NIL Facts So Far

Just heard that a walk-on at Kansas just got NIL with Appleby's . 5'9" fullback.

KU Walk-On Fullback Gets NIL Deal With Applebee's

If he had that football, is their any restriction as to how much he could sell it for? I would think there is some mega-booster in Jayhawk land that would pay significantly to have that ball on their desk.

Or, does Applebee’s have the ball? LOL

The scholarship numbers are the result of Title IX. That's not gonna change and the powers that be are not gonna give away their cash reserves. The NIL is to help the kids who can move the needle---not the average athlete.
Numbers yes, what is offered on scholarship no. Tony V said it best, he has a hard time recruiting a kid and then saying by the way we want you to cover 25K

Also, most people seem to have a distorted understanding of what can legally be done. My understanding is that a legal NIL deal cannot be conditioned upon a player committing to or remaining with a school and must be "market value". While "market value" is an admittedly ambiguous concept anyone familiar with the regulation of certain industries like health care knows that the ambiguity of the term has never stopped the regulators from prosecuting alleged violations of the concept.
That market value can be danced around. We need pilot oil or dish network to hand out some cursory ā€œmarketingā€ positions to our boys

Too many athletes and families thought this was going to take off. Market value for most players in any sport is not close to what they dreamed it would be. Take the scholarship, play until you graduate and walk out of school debt free. If you want to maximize the playing field turn all sports into free rides. Baseball, softball and other non-revenue sports don't get the same scholarship number as football and basketball but produce on the field on par or better than those revenue producing sports.
Interesting to think about NIL and the less popular sports. A player might break through every now and then: imagine someone like Monica Abbott under NIL; could probably have gotten a deal to rival any of the football players.

Interesting indeed. Monica, Candace, Holdsclaw would not get Manning/Berry NIL endorsement money but should they get less than say a Dobbs or Lofton/Grant Williams/Admiral?

I would think to even things out a cap needs to be set. To think NIL isn't used in recruiting is ridiculous.

Me as well. Obvious hypothetical but this scenario will happen and create a problem of equality. Or how long before cheerleaders, dance team, mascots and band want in on profits?
If I was a good left tackle, I’d have a little conversation with my QB about getting a cut of his NIL or his head better be on a swivel when that DE comes around the corner. I might just have to fan on a block here and there.

NIL is an agents dream and compliance office nightmare…

Why of course it’s not an inducement to sign with a school. Wink, wink. I am certain those two big NIL deals didn’t induce those two 5 star basketball recruits to sign with Memphis at the last minute. Old saying: ā€œDon’t pee on my head and try to convince me it’s raining.ā€

It’ll be interesting to see whether any effective regulatory authority develops. Just looks like a free-for-all sh*tshow at present.

$35 median!? šŸ˜‚

Yes, that is the most telling number in the stats, and unfortunately, many may not see the significance.

When the average of a set of numbers is greater than the median by a factor of more than 13x, it is telling you that there were VERY few players that got a significant amount of money, and almost all of them got essentially nothing. But, I think that was to be expected.
