No Fuente (Thanks Goodness)

Lol. I will give you this, you are the nicest disagreeing person I have met on here. I think we will continue to disagree on Les. I'd rather have him for 5-8 years and get 9-3/10-2 regular seasons with the occasional trip to Atlanta every 2-3 years than risk another mid major type with only 1-2 years of head coaching experience.

Quick question, who are the 2-3 coaches you want here?

i keep going back and forth on who...i know i don't want Miles, Kelly, Gruden, Durkin, Petrino, Martin.

the guys that i'm thinking about to varying degrees...Fuente, Mullen, Frost, Brohm, Strong, Venebles

i gave some opinions on each in DG's thread of candidates. each has good points, and some bad.

but Mullen, Frost and Fuente would probably be my top 3 right now, in no particular order. of course, it could change by the end of the day. and i don't really think Fuente is leaving VT in the end.

if there was one home run hire that i'd get behind no matter what it'd be Bob Stoops. if you want to give a blank check to someone, it'd be him. he's not coming here though, i do think he's done coaching. but he's got just about everything you could want...multiple conf titles, draft picks on the roster, a national title, multiple national title game appearances, heisman trophy winners....and he could coach another 15 years if he wanted to.

I am not anti Frost. However, I am reserving judgement until the Strong vs Frost Playoff game on 11/24 happens. I really think Strong would be a steal for us if he winds up at 12-0 and in a NY6 bowl.

Because of his buyout with Texas, we could get him on the cheap for 2018 (I laid out his current contract setup to accommodate his Texas buyout in this thread) and really fork out money for his assistant coaches. Only concern with Strong is his previous OC hires.

just depends on what STrong really wants. USF isn't a bad spot. but the winner of that game stands a good chance at getting to NY6 bowl, and either coach will be a fairly hot commodity. their Uconn game got rescheduled, but Umass got cancelled, so they'll be a game shy on the schedule.

UCF has also had a couple games cancelled, including GT, which could have gone a long way in determining how good they might be. even saying that though, UCF's schedule is better than USF's with wins over MD, Memphis and Navy.

should be a pretty intriguing game....i'll probably watch.

Les Miles with Hugh Freeze as OC gives Tennessee 3 natties in 3 years.

Freeze isn’t getting a show cause for rub downs. Would be a very good playcaller.

You’re literally asking Tennessee to get in trouble by the NCAA.

Freeze isn’t getting a coaching gig anytime soon, deservingly so.

The Ole Miss crap was very serious.

You’d have to be an complete dumb ass to even consider bringing Freeze here.

Hogwash. We hired Dooley so he could go to Indy and get us out of NCAA Troubles. Hire Les and let him talk to NCAA about how Freeze was a boy at heart and that Les is taking him under his wing to mentor him.

Winner Winner.

I went to church with Fuente in Memphis and talked to him many times at athletic and booster events. Money is not his motivating factor - fit for his family and long term viability at a job is what drives him. His agent, Jimmy Sexton, will probably use you guys for a raise and Fuente will stay in Blacksburg and raise his family until either the Notre Dame job comes open or some other unforeseen set of circumstances occurs.

He is a smart guy and probably knows that a path to the big time is easier at VTech as are expectations.

Remember he comes from the Gary Patterson coaching tree.
