Neyland vs Autzen

When you guys were rolling in the first half, Neyland was as loud as Autzen, at least where I was sitting. Two of the three loudest Oregon home games ever were with OOC opponents: Michigan & Oklahoma. So, Autzen will be rockin' when you folks arrive, especially if the Vols are ranked. Bring your plugs if you're sitting in a Duck section.

BTW, thanks for the wonderful hospitality. Never a better reception anywhere.

I wasn't at Neyland so I can't and won't try and compare, but I've been to Autzen many many times. And wearing ear plugs is just good planning. I wear them every time I go and I usually sit about as far away from the student section as you can get. So basically, anywhere you are, it's good to have ear plugs with you.

I haven't been to Autzen ,and bank account willing I plan on going in 2013 ,but I'm just about willing to bet you can hear a conversation across the stadium when the Ducks go out on offense. I got so mad Sat night when the fans started singing Rocky Top when we were on offense. Sure I'm one of the loudest ppl there when we're on defense and I love having spirit ,but come on shut that stupid band up sit down and drink your drink when our unexperienced offense takes the field.

This. Fans should know to be quiet when TN's O is out on the field.

Because they're still in there, they're at least used to hearing it. It's not like the Buffalo Bulls coming in and all of a suddent being blown away. Regardless of whether or not they're on the field when the noise happens, having heard that amount of sound doesn't hurt when you finally have to hear it when you're on the field.

That doesn't make much sense. Used to hearing while standing on the sideline is not the same as being used to it while you are playing.

well, i dont know about fans from oregon. did you see how it affected the duck offense in the first half? if autzen is that loud then why did they have so many false starts and a delay of game

You do realize they shut it down when they are on offense do you?

It's not the same, but at least you've heard it.

And I've seen and heard UT run through the T probably 100 times, but until I'm on the field and in the environment I have no clue what to expect or how I will react.

Lets be honest here. The loudest college football sound ever recorded is 128 decibels I believe. That is not even close to loud enough to hurt your ears. Lets be realistic here.

My post fromt he other thread:

As a Cal fan that has been to both Autzen and Neyland...

I was in Neyland in 06 for the Cal game. There was a lot of pent-up angst from a disappointing prior year, and I don't think the locals were happy about this west coast pac 10 team (known for its liberal/hippy history) rolling in ranked higher than us and favored by a point. Without a doubt, as the Tennessee players came out of the T and entered the field... that was the loudest moment in any stadium I'm ever been to (and I'll be surprised if it is surpassed period). Tennessee fans in attendance said it was louder than any recent game to that point, perhaps only rivaled by some late 90s UT/UF games. And the roar/shaking upper deck when they scored their first TD still brings goosebumps.

I was also in Autzen in 2007. Peak noise did not seem as high, but the stadium is very, very loud. Most stadiums have a kind of linear 'build-up' in noise as their team is on defense that crescendo's towards its peak right before the snap. Autzen's does that too but it doesn't seem linear... it rises kinda exponentially and continues rising to a noise level beyond what you think a stadium of its size has any right to be.

Its worth noting that the Ore-Cal 2007 game was close throughout (though the 1st half was a miserably played football game... not so for the 2nd), while the UT/Cal game was over in the 3rd quarter.

One other difference... the fans. When I made the trip, i was a student, broke at the time, and made the trip for $50 total (slept against a UT library the 1st night). Several of my friends flaked but I was determined, and the trip was made possible because a Vol fan offered to drive me from Nashville to Knoxville on his way. He even put me up in a hotel the second night cause he felt bad the way the game unfolded. Also, TNFlower over on the UT scout forum (maybe here too) invited the entire Cal message board over for bbq... and IIRC she, her family and friends made ~200 lbs of southern bbq (something ludicrous like that) without asking a dime in return. Moreover, we met locals who offered to trade us jars of moonshine for Cal t-shirts (which we'd drink with them in the parking lots as we got it) and just in general... hospitality was off the charts.

Oregon fans are devoted, but we got waaaay more snide comments and pissed off replies after the game... though again, that may have been a byproduct of how the game unfolded. Not much in the way of 'southern hospitality', but I guess you can't expect that everywhere (though Cal fans made a concerted effort to return the favor to UT in 07).

I told everyone on the Oregon board that they needed to make the trip out to UT. Its a special place to watch a football game, thats for sure.

Talked to a Duck fan during the weather delay and asked him to compare the two stadiums. He agreed it was close, but that Autzen was a little louder but basically by design. He noted it was more of closed-in environment so the sound stayed within the stadium, even though the capacity isn't nearly equivalent. Regardless, he was impressed with Neyland and more so with co-eds. He admitted he wasn't expecting us to have such beatiful women here.

everyone is going to think there own stadium is the best or the craziest. I've heard numerous media members say Autzen is the loudest, its stadium is just set up that way. I'm glad we treated them well and they enjoyed it and spoke higher of it than the boredom that is "the big house".

I've said many times that the Cal fans that I encountered at the 06 game were some of this nicest opposing fans that I've ever seen. I'd have to say that the K-State fans at the 01 Cotton Bowl are probably my favorite opposing fans at a game I've ever been to but the Cal fans are probably a close second.

As a Vol fan on the west coast, I made the trip back to Knoxville with some friends who happened to be Oregon alums. They tailgated with my group of college friends and hung around the strip afterwards with everyone as well. Their sentiments could be summed up thusly:

Neyland was awe-inspiring for sheer size alone. They basically knew it was big coming in, but were not prepared to see it in person.

