No General Belisarius for Tennessee in 2010

In the year 559 A.D. the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire recalled the great military leader, Belisarius, back to Constantinople to prevent it from being sacked by the Slav. and allies.

In 1977 the University of Tennessee called Johnny Majors home after he won a national championship at Pitt. Bill Battle had left the football program with little talent and going downward. I remember the enthusiasm of that hire with "When Johnny comes marching home" being play ad nauseum on the radio outlets. It took several years, but he did in fact turn the program around.

No Belisariuses or Majors were available this year. The closest being an ex graduate assistant (Jon Gruden) who didn't want to even interview for the job. That said, hopefully, true UT fans will be patient with Coach Derek Dooley. The football is in about the same shape as the 1977 program was.

He does not have the Resume', but we don't really know what he can do yet...And I think our current talent level is far above where it was when Majors got here...Majors pulled in a bunch of running backs because he was famous for his Heisman trophy winner, but we needed linemen...Same is true now, so I hope we do finish with a bunch of linemen this year.

I am not sure where you got your information but according to what he told Mike and Mike in the morning show he had interest but must not have been contacted
..... Sorry I can't seem to locate the exact quote but he said something to the effect that "He loveTennessee and wold never totally ruling out coaching in college again" I know when I read that "I believe on Rocky top talk" it made me think he was never contacted ?????

seeing we are talking Johnny Majors / Bill Battle history, just thought i would remind you ........ Back then Our football team had had recent success, we were on the way to the top, our coach was dynamic and had things going for him when all of a sudden he bolted for another team to take his dream job. We were in shock, so what did we do, we went after a young unproven coach who everyone said was a real gentleman but had been coaching under the great coach at Alabama so we knew he had a good pedigree and would keep it rolling. Sound familure.... the coach who left us was Doug Dickey, and the coach we hired was Bill Battle and he was a disciple of Bear Bryants....... That is what makes me scared.....TIFWIW

While Battle had played and had experience with Alabama, he was coaching at Tennessee when he was made HC. When Dickey left for Fla, there was a split between two of the coaches. Instead of losing coaches and players, the AD gave the job to the third choice, wr coach Bill Battle. Although a promising and well liked coach, Battle had never been a head coach or even a coordinator. Much different level of experience than Dooley.

The invaders were Huns, not Slavs.

The resume? Before Saban went to LSU, he did not have that good of a W/L record at Michigan St.

I listened to that interview. Other than him saying he felt bad for Tennessee and that we would always have special memories for him, I don't recall anything saying he or would not talk about the job.

I did not hear the interview, but read a quote from it(or it was said to be) and what I read just left me with the feeling that he had not been contacted about the position at Tennessee and this was after many reports had came out that he had turned us down or that he was just not interested... guess we will never know for sure......thanks for the input
