Nico not at practice today

I don't think Heupel puts himself in great danger. I think Heupel and every other football program are already in great danger no matter what he does.

if you let Nico walk, som SEC team will scoop him up and beat us over the head with him and simultaneously signal to the country that TN isn't a place good QBs should think about dealing with.

if you negotiate with him and give him what we wants, the next QB will just ask for more.

Without better regulations or collision by the power football programs to all agree to only pay x amount, then the bleeding will continue indefinitely.
Gotta get rules/legislation in place, enforceable contracts that also benefit the University and the programs, players don’t get to be a perpetual free agent or renegotiate on a whim, performance based pay and caps on the value of the contract. Till then, we will continue to this complete s*** show of college football.

It’s all about the mindset. I know there’s more money involved, but keep it at decent amount and it’s gonna work out. A me first player is not what any team needs is the point.
nah, there have been "me first" players since the beginning of football. this is a whole different thing. it's about players easily being able to get their perceived value through a completely unregulated free agent system.

the fact that Nico can sign a 4 year contract but walk away from it without it really hurting him financially is a problem. and someone can sign him without owing UT any compensation is a problem.

all professional sports leagues have rules that govern this kind of stuff. but with the NCAA the fire hydrant was unplugged with nothing attached to it.

Fine by me. Those guys may actually want to be here. These kids have to get the Tom Brady mentality pay me a little less, put good guys around me and I'll look even better.
Unless Merk decides to pull a Gibson and try to grab a bag himself. New day for college ball for sure.

Just heard Jayson Swain say you best prepare for "life after Nico" because there's no coming back from this. I suspect Swain knows a little about it. So, it's time for the Merk and McIntyre show!

Are we sure Merk will be the guy. From what I am hearing Mac has looked pretty good in spring camp. Both 4 stars and similar size. I assume the thought is Merk has had one more year in the system and is more capable of running it day one?

This offseason has been nothing but holdout drama.

When will these conferences finally say enough is enough? I’m tired of reading headlines like this about players who have earned no respect think they should hold out for more money. It’s sickening.

I understand getting paid but this league seriously needs to get contracts and caps in place before this **** actually dies like everyone says it will. No one wants to watch an amateur sport with unlimited salary caps and free agency year round.

No way he comes back from this. Damage is done. Later
Exactly right. Whether he comes back under current terms or with a new, more expensive contract (which ultimately hurts Heupel)….he better be dropping dimes for touchdowns one after the other, at least 30-35 tds. I don’t see him as that capable, hence he will get crucified mercilessly by the fans…and deservedly so. He needs to just be done with it and leave and take his shakedown dad with him.

There are reports of real injury concerns.
Supposedly it’s his shoulder in his throwing arm. I dislocated mine on my off hand in football. It never fully heals the same again. Takes forever to heal it in the muscles and nerves correctly.

what the NCAA needs to do (or the SEC and B10) is end all their eligibility rules and age limits. let players play as many years as they want until they aren't invited back or they go to the NFL. There are tons of guys who were amazing college athletes who couldn't hack it in the NFL. what if those guys were allowed back in the NCAA?

they need to increase the potential pool of high quality athletes so that guys like Nico become a commodity and easily replaceable. that will cut WAY down on the amount of money they can ask for.

Nico doesn't strike me as the brightest bulb on the string but surely he isn't dumb enough to walk away from his deal at UT without a guarantee of something better, likely out West. My question is, has the new school realized what kind of dude they are getting? The dude who will screw you over because his dad says he deserves more money. It's like the guy who marries the woman who was cheating on her husband with him. She did it to him, and she'll do it to you! Caveat Emptor!
