Part of that legacy has always been Lady Vols-only fans who wear different colors, sport different logos, and generally seem to define themselves as fans by aggressively NOT being fans of the men's teams. That's a branding disaster.
I started out sympathetic to those on the pro-Lady Vols side of the debate, but the more posts I see like this one from fans who complain that getting rid of the baby blue trim would be somehow "murdering [Pat Summitt's] legacy," the more I'm convinced that getting rid of the separate Lady Vols branding is the right thing to do.
Well alienating the women's teams by ruining their brand is silly. The women's basketball team has been immensely more successful all time than any men's team. I understand that football is our main sport, but Pat and the women's team has been more consistently successful than our football team ever has. I still go to more football games and buy more football gear than I do the lady vols games, but I enjoy the originality and legacy that the logo and colors hold. We have now taken that originality and blended it into a less identifiable brand by removing that. We have not rebranded the girls teams, we have un-branded them.
As for the boys uniforms, I'm not terribly upset with anything but the checkerboards. It would have been nice to put all the gimmicky stuff on to an alternate (which is what alternates are for) and kept the typical orange and white traditional uniforms simple.
So what we are saying is that Alabama has never worn alternate jerseys?
Ya I'm sure they do. However is a different demographic, and that's all they have. They don't have the tradition, championships, all Americans, NFL players and hall of famers that we have. They also still do not recruit at a high level compared to many of the traditional power houses. It's a gimmick and Tennessee is way better than gimmicks. It is not needed. I am disappointed that jones and the team let this happen.
Holy Christ, am I really the only one that likes the incorporation of our checkerboard?
Both feigned outrage and overexcitement should probably be reserved until tomorrow when we actually get to see them a bit clearer.....JMO
