I don’t post on here a lot....I kept my mouth shut after ETSU and UTEP. I knew this blowout was coming, I just hoped I was wrong and the Vols had something in the old tank that we didn’t see in the first 3 games. Listen, I am not one of these folks that runs their mouth about things that I know nothing about....I’ve played every sport under the sun just about....from 7 years old on up through college. I’m 40 now. I’ve also watched a lot of UT football....from the time I was 5 years old. Back to the thread title....there is NO EXCUSE for the product that was put out on the field last night. No drive, no intensity, no fire....whatsoever. I’m prob gonna catch flack for this but look at App state and Troy.....they are teams full of 2 and 3 star players at most. But they can go out there and play with the big boys and win....if they don’t win you can dang sure bet they will give the other team absolute hell. Why? Because they have that fire and they play every snap. That’s coaching. Why we didn’t give the head coaches of these 2 schools at least a look when we were searching for a coach is beyond me. I am not calling for Pruitt’s job....not one bit. He inherited a sh@t show for sure. But one thing I expected from him as a coach is for this team to at least compete and play with a chip on their shoulder. It’s going to take time and I get that, but this is an experiment. And I really didn’t think now was the time to hire an experiment. He’s never been a head coach. I like the guy....I really do. Is he gonna be the one to turn this around? Who knows at this point. I love my Vols.....I bleed orange....and I will never pull for another team. This is just completely frustrating to watch. People at work don’t even clown on me anymore....now they just feel sorry for me. I come in after a loss and it’s....man, sorry about the loss. Like I had a death in the family or something.

Pruitt and his staff better get their sh@t together and in a hurry. Butch Jones isn’t coaching this team anymore. There is simply no excuse for not competing at all.

Well put.
There are things you see in well coached teams even when they are losing badly in obviously outmatched games. I HOPE that as Pruitt matures into his head coach position that we will see those things from our Vols.

No excuse? You must not read here much. This place comes up with the same ones every coach we have. Then will tell you how dumb you are for not buying them. Just remenber they have been wrong for 10 years and proclaimed dooley and jones were the second coming then pretended it never happened.

After the coaching search debacle, We had to settle for Pruitt and trust that Fulmer knew what he was doing. So far, it looks like we are going to have to allow Pruitt time to learn how to be a head coach which is a lot different than being a Def. Coordinator for a defense full of 5 star players. This biggest issue I have so far is the lack of fire and intensity we come out with in the first quarter of every game so far. Pruitt seems to have a lot of fire but it is not carrying over to his team. Hopefully he can chance the Champions of Life culture left behind by the previous coach where everyone got a ring or trophy.

To add offense is miles away defense is a lot closer and have improved over last season. Offense needs to start over might be good if someone besides Helton was leading the way.

I watched several games this weekend. I did not see any other team as ill prepared. Even the huge underdogs fought a little before they cracked. I am surprised we made the run thru the T without a mistake.

I definitely feel your pain but you’re missing the “excuse” if you want to call it that. I prefer to call it reasonable logic.
The coaches you’re referring to did NOT compete at a high level in their 1st year with those programs. They had their systems in place and got the best from those “low star” players after they learned AND bought into the system.
When a house burns down you have to rip up the foundation and start from scratch. Our UT house burned down last year and I hope the current staff knows how to build a solid foundation for the rebuild. It will only take about 2 years to know. Not 3, 4, 5 like many are spewing on here.
I did not burn my Orange this morning, did not remove my license plates or pull decals from almost everything I own. I put on my Power T Orange polo today and will wear it to the links this afternoon.
Not trying to pump sunshine because it IS butt-ugly right now. Just a VFL hoping for better years ahead. Play for the future coach!

hard for me to put it all on the staff...they don't play and they didn't commit all the turnovers, dropped balls, etc,...lots of work to do and it's gonna take a while, but as always...

GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree, they can show them how it should be done it's the players job to execute and they aren't doing that. I keep seeing the unprepared comment and makes no sense I'm, Plus these coaches have forgotten more about coaching then we'll ever know. Pruitt and Co will get it going in due time, unfortunately for some it'll take longer than 9 months and 4 games and they can't handle that

Your argument is with Yourself. You describe the issues, the problems and the crap that has affected this program for the last decade. THEN you jump on Pruitt as if he caused it. He is merely attempting to right it...…………..and it WILL NOT happen quickly. Get over it. Either be a Vol Fan or move on.

If you think things are going to get fixed quickly then you are in for a rude awakening. This is easily one of the worst P5 teams there is. But I guess if Pruitt doesnt fix everything quickly he isnt the guy. So lets go ahead get his and his coaches buyout ready, fire them all and start over again. I mean that would only be what, our 6th coach in 10 years? Yeah, lets just keep doing that because clearly that works best.

Here is an excuse. Florida is a lot better than any of us hoped. They may be the third best in the east. Kentucky I believe is for real and second best in the east. We could have won without the turn overs. I never saw this team quit. I think they are just not there yet.

There is not one game this year where this team came out and looked prepared, not even against the cupcakes. This offense especially is consistently unprepared. They aren't getting manhandled they are missing assignments for the most part. That is a coaching issue. The offensive staff thus far has failed to get these players ready to play. It is that simple and it's very evident.

I really think the poison pill got swallowed back when CBJ's team began really underachieving the fans, pollsters and players expectations and he somehow went full metal salesman to keep his job because he knew or should have known he'd lost control of any semblance of a winning mindset of the players and wouldn't get it back, the 2016 season being the turning point. Of course, a lot of things happened up to that point that were the admins doing that led to that, but a lot of players on this squad were there when that happened and it will take a miracle to deprogram this out of them

I don't entirely disagree but I see improvement. I know there has to be assignments being missed for the opposing defenses just to run free at the qb. But I have seen flashes of solid blocking.

Correct there isn’t and it’s going to be hard to sell to recruits when you haven’t shown any real improvement. You can lose and attract recruits if you show signs of greatness but we look worse than last year in nearly every facet

Well since you've played thru college and therefore obviously "know", then please enlighten everyone how any coach "makes" a person play "with a chip" when they clearly don't want to or do not have it in them to do so??
You're clearly bashing coaches (I'm not bashing nor defending anyone) so I thought I would ask

Everyone seems so absolutely sure of "the problem" and since you claim the problem is simply "make them play harder" then what is the method that should be used to accomplish this?

The problem was the Vols weren't outmatched. They were inept, had 6 turnovers. These players are not that good to begin with. With mediocre coaching they are worse.

You wasted a lot of ink proving yourself delusional.

P.S. Pruitt wasn't UT's first choice either.

Playing with hold over 4-8 talent from last year, can't paint a Picasso with dry paint. It's gonna take a near roster turnover and the time to do it.
