Iirc, it was the guy under Lawson that was promoted. Maybe he technically was not promoted, but I thought he took over his responsibilities anyways. I justremember the players talking about how they like they work by position group rather than team.
I remember that because I posted it was dumb to have them train as team rather than by positon because you would not train a DT the way you would a DB.

No one was ever promoted. The position was left open after Butch parted ways with Lawson because of how big his salary was that was still owed. No one had to leave before Rock was hired, Lawson's contract had to expire.

With Martinez, they tried to delay news of the hire of his replacement until he found another job, but it got to the point where they had to make a move or the new coach from UNC was going to take a different job.

no. we spent almost 2 million on him in 4 years if he gets this included. IMO, not money well spent

That is not really the question though. Given that UT will more than likely be on the hook for a good portion of the money per the contract - is the new hire worth what they are paying him + this?

Anyone think that it is odd they have not announced a coach being let go before hiring his replacement (strength coach and now DB coach)?

I wonder why Butch is handling it this way... recruiting?

Had Debord not accepted the Indiana job, we might not have heard he was leaving until Butch made a decision on who to hire/promote. Consider how much buzz there has been for the OC spot since the news broke. It is alot easier to do interviews when nobody knows they are happening.

Recruiting is part of it, but making changes with less media coverage has it's own advantages.

Because there is way too much info leaking out and it has been totally out of control. Pretty hard to hire and fire people the right way if the entire fanbase is screaming about it. By keeping it quiet, he could let Martinez know that he wasn't being retained, help him however he wants, and negotiate properly with his replacement. So far, based on the reaction to the new DB coach, he is doing it right.

Wasn't Martinez contract up? So he wasn't fired or rehired. I can see no announcement for that.

i saw something online saying we still had to pay him something, so i would guess he still had a year or more...maybe just bonus money....didn't read the article

Call me cynical, but I do believe Martinez's firing was intentionally kept very low key. Anybody's guess as to why. All I saw at first was news that we had hired a new "DB coach." Had to dig a little and the two stories I read about this guy quoted the same thing about Martinez...that he would "not be returning."

I headed to UTsports.com and there's the press release, including a fond farewell to Martinez from Butch.

This was an anti-splash replacement coaching change designed to fly low and avoid the radar.

What I would really like to know: is Warren Shoop's hire or Butch's? Did Shoop personally identify and recruit Warren himself? I want Shoop to have the coaches he wants, period, end of story.

And did Shoop make an offer to bring in Terry Smith from Penn State? Why or why not? If so, does he think Warren is better?

Many of us now have two of the four coaching changes we wanted...a new OC (TBD) and a new secondary coach.

Is Mahoney next? And what about Azzanni?

They didnt let anyone on the S&C staff go.

It was odd, but since Martinez is out of contract, they technically don't have to fire him.

I think the Azzanni thing will be up to Butch and the new OC. I can see Mahoney not being retained as well and Wells sliding in to that role.

Martinez is under contract till 2018, we fired him, and we owe him his money unless he finds a job of equal compensation

So $500k for the new guy and $450k to get rid of the old guy. That's $950k.

Is this the going rate to teach 18-20yo athletes how to turn their heads around? We live in interesting times.
