Nine programs that won a national title but never will again

I think Georgia could have been on that list. Yeah, they're really good now, but their ordained role in the football universe is the Squanderer of Opportunity. The better they are, the bigger the heartbreak.

I know, I know, many would say that that title actually belongs to Richt more than Georgia, but I don't think Richt has lost control of that team yet.

Tennessee is a school where with the right coach, we're back in the hunt within a few years of said hire.

Saying Tennessee will never win a NC would require the whole state to to stop caring about football and that will NEVER happen.

Georgia always had the recruiting edge over TN. I won't say they "always" will, but I think the sport itself would have to fundamentally change in terms of what makes a recruit 5-star to make TN a hotbed of talent (as in no more tackling, no more need for linemen, etc.). Georgia's number is going to come up one of these years. I think we had ours in 1998.

UGA will always have the recruiting advantage over UT because it is such a talent rich state. It has still been 38 years since they won it all which is truly hard to imagine.

This is why I'm falling out of love with college football. I remember how exciting it was to win the SEC or go to the sugar bowl. Now, it's all or nothing. I doubt SC fans ever thought they'd win a NC, but I imagine they were ecstatic with their success under Spurrier. Can we enjoy less?

Don't fall out of love w CFB. Fall out of love with the for-profit media. 99% of everything I despise is rooted in their "voice". This dung piece of an article is a pretty good example.

Catbone now writes for the Spun

Ha ha! I love it. Truth is any one of those programs could win it again. If they get the right people and the right support, they are capable. The key for any of them is getting the wrong people and wrong support outta the way.

And I think that is what the writer is depending on; Getting those who don't have the good common sense to get outta the way is easier said than done. Here is hoping Tennessee manages to prove him wrong, and those who have been a stumbling block for the Vols focus on promoting the next Taylor Swift album.

Tennessee has more money, facilities, tradition, fans than all the other teams on that list combined. Embarrassing For the guy that wrote it

I'm betting this writer will regret having included Tennessee on the list within the next 5 years.

Not that we'll win a national championship in that time. Only that we'll be competing for the SEC and a potential berth in the playoffs by then. His prediction will look silly long before it is disproved.

I agree. I'm thinking we could be "in the hunt" by year 3 of the Pruitt tenure

I agree with you. College football with a few real bowl games was far better than "the big one" and a pathetic plethora of consolation games. NASCAR killed NASCAR over the same principle - cheapened the individual races - winning races was the big thing with the old guys - points and championships were secondary. But it's just what promoters do; they "promote" something good right into extinction.

I think he will get us back in championship form again. I'm just hoping he doesn't leave us to go back bama if Saban decides to walk away. I know he still needs to prove himself at Tennessee. Just saying...

I think the glass is half full here. Because of our schedule and our conference reputation we have a better chance to get into the playoffs if we do our job. I'd rather be in our position with a clear cut mission, than UCF or Boise State who's outcome is still in question after a perfect season.

Never is a long time.

Never IS a long time but that UT will never win another championship is the undeniable opinion of the majority of analysts.

My opinion is that UT will not win one sooner than when Dabo Sweeney retires from being Head Coach at Alabama. That could easily be 25 years.

Tennessee will win another NC in 2022.

I would agree but for one problem.

Problem: If Pruitt doesn't win a National Championship within the next 3 years, he'll be fired at the demand of this fan base leaving us with a new coach in 2022 and thereby making a National Championship in 2022 impossible.

This whole list is stupid and short-sighted. Tennessee is the most absurd entry on it, since we routinely recruit inside the top 10, and have more resources than any other team in the country. But even beyond that, the college football landscape is constantly evolving and teams that were superpowers in one decade, become duds in another, and vice-verse.

Maryland has access to some of the best talent in the nation. They are bankrolled by Under Armour. Do I think they'll become a superpower soon? No. But over the next 50 years, there's no reason they couldn't win a national title at some point if they find the right coach.

If this list were written 13 years ago, the author would've put Alabama on it, but not Tennessee. If this list were written in 1999, the author would've put Georgia on it. College football is very cyclical.

If it were not for the fact that our in state talent is continuing to get better and better, I'd agree with this. But, talent is getting better every year and that along with the other obvious reasons gives me the evidence to think that we will win another..... Somewhere along the way

Saban is going to retire eventually and winning the SEC almost always puts a school on the short list of national title contenders.

It was also idiotic of the author to cite UGA and FL as obstacles to the Vols winning a title too.

Of course UT has to beat them but they both just went through their own coaching changes.
