was ranked #15 pro-style QB in the nation of the 2006 draft class...a 3 star prospect....(Sam Bradford was another 3 star prospect ranked #12)...ranked #57 in the nation overall in Rivals' 2006 draft class

The strong-armed sophomore from Flower Mound, Texas, can throw the football a long, long way. Just how long, though, is something that not even Nick Stephens knows.

“The last time I tried to throw (for distance) was my senior year in high school, and I threw it about 74 yards,” he recalled this week. “Don't hold me to that, though, because the last time I tried that was about three years ago.”

Suffice to say, Stephens can throw the ball far enough. If the 6-4, 215-pounder learns to throw it quickly enough and accurately enough, as well, he could beat out junior Jonathan Crompton and redshirt freshman B. J. Coleman to start the Vols' Sept. 1 opener at UCLA.

Because experience is such a valuable commodity at quarterback, most observers assumed Crompton would be listed No. 1 on the spring depth chart, with Stephens No. 2 and Coleman No. 3. Instead, all three are bracketed No. 1.

What does that mean?

“It means exactly what I want it to mean and what it should mean: Everybody has a fair shot,” Stephens said. “Whoever performs, takes care of the ball and leads the team, that's who's going to play. That's what that means.”

Sounds like a leader. Has the arm. But has he grasped the offense? That's his main problem. He does atleast have something between the ears though unlike Crompton.

at this point..one can only hope he or Coleman win the job from Crompton...they should both be fired up at the opportunity..hopefully it will be enough to beat J Cromp out in practice...I can't take another week of him passing to the camerman on the sidelines!

Let's all pray that either one of them gets a shot. At this point, it can't get any worse. Let them each play a half on Saturday and see what happens. Sometimes it is the little known guy that can pick a team up and give them a lift.

Yeah I remember some guy who looked like Val Kilmer coming in and playing as a freshman and being pretty good

All I want is a quarterback to run the offense effectively. That means throwing to different receivers, not locking on one receiver, hitting an open receiver, knowing what the plays and reads are, and fundamentally handing the ball off to a running back. I honestly dont think that is too much to ask for.

I wasn't comparing him to Bradford...just making a point that the star rankings aren't always accurate

If his problem is whether or not he has grasped the offense then he is a must start. Its not possible he "grasps the offense" any less than Crompton.

I just watched his videos from high school. The four things I got from watching it was
1. he can throw a screen pass, it was 85% of his highlights.
2. he can throw well on the run and accurately.
3. he has a strong arm.
4. He is slower than christmas. I would not have put his quarterback draws on the video. He only got two to five yards and didnt look too good.

I am ready for the change this weekend though. There is no way he can be much worse than crapton cause crapton has to get a lot better just to suck. Worst QB bust in Tennessee history.

I hope we start Crompton for the first series, then our next series put Stephens in just so we can see the smug look on JC's face when all 60,000 people in the stadium cheer. Seriously though, we don't need much out of this kid, just hit open receivers and don't fumble handoffs.

Stephens has a strong arm and decent ability to move around the pocket.

I don't know if he'll be any less prone to turnovers however, but it can't be much worse than it already is.

My first post here ...

I was thrilled beyond words to see that Phil opened the starting job this week, and I think Stephens will get the nod. The kid played high school ball in Texas ... and if anything can prepare a 20-year-old for the pressure cooker that is the SEC, the Friday night lights of Texas has got to be it. The wife and I were at the UAB game, and I'll give a kid credit when his first pass in a game is pinpoint-accurate, 42 yards down the sideline from his own end zone in front of 98,000. If he's got that kind of presence of mind, he's far superior to Crompton who quite plainly isn't all that bright! Right now we need the intelligence on the field more than anything, and this is the week to make the change. Give Nick a warmup before heading to Athens and the first of four critical SEC games in a row.

Didn't he get the nickname "Pick Nick" in spring practice? If thats true and he ended up being higher on the depth chart than Coleman that doesn't exactly make you feel real confident.
