were with Butch Jones.

We have playmakers at most of the offensive skill positions but without a solid OL it’s difficult to do anything. Defense is a different story, we have some young guys that no doubt have potential but at the moment we don’t seem to have many playmakers.
