an opinion is I don't like how this band sounds or I really like this band's sound.

Overrated/Underrated is different. If so many bands point to PJ as a musical influence and they're still selling records and venues out at such a solid pace, you can't say "overrated". Everything about them proves they are one of, if not the biggest American band in the past 20 years.

Wouldnt being overrated mean that everyone gives them too much credit and overrates how great they are, hence selling so many albums/ shows etc?

In my opinion, PJ sounds okay AND they are overrated.

What have I got myself into in this "Nirvana thread" lol

Cobain killing himself had much to do with their legacy, more so than their music. Ever hear him live? Sounds like a cat being strangled. I say all this and I like them, they were an ok band.

Could not disagree more. The night I saw them live, he was on fire. They were very good and dynamic.

Think his voice and punk rock ethics/ great pop sensibilities are what made them influential.

You could have both. The two did not have to be seperated.

As long as you have passion. Pick up a guitar and play.

Like Neil Young's album title ask's, "Are You Passionate?"

if a person doesn't like a band despite their success and critical acclaim they still have a right to say "overrated" IMO and vice versa with "underrated". those terms while tied to a single person's opinion is just that.....an opinion.

He did not have a good voice, hie lyrics were mostly incoherent rambling and his guitar riffs were elementary at best.

What Nirvana had, was like you said, great pop sensibility and being in the right place at the right time.

On the Pearl Jam discussion, heard they got their own channel on satellite radio, along side the Boss, and the Dead.

No mtater what you think, both bands were established before Nirvana became Nirvana.

And neihter of those bands have a sound that is even remotely close to Nirvana.

They did not create the "grunge" sound, not even close.

You havent listened to many interviews with these bands if you believe that, becaus they have said on numerous occasions they were heavily influenced by each others music. For example, the song "Would" by AIC, one of their best IMO, was a tribute to a influential lead singer of another band in Seattle who died from a drug overdose.

The whole Seattle music scene/grunge was a results of all these bands being in the same city, playing the same places and influencing each other before they became big. You think it was a coincidence these bands happened to be in the same city, Seatle?

I say somewhere in between but I find Nirvana much more "real" and entertaining than Pearl Jam. Not even close for me.

didn't realize until a read this thread that a person's opininon of what is overrated and not overrated could be classified as right and wrong, when there is no set right or wrong when it comes to musical taste. rathar it's just a person's opinion.

just sayin'

You are wrong.

Nirvana is probably the greatest band of the 90's. At least top 3. Pearl Jam never had me, so I really do not see what you guys like about them.

lol @ you. i never said i was an avid fan of pearl jam. i like some of their music, but never have listened to a ton of their stuff. and i'm a big fan of nirvana......i agree that they're one of the best bands of the 90's. i just said that i think they're somewhere between "overrated" and "rightful place." actually read the post before you start making assumptions.

I was making a joke man. Hence the "you are wrong", which was related to your statement of opinions can not be wrong, they are opinions. Then I also went ahead and hit enter 15 times so my post was like yours. My sense of humor is bad. I am sorry.

Everyone should own a copy of Slanted and Enchanted.

Not sure why but this is my fave from Pavement (I have it on Westing by Musket and Sextant

YouTube - Pavement- Box Elder

great song. Slanted is awesome. My fav is either crooked rain crooked rain, or Wowee Zowee. had the pleasure of seeing Pavement and White Stripes on same bill.

missed the reunion. Tragically underrated during 90s.

Overrated after Kurt's death... but maybe underrated before??

Good band, but not near as ground-breaking and/or glorified as they should have been after Kurt's death...

I still bought their albums and enjoyed the music though.

Nirvana Unplugged might be in my top 5 albums ever....

nirvana was great, but Pavement is the best band of the 90s. (American)

That is one helluva great album. They just slipped thru the cracks on the whole MTV (when they were MusicTV) thing. I think alot of the bands back then knew that Pavement were just about the best thing going.

Nirvana is vastly overrated. Their music and riffs were simplistic, the vocals weren't very good and the lyrics were the ramblings of a drug addict that weren't creative or "brilliant" at all.

That's just my take, though. Never had a taste for the grunge movement...

Before Nirvana hit there was Headbanger's Ball. After "Nevermind" there was 120 Minutes.

If you dont know what all that means, you don't really get what music was like back for us growing up. They changed it all. Alot of things happened since and before.

You just dont know what it meant to get rid of all that hair band crap and get real bands playing on TV for two hours every Sunday night. It was an event.

I am rambling like Lester Bangs now!
