not all native americans have a problem with the redskins. its all in how butt hurt and politcal you wanna be about it. would you want the braves to change their name? some native americans want all the team names changed. how would you feel about that?

If you don't see how "Redskins" is offensive in a fundamentally different way than "Braves" is not, then I don't know that any further discussion is possible. There's nothing wrong with "Cleveland Indians," other than the horrific blackface caricature they use as a mascot. Are black people being "butthurt" about it when they object to being called niggers and seeing white people dressing up in blackface and making fun of them?

There's marginal, PC-sort of cases and then there's naked freaking rudeness. The Atlanta Braves had some stuff that was right on the line, and they did the right thing 20 years ago and got rid of it. The Cleveland Indians and the Washington Gooks haven't caught up yet.

ha ha you changed it. priceless

I believe in variety. I had gone with the Washington Niggers and the Washington Coons, so I thought I'd go with something else. It's all the same thing. You could put a guy in a sombrero on your team's helmet and call them the Washington Wetbacks. At least it would have the value of alliteration.

I am using them to hammer home a point. You are going to stand up there on Sunday and yell one unabashedly.

Yet the Redskins very team name is racist.

And redfox, there's nothing wrong with the fact that you choose to root for a particular team. Just saying that particular team's moniker is, by definition in the Oxford Dictionary, a derogatory term for native Americans. It literally is the moral equivalent of having a team called "the n***ers.

Do you really think your point is that hard to understand that you need to stoop lower by insulting other races?

this! I know what he was trying to say and what points he was trying to make. but he went about it totally wrong numerous times. he doesnt like the name, but yet he is no better.

This. I understand he's trying to make a point, but he could use different examples instead of dropping racist words.

Why? They are the functional equivalent of "Redskins." "Redskins" is a racist word. If one is OK then so are the others. They are words that belong in this discussion. They are just words and weren't used to insult anyone other than the fact that they are, by their very nature, extremely insulting.

The words are just fine in an academic style comparison. Do they shock and offend you to the point that you wish they weren't used? Exactly... Explain why it was wrong.

Some do, some don't. In cases involving reference to a specific Indian nation (Sioux, Seminole, Chippewa, etc), I'd argue that it should be left up to those who are being directly referenced. Miami University, which is in itself basically named after the Miami tribe, used to be known as the Indians until the Miami asked for that to be changed (which is why it's now RedHawks). The Seminole and Chippewa are fine with their particular arrangement, and two of three Sioux tribes are not. Thank the doddering racist Ralph Englestad for ensuring that the U of North Dakota is basically painted into a corner on that one.

Personally, I would have no objection if a group of stereotypical tribesmen went around scalping anyone who used the term "butthurt" in an online forum though.

Like it was said earlier, there is no need to use words like that to put down another race in order to try and make a point that everyone already gets.

I thought they were the Miami Redskins.

It's not a hard concept. If it needs explained then you're worse off than what I thought.
