Nico not at practice today

In the wake of the initial reports, those close to Iamaleava maintain that he's satisfied with his position in Knoxville.

"The family are happy (with Tennessee)," Cordell Landers, a close friend of the Iamaleavas, told CBS Sports. "There are no (contract negotiations), they're happy with the contract they have."

This was before he sat out

Situations like this could eventually turn Tennessee from being a "football school". The things our fans LOVE about basketball and baseball is the TRUE "VFL" mentality. Yes, we have some transfer.....but the ones that fans love.....they stick. They LOVE this place. Players sit and wait their turn under Vitello. Players LOVE Barnes and stay here because of that relationship. And fans WORSHIP them for it. Football is becoming a true cluster and we are starting to see it more and more. Loyalty is all but gone in college sports. It's why ZZ and Mashack stand out and can do no wrong in our fan's eyes for the most part. You can be a legend at TN if you just stay loyal. Or you can be a hired gun and an asterik in our history.

I don't see some programs having as big of a mess of it as Tennessee. I am not hearing this mess at Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State, etc. Some of this is on Tennessee as well. We just can't get out of our own way (at least in Football).

Then why did he skip practice? Those 2 things do NOT add up

This is really simple. Players need multi year contracts with buyout clauses if they want to keave

Can’t be doing this renegotiation stuff every 3 months
I agree. this all seems shockingly simple to fix. every major sport in America has ways of governing this crap that the NCAA can just copy. no need to be original just do the same stuff everyone else does to manage players and contracts.

and the NCAA doesn't have to take the lead, the SEC and B10 can make these changes today and threaten to not participate with teams of other conferences if they don't follow suit

We all know that Heupel can coach QB’s. So after this last season I really have to question any team that is willing to pay him $4mil a season.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong. If he already has a guaranteed deal with another school…would that not automatically entail tampering??
Yes, and thanks to numerous lawsuits (many of which TN or UT were involved in) the NCAA has basically shuttered their enforcement office.

Welcome to the Wild Wild West.

Heupel and Co would be guilty of malpractice if they've not been chatting up various players playing or committed to other schools, that is ... tampering.

You sign a deal you honor it. Hope Tennessee doesn't budge. Not showing up for practice is self centered not the player we need.

Yeah, that's a dumb move to not show up. That will get you **** canned in the league. I'm very disappointed in this. I thought Nico had more class and honor than this - especially after we fought against the NCAA for him. I think he's probably ruined his cred here now.

Ok, if we pay him who is next? This is not a sustainable situation. I thought we have this great leadership, if so why does this keep happening?
Its not sustainable no matter what. This is gonna be the trend with a lot of these guys. Nico isn’t the first. Damn sure won't be the last until contracts are signed to play. Agents are involved and they are greedy.

Don't like for someone to try to hold you hostage over money. He is not exactly on food stamps. He made a deal ok to negotiate it nor act like a baby and not show up for practice. I'm totally ok with moving on from him.

Georgia just had their $4mil QB in January tell them “I’m out”. OSU had a guy take $1mil, play 2 snaps & leave. Clemson is a cult, you got me there.

If Tennessee made any mistake it was not offering a graded payment of $1mil his freshman year, $2mil last year $3 mil this year. While that’s not $4mil it is closer to the market value. Paying $2mil for a freshman benchwarmer wasn’t smart.

The courts have already told the NCAA that their business model is in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act and that only Congress can work this out legally.

Heavy hitters from college were on the Hill in DC trying to get Congress to do that. Congress.... to fix something.

The NCAA can't act like the professional leagues without accepting that players are employees, can unionize, can collective bargain, can have salary caps, etc, etc.

All of that centers on an Antitrust Exemption which the NCAA doesn't have.

If Nico leaves there will be others that leave as well. It could easily be a devastating domino effect.
I could see Matthews. Not sure who else (even him?) that could transfer out and be in contention to start for a school at our level with not joining the team until fall camp.
