No Great Coach is going to come to Knoxville for One Year.

9 defensive starters returning. Offense starting the season healthy. I would think nothing but upside. 8 wins and most would b happy

According to my buddy Jimmy Hyams of WNML, the “Sports Animal” in Knoxville, Chavis turned down an offer this week to return to Tennessee as Derek Dooley’s defensive coordinator.

This is where I stopped reading.

Really, just stop, please. They can offer any time frame they want to. Its just as likely that CDD will still be here in 5 years as it is for 70% of the other coaches in college football.

I find it funny that Hyams is the only one really reporting that we offered. Everyone else quotes Hyams. Unless he called Chavis personally, right before championship game no less, then I doubt Hyams has a clue whether he was offered or not.

Ofcourse, Hyams does have a timing issue when involving big games.

What do you mean? No "great coach" or no "big name"?

There are more great coaches than there are big names. Just because the name isn't big doesn't mean a guy isn't a great coach. The big problem is that most people associate greatness with fame.

Good article and of course Chavis is mad how things went down. At least he still talks good about UT.

No great AD will put this program through another coaching search next year ... b/c then, really, no great coach will come to Knoxville.

IMO, Dooley will be given the time to fix this mess. He's one of the few willing to try in the first place.

So let's ask "Why?" 7 times.

Why? Because there is job uncertainty.

Why? Because Dooley is considered to be on the hot seat unless he wins in '12.

Why? Because he had a bad first year followed by a worse second year.

Why? Because his team lacked talented upperclassmen and leadership.

Why? Because Fulmer failed for 3 consecutive years to recruit effectively and Kiffin's one year didn't help.

Why? Because it left a huge void in the roster.

But WHY? does this put Dooley on the hot seat? Because the UT media and fans fail to consider the condition of the program when Dooley inherited it.

The perception that Dooley either is or will be on the hot seat is what you submit is driving the supposed difficulty in finding coaches, right? So basically what you have said here is that the irrational expectations of UT's fans and media are discouraging good coaches from coming.

I think I can agree with that assuming of course no one is interested as you and others speculate.

I doubt they are just offering 1 year deals. Most think a 3 year deal is what is on the table. What I think the hold up is would be the fine print saying that the buyout after year 1 would be very low or nothing at all. I can't see any way that Hart would sign a DC to a 3 year deal with the whole 3 years being paid out no matter what.

I can't find what Buddy Green makes but I saw where the HC at Navy makes 486,000. I would expect the DC to make much less. Maybe CDD and Hart are looking for another budget hire. It worked so well with the hiring of CDD, it just makes sense.

Navy finished 86th nationally in total defense this past season(2011). The Midshipmen finished 5-7 and endured a six-game losing streak — their longest since 2002 -- in which they four times yielded at least 35 points and twice gave up at least 56.

^^^ Looks like a perfect fit for the direction of our program. :banghead2:

BTW, I LOVE saying I told you so... and I did. Two years ago DD was hired. I told people he would have to "show" progress by year 3 or he would be on the hotseat. You guys have made me a prophet.

Why? Because Hart and the higher ups have lost almost all confidence in Dooley's ability to win here. You can deny, tell me that is not the truth, call it a rumor if you like. That won't change a thing.

CDD could be given 10 years and he would not be able to fix "this mess". The man is not going to all a sudden learn how to coach at a high level. He is not going to all a sudden out coach his peers. The only thing CDD has done in 2+ years at Tennessee is lose ball games and recruit middle tier SEC recruiting classes. Just about ANY other coach could have done as good or better. Moving forward with a winning coach could do nothing but give this program a shred of hope and a chance to win.

Why wouldnt a big name coach come in and say to his self "im good enough to help Dooley turn our this program, one year my foot. We will be here for a while"

If your a big name, why not have a mentally that you will kick butt & turn around a program.

If you cant, you will find a job with the snap of a finger

You make a very good point. I think the fact that better DCs are not interested speaks volumes to what other coaches think of CDD. If you think the guy running things is in over his head, you don't join him no mater how good you are. Another thing to consider is money. If your a top DC, coming into the situation here at UT I doubt your going to get a huge pay increase. Is it worth the move, relocation, and all that comes with it?

Alot of coaches would not want to uproot their families and relocate to a place they may not be a part of 300 days from now.

Because TN has not won a BCS bowl game since 98, the state of the program is a train wreck. Most "big" name coaches see the work needed here to win and win big and often, it scares them (my opinion). Why come here when I can sit on my ass in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Texas and pick and pluck the best recruits year after year. If they do come it's gonna take a lot of $$ to make it happen and more work than they are willing to do.
