Neyland Turf

I think those days are long gone at Oregon ..... ;(
I was definitely a student back in those days. Even remember finding some growing in front of Johnson Hall where the university president's office is. Cracked me up. That's back closer to the days when they filmed "Animal House" there.

Now the focus is more about Business, Law, Pre-med, Journalism, Architecture.

Uh.....
National Lampoon's Animal House is a 1978 American comedy film directed by John Landis. The film is about a misfit group of fraternity men who challenge their college's administrators. The screenplay was adapted by Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller and Harold Ramis from stories written by Miller and published in National Lampoon magazine based on Miller's experiences in the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at Dartmouth College, Ramis' experiences in the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis, and producer Ivan Reitman's experiences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Ok, so? It was filmed on and around the University of Oregon campus.

Actually, the trend has been for facilities to go back to natural grass and away from turf.

I'd be interested to see the stats. I think a lot of schools went to artificial quite a while back, then switched back to natural due to injuries. Now I think the artificial surfaces have gotten better and schools are returning to artificial again. I don't have any stats, but it's just an impression.

Didn't say I've watched games there. I did an internet search of the stadiums and went off of that information. So which ones are wrong?

Off the top of my head Penn State, Florida and Texas A&M. OSU went to turf because the Columbus Crew started playing at Ohio Stadium.

Field turf is a lot better than the old turf, but it's still not as good as natural grass. The locations who go to field turf are typically areas which have trouble maintaining natural grass surfaces.

Here are the breakdowns of surface by conference...

ACC: 10 grass, 2 turf
Big East: 3 grass, 5 turf
Big Ten: 4 grass, 7 turf (Iowa switched from grass to turf for this season)
Big 12: 4 grass, 8 turf
Pac-10: 5 grass, 5 turf
SEC: 10 grass, 2 turf
BCS Total: 37 grass, 29 turf (includes Notre Dame Stadium)

For what it's worth, I found this. Also, found the following which indicated 8 of 10 PAC-10 schools using artificial turf. So I don't know how correct the data above is.

Will the new stadium have artificial turf?

Yes. The new playing surface will be an in-fill synthetic turf and it is infinitely better in terms of quality and aesthetics than the Astroturf that was the cause of so many injuries in the earlier eras. Synthetic turf will also save 4 million gallons of water a year. Eight of the ten schools within the Pac-10 conference will be utilizing this low maintenance artificial turf by the time Stanford Stadium is complete.

I stand corrected.....apologies.

No problem, here's a little trivia for you. During the filming of Animal House, the Curtis Selgado Band was playing at the Hotel where Beluchi and others were staying. The act they did was the original "Blues Brothers" act. And out of that came the movie.

Your stats only strengthen the notion that natural is the better option and first choice, but areas which struggle to maintain a natural grass (climate) go with the 2nd best alternative which is field turf.
