No Natty without Elite Recruiting

Auburn averaged 16th, Clemson 13th in their NC wins. LSU 12th. Although not a NC win but Washington probably averaged in the 40s for their recruiting, they made playoffs. Oregon could not be in Top 15 for their NC title game (4 years average).

Even for NCs, 21% of the teams were recruiting below top 10. That is a big % to overlook.

So yes, you can win NC or be elite without Top 10 recruiting if you know how to develop players and coach good games.

Then it won't be under this staff

Given how many of those 8th or below, they should change the title to "great recruiting".
I was unaware that 12th, 13th and 16th were elite.

That I agree to. This staff has underachieved so far. I doubt they would win with a Top 5 average.

It is also to fact that even if we had #2 class , we would play Alabama twice a year (regular season and SEC game) and with Nick being a better coach than Butch, we would lose both games with comparable talent.

Yeah this past season was all I needed to witness. I hope he overachieves this season and we keep him but I doubt it. I want the best for the program but I just don't see butch taking us there. I like the guy as a person just not as a coach

^^^ this all day, you can mark up 2 losses for the vols every year at a minimum. With Saban at the Helm there is no way that Butch and this staff will be able to beat him. Period.

I disagree. Now that 4 teams make it in the championship I feel like we have a better chance to win one versus old days where one loss to Bama or FLa did you in. I agree with you though on having to play Bama 2x in a year is difficult though.

which underscores the importance of recruiting. Thankfully, Butch recruited lights out 2014 & 2015.

If we finish ranked 20th this year in 247sports rankings that will be an average ranking of #11 over 4 years. Of course, there has been some attrition (Preston Williams, Jalen Hurd etc.) but that is still a very respectable average.

We are not falling off the cliff. Did recruiting ebb this year? Yes, of course but we also don't need immediate play makers like we did in 2014 & even 2015. Although we are getting a few in this class anyways.

Using 247sports composite that is 33 4* on the roster going into 2017 season and 2 5*

For the first time IN A LONG time the majority of our 1st and 2nd team will be 4* players.

Job well done by Butch and company!

***Note: The last time the #1 ranked Dual Threat QB took the reins he led his team to National Championship games in his sophomore and junior years:

2014 Top Dual-Threat Quarterback Recruits

2016 Top Dual-Threat Quarterback Recruits

Let's step back and see what happens this year and next before we start pushing to start over again. If you look at the overall picture, Butch is doing a solid B to B+ job, in my opinion.

Looking forward to celebrating signing day tomorrow and all the young men who sign with TENNESSEE!

GO VOLS!!!

None of them use the buddy system
All of them have better position coaches

As one of the many self-appointed Volnation stats gurus, I can confirm these recruiting rankings are bunk.

No Champions of Life Adjustment was applied to any of these numbers.

Nothing to see here, people.