They had not experienced noise levels like those in Neyland. Coming in, they only talked about how Autzen was probably the loudest stadium in the country. After the game, they took that statement back.

Finally, and perhaps most proudly, they couldn't stop talking about how friendly the UT fans were. They said they had a few rude remarks thrown their way after the game, but outside that, they were impressed by all the compliments on the game, Vol fans' friendly demeanors and the offers of food/booze.

They can't wait for us to make the trip out there in 2013.

Adidas bought some tickets for it's employees and their friends in my section. They have a corporate headquarter in Portland and sent some Duck fans our way. I talked to several of them in length and I have to say, they were very friendly. They seemed to truly have an interest in wanting to know as much about our traditions as possible. When I got up to leave, they all wanted to shake my hand and tell me how much they appreciate the southern hospitaliy everyone had showed them. They all said we should try and make it out there so they could return to favor.

I think that's more a product of being a conference opponent. We're more like old neighbors than new hosts. :)

Besides, look at the Cal fan on this board, droski. He does a pretty good job making snide comments about Oregon every chance he gets.

Is it true what another Vol posted earlier that Cal fans actually booed the opening prayer at the UT game?

I thought the oregon an tennessee fans got along great. Saw lots of friendships and talking along the way. Now if tennessee was a heavy favorite and oregon beat them it woul be a different story. This is one of two hate weeks coming up. Expect several fights and hundreds of verbal confrontations.

The South Carolina game in the early somewhere between 2000-2002 seasons comes to mind. Cant remember what year exactly. I just remember that Holtz had been quoted during the week leading in that Neyland could not possibly get much louder than it already did.....

Well it was a night game, I was in the lower bowl, about 13 rows off the field on the 50 yard line. It was loud, really really as loud as I have ever heard it. At one point, the folks in the upper deck started stomping their feet and I remember thinking (as others noted around me as well) that it appeared that the upper deck way swaying a little bit. I just remember not being able to hear the person crammed in less than a foot away from me.

Notre Dame game around the same time frame was pretty loud as well. I had similar seats and remember being able to see the ND QB looking freaked out of his mind. Seriously, kids eyes were about as big as golf balls. I remember the crowd going quiet and the student section started whispering Darius (the QB's name) all in unison. That started to spread and most of the stadium was sort of whispering at once, which was somewhat creepy. Kid fumbled in the next 2 plays. That was cool.

Loudest I've ever heard Neyland was after Wilhoit's kick to beat FL in '04.

Not only was it loud but the friggin ground was shaking from 108,000+ jumping up and down in celebration. I mean I literally thought to myself "I hope Neyland doesn't collapse..."

If Autzen can beat that I'd be shocked.

Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly-

On the environment at Neyland Stadium:

"That's an unbelievable environment to play in out there. I mean, this place is impressive. I tell my players all the time `Don't look at the stadium,' but I was looking at the stadium."

Enough said.... But don't tell anyone else that. Autzen is clearly a superior stadium. Tic of course.

I work with Oregon Athletics and this last weekend was so incredibly impressed with Neyland, the fans, UT in general, the whole city of Nashville and really the great state of Tennessee. Everything bigtime's new friends said about their experience there (see below) I agree with 100%. Your fans are top notch, and an inspiration to programs like ours who are just developing an important heritage. That stadium is amazing. Yes, Autzen is loud, but Neyland is at least as much of a weapon, and maybe even more with the sheer numbers. We had the worst seats in the house (end zone, back row) and they were great. We could see everything, plus the view of the waterfront was incredible. Driving around the state I found the forests unexpectedly very beautiful, which is a very difficult compliment for an Oregon boy to utter. Mostly I was impressed with the people. Very few were hostile (there are always a few) but having been to many other big away games, I would say that the Vol fans are some of, if not the kindest, most inclusive, welcoming and dignified that I have ever seen. Please come to Eugene and let us extend the same hospitality!

So, some ducks made their way into the student section at the game last night. Me and Matthew Sullivan ended up talking to them quite a bit through out the game. Really nice people. They were very, very impressed with Neyland! As was I, even tho I was not pleased with the pregame support yesterday but I got over that quickly when the stadium erupted at Kickoff. I did question them on how Neyland compared to Autzen. They made sure to say that Neyland was right there with Autzen and by far the best they had been to outside of Autzen. We discussed the stadium layout and how it had impact on the loudness. They made sure to tell us how small Autzen is and how that helps with the loudness of the stadium and its reputation. They mentioned that they had been to places such as Michigan and Purdue and that they did not compare to Neyland. Also they mentioned how great our fans were, how respectful and nice we were to them. They got a lot of #'s and are looking forward to paying the Vols fans back for the kindness and awesomeness when we travel to Eugene. They also got into Rocky Top and some of our other chants. They were there to take in the atmosphere for sure.

No one has said your stadium isn't loud or can't be louder but I think you might be confusing as to what any Ducks fan has said. Of course in a special moment you will most likely be louder.......you have over a 100K! If you weren't I would be shocked. Now......what we are good at is being loud consistently and relentlessly and we have had this rep for awhile now. I am sure all of the bigger programs today have been able to say we were one of the loudest stadiums at one point in time or another. IMO I doubt if we are the loudest, seriously do but I do know we are a tough venue to come and visit and we won't stop. I remember Adrian Petersen saying Autzen was the loudest he had ever heard a college stadium. He routinely played in stadiums all bigger than Autzen.
