Overall i thought he did very well.

He tried to force it a few times into double coverage and got lucky that he wasn't picked off.

But looks promising for the future....

My question is this...is the QB situation (playing JC for 4 games while Stephens was riding pine) indicative of the fulmer administration? Have there been better players on the bench that should've been starting for years? Have we been underachieving even when we were undefeated national champs?

Absolutely...I believe this to be the case with multiple positions. He has been doing this for years...

Fulmer's "loyalty" to players and staff (Randy Sanders as an example) is going to get him fired. I appreciate he wanted to give Crompton a chance. But if the competition had truly been open in the spring and early fall would Clawson have been able to install his offense in a greater way with Stehpens at the helm? It is OBVIOUS he can go through his progression of recievers much better. He has the arm strength and he has no fear in the pocket. That is with an O-line that cannot move the grass in front of them. Can he get better? Can he run the whole offense? All we do now is what has been done the last 7 or 8 years.

Let's not get carried away - he was 13 of 30. Those are JC numbers.

Hardly. There wasn't passes thrown to hot dog vendors, there wasn't 12 worm killed by footballs thrown into the ground, and Stephens smartly threw several balls away, with no interceptions. Plus, he didn't panic and take off running and get owned by a DB.

I thought he looked pretty good. He will stand in the pocket and scan his receivers. I thought he looked pretty good today

We can't tell how good Stephens is with the awful play of the O-Line and lack of running game.

i think that in one or two years, when Stephens has matured and foster is gone, were going to have a very good team with Stephens at QB, Hardesty and Creer at RB, and Gerald Jones/ Denarius Moore at WR. And was it just me does Denarius Moore seem to be Stephen's go to guy?

True - and no turnovers is a big improvement.
But 13/30 ARE JC numbers, so I am not going to get carried away.

13/30 > 8/23

yeah - huge improvement. Plus, JC's completion % is better than NS this year - again, that is not saying much.

But I am willing to say that excitement over a QB who is 13/30 says more about the state of the program's QB situation than it does about any fan's opinion.

Very true words.

would love to see what he could do if our running game was on par with what it should be. It would take some pressure off. He throws a pretty good ball. WIsh he would have played at Auburn. We would have won that game

The problem is not Stephens right now - it's the OL. They continue to be the most poorly coached position on the team, which is no surprise seeing that they have the 'hold-over' Adkins.

Stephens is not a great QB, but he seems to be making enough plays to keep us moving if we could run for 2 yards.

Absolutely correct. What happened to the offensive line this season? They were supposed to be our most reliable part of the team this year.

As for Stephens, I'm glad to see him in there. We might as well stick with him now. He certainly isn't performing much worse than Crapton, and he's much more inexperienced. I say let's give him a chance to develop. We all know any hopes of an SEC Championship or high profile bowl is out of the question this year, so there's no point in starting the proven failure Crompton who has already had his shot.

Let me ask you guys about the O-Line. Are we still putting our guys indifferent positions on the line depending on what play is called? I didn't notice it today, but have in every other game. That said, as a former O-lineman, it makes your blocking assignment much too complicated. You get used to playing on one side of the line and know the angle you need to take to make the block.

This line was servicable, not great, but servicable in the run game last year. They are all back so what is the problem? It has to be the new schemes.

We seem to already have millions of Fire Phil forums but I think we need a choke the living crap out of Greg Adkins forum before CPF throws him under the bus too. The OL is terrible. My one year old daughter could hold them at the line. I've never seen a bigger bunch of pansies in my life playing for UT. This was supposed to be the cream of the crop in the SEC? WOW!!!!!!!!!!:vava:

stephens is no manning or shuler, but he has a fair shot at being another kelly or clausen.

I'm hoping the former as he won two SEC championships in three years as UT's starting QB while picklehead won nothing in his four years as a starter.

It isnt about the number. It is about the difference in decisions. Nick makes much better decisions and his passes don't look like nervous panic shots. Nick will make mistakes too. But as long as he consistently makes them away from the darn goal line, then I will still support him over Crompton.

I mean, did anyone see the Jets game today? Favre makes stupid mistakes too and everyone praises him. He had stupid throws with a couple of INT's and he is a veteran.

How many picks has he thrown in the past 2 games (ignore the fumble which wasn't his fault)? then ask yourself if he is better that JC

Stephens will be a decent bridge to our next QB. If Stephens is still starting by the time he is a Senior, then we are in for a lot more misery.
