No christmas at ut

Now this is funny. You know what the top rated schools in the country have??? I'll fill you in- they have diverse and inclusive campuses. Know what they don't have? State legislatures that force their religious beliefs on the institutions. Of the top 15 schools in the country, only one is in the south- Vanderbilt. You want UT to increase in rankings, it starts with attracting, wait for it.... DIVERSE student populations who graduate and carry the UT degree forward in successful careers- which increases the reputation of UT. While the state legislature would love to have an all white, straight, and Christian student body- it's the crap they spew that will continue to ensure TN slips further and further down the rankings. Why would any "diverse" student want to attend UT. If cheek doesn't stand up for diversity and inclusion- I will be saddened and ashamed that I am an alum.

Boo freakin' hoo

Thinking like this is what continues to drag American ideals back into the 50s. Diversity is not limited to skin color and inclusion doesn't exclude the Christian faith regardless of how much Fox News and state legislatures cry foul.
The 50's were actually quite good. At least people had jobs, and they weren't a bunch of druggies, and entitled babies that whined constantly and blamed everyone but themselves for their failures. I am guessing that you aren't old enough to remember the 50's. You kids need to grow up!

In before.......but how about the oppressed minorities, you racist, bigoted, homophobic whitey of the 50's?

There's at least three threads on this subject, so this one will just have to suffice. This is the last I'll say on this matter.

The memo was ill-advised in my opinion, but not for the reasons those offended most likely claim. It was ill-advised because, much like Yale's memo on Halloween customs, it treats students, staff, and faculty alike like a bunch of stunted children, incapable of figuring things out on their own and interacting with one another reasonably.

I also think that some of the wording of the document was very poor, particularly the part about a "Christmas party in disguise," which, bizarrely enough, just sounds insidious on their part.

In no shape or form does any of the above warrant the overreaction of those claiming offense from the document. You're merely reacting emotionally and are not thinking this through rationally. "But the PC crowd is taking our rights..." yada, yada, yada. Just stop and think this one out. It's not a mandate; it's not a law. It cannot and will never be a policy of the University of Tennessee to ban Christmas parties, as this would be a violation of the Constitution.

So, while we may agree that the document was inappropriate in several ways, it does not warrant a chancellor's resignation, nor does it warrant de-funding or other asinine threats. What it does warrant is for you and me to start thinking things through rationally and objectively more often, with a free and open-mind, so that we can hopefully avoid obnoxious administrators/authorities from thinking they have to continue to treat us like children in the future.

Exactly. Why even produce the document. On the other side I believe Jimmy needs to go. Does he really have time to bother with silly crap like this. It just seems he should have more important issues to deal with

You are 100% correct.

It's not correct because he failed to mention that Duke University is also included in the top 15. You know what Duke has going for it? It has an affiliation with the Methodist Church.

Students go to chapel at Duke? Harvard? Yale? Brown? Dartmouth? No? Cause they all started with an affiliation with some strand of Christianity.

Christmas and any Christian holidays are being attacked. Blame it on the current administration! Atheist are attacking anything to do with Christianity as well are Muslims. It's time we stand up against these people!

I'm sure he survives just fine. And I guarantee you he has a larger set on him than a condescending candy azz like yourself. Sorry, that someone has something to believe in pisses you off. I'm guessing even though you fake it on here, you're life is pretty empty. Otherwise you wouldn't behave the way you do on here. All I see is an insecure little boy. Maybe instead of trivializing others beliefs and then babbling about respect for something you see as important. You should offer that same respect. If not your a hypocrite just making noise. And that's a waste of time for anyone to listen to.

The asshurt is strong with this one.

Judging by the post time, I wager that you had blown through a case of Busch and the tears were rolling.

Exactly. These Universities were founded by Christians and having Christmas parties shouldn't be offensive to anyone attending these places. It also goes to show that these places that were majorly influenced by Christianity are incredibly diverse.

I got this from TOS. Send your Christmas Cards to:

Cheek fighting the battle against secret Santa is standing up for diversity... I consider Christmas, Halloween, thanksgiving, 4th of July, Labor Day, Memorial Day, MLK day and any of the others to be American traditions and customs.... If I move to Japan I expect that country to celebrate in ways that I may not be 100%!on board but I'm fine with that.... People need to grow up.... The world has gone nuts and turned into pampered babies.

Yeah... But how about all that?
I think that the true measure of success in life is your level of happiness. Having lived through the entire 50's and 60's, there is no way that I believe the general population's happiness has increased.

Were black people terribly unhappy then? Some were I'm sure, but the kids had a father in the home who worked, and a devoted mother not on drugs. A street gang didn't take the place of their family. One thing for sure is that it doesn't appear that they are that happy now. Happy folks don't shoot each other, burn stuff, riot,
and whine constantly.

Were the gays terribly unhappy then? Some were I'm sure, but a lot aren't terribly happy now either. They are self loathing liberals. Happy people don't whine constantly, and try to get people fired or businesses shut down.

So, before you condemn an era, it would help if you had done more than read about it in a book. People in the 50's and up to Vietnam era went to work, had a sense of self worth, didn't stay stoned or drugged, and didn't expect to walk to the mailbox to pick up their check. You are a smart guy, but not old enough to have an opinion about the years before you were born.

I know nothing about the Great Depression other than what I have read. in a book. I know nothing about the Roaring 20's , other than what I have read. I wouldn't pretend to pass judgment on people who lived then because I was not around. Feel free to tell me what it was like in 2010 or something.

This is putting it mildly

Why should anyone give a crap if someone has a Xmas party? If it offends, then don't go..., problem solved.

If you're an atheist you don't believe so go and get trashed if you want... Big deal

If you're a Muslim..... Screw you 😜

Why are people so reticent to make others with differing views, upbringings, cultures etc feel welcome?
People tend to congregate with like minded people. Have you ever been to a large Thanksgiving or Christmas gathering ? There is a group of men over here talking, and a group of women over there, and a group of kids somewhere else.

Just the way that it is.

I would say that most Christians attending Christmas parties would be very welcoming to people of any other religions, if those people wanted to attend and if they planned to be respectful of Christmas. Christians basically set aside the month of December to celebrate the birth of Christ. We don't tell any other group/religion that they can't celebrate whatever they want.

You can have gatherings celebrating anything. You can have a Dale Jr. party and invite all the Muslims, Hindus, Chinese, Buddhists, Protestants, Catholics, atheists, agnostics, not sures, etc. that you want.

I don't think cancelling secret Santa helps people feel welcome.... Do they get rid of their customs and traditions in other countries to make others welcome... IMO people from other countries or differing views should be made to feel welcome to come join in our traditions and customs while also free to celebrate in any manner they wish.
