2016 Preseason All SEC Teams as voted by media

A day after being named the favorite to win the SEC East, Tennessee placed nine players on the three preseason All-SEC teams including three defenders on the first team.

Junior defensive end Derek Barnett, senior linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin and senior cornerback Cameron Sutton were all named to the first team defense.

Senior quarterback Joshua Dobbs and junior running back Jalen Hurd were named to the second-team offense, and guard Jashon Robertson was named to the third team.

Junior Evan Berry was named a second-team All-SEC return specialist, and redshirt junior running back Alvin Kamara was named a second-team all-purpose player.

Redshirt junior punter Trevor Daniel was named to the third team.
Berry as 2nd team return specialist? What a joke.

Yeah really. Lol at naming an All-American kick returner 2nd team All Conference. And there aren't 2 punters better than Trevor Daniel.
It is ridiculous, but glad so many guys were recognized. I think there may be a couple more who could end up as All-SEC by the end of the year too.

From the article:
Berry was a first-team All-American last season, leading the nation in kick returning with 38.3 yards per return. He finished with 804 yards and three touchdowns on 21 returns.

Evan Berry being on the second team is utter nonsense. Same for Daniel being 3rd team punter.

So Berry is First Team All-American after his Sophomore year and preseason second team All-SEC before his Junior year? That makes sense.

DKjr, TKJ not being on there is a joke. Berry not being first team is crazy and Daniel should be second team at the very worst. Weisman and Thomas not being on there anywhere is surprising

It's all about team.

Team starts winning championships, and the individual recognition will flow heavily. Until then, we'll have guys (like Berry and Daniels, Kirkland and TKJr) who are undervalued or overlooked.

That would be a good argument if TAMU had actually ever won herein the SEC beside 2 years of Manziel. And they still won no championships. How Kirk gets specialist of the year preseason and compare Berry's stats is unreal

Not that I really care but actually votes for this nonsense? Is this all media votes? Do they ever have to explain their votes, because this almost looks like a media troll job on Vol fans.

Kirk had 0 td's on kickoffs. Berry had 3 kick return td's and averaged nearly 9 yards more per try. Kirk was also named first team punt returner. Unreal.

Also, Florida's offensive line finished last season as bottom ten groups in nation statistically...yet they have 3 on 2nd All-SEC team and we have 1 on 3rd team.

I suppose Superman, who flies at mach 4, was the first team choice. Unbelievable!

No, it was actually Christian Kirk. He's pretty good, but not deserving of 1st team WR, 1st team return specialist AND 1st team all-purpose player.

Some observations...

Dobbs and Kelly were really close in the voting (321 to 313). Then it falls off a cliff to 3rd team QB Brandon Harris with 25 votes. Wow! And speaking of which, if Brandon Harris is really the 3rd best QB in the SEC, they probably should have just had 1st and 2nd team QBs this year.

They are clearly penalizing Evan Berry for not returning punts. His Kick Return avg is 19 yards/return higher than Kirk's, and had 3 TD's compared to Kirk's 0. However, Kirk returned 14 punts for an avg of 24.4 yards and 2 TD's. That's really good punt return stats, even better than Sutton's. I would go with Berry though as 1st team considering that in the category in which you can compare them was won by a country mile by Berry.

I'm not sure I have the appropriate data to compare the punters. It's more than just straight avg that should be used. You need to factor in hang time, punts downed inside the 10, net yardage including the return, etc. I haven't looked all that up.

Whether or not we agree (we won't) with where Vol players landed (or didn't land) on these preseason teams, it's obvious that our talent far exceeds where we've been in a long time.
