Neyland Turf

What kind of football are you watching? Easily 4/5ths of the stadiums in the country have real grass. Almost all of the non-domed college stadiums are grass. I can't name a big name school that plays in a non-covered stadium that doesn't have real grass...apparently only abominations like Oregon and Boise.

I just assumed that daddy phil knight (Nike) had designed cleats for his ducks that had built in sensors that automatically adjusted the spike lengths of the shoes to the turf/grass height on the run.
just to be accurate, we call him Uncle Phil

:eek:lol:

I've never seen Tennessee's field look anything but immaculately manicured during a game. The drainage is also second to none. We could have a torrential downpour, but the field will look dry 15 minutes later.

I'm guessing you weren't there for the Marshall game (the only UT game where the team did not run through the T) in 2006. There was a deluge and the field never dried. It was amazing they could even stand up without slipping that day.

Given that it's a grass field and my Ducks don't play on grass very often and that' teams have been known to alter natural surfaces to hamper opponents. Do you expect Tenn to play any of those games to slow down the Ducks?

Notre Dame did a blatant job of this against USC a couple years ago. I'd swear that the grass was longer than the ruff at the local coarse. Also, pretty wet and slippery.

Just asking

As a resident of the the state of Indiana, I keep tabs on our local teams as well and I very distinctly remember the game in question here...yes the grass was long at ND that day, and yes it was WET...because if you go back and look at the meterological data, Indiana was having one of the wettest late summers / early falls ON RECORD (I also know this because hay prices spiked to almost $7 a bale due to the grass being to wet to cut and dry!!!) Also, while they do have excellent facilities, ND doesn't cut their grass as often as the folks down south can, so it looks good for the TV folks.

So all of this taken into consideration, I would back up the truck and rethink your OP...thanks and we hope you enjoy your visit to the greatest sports stadium in the country...NEYLAND!

Having marched on the field at ND, that was worse than practice fields I've used at SEC schools.

It was still the best away trip I've ever taken.

Exactly what I mean crusse, Indiana's field isn't much better, but still they insist on holding DCI and BOA regionals in Bloomington...nice to go and watch because its close to home, but some kids say they have marched on high school fields that are better...

I'll admit, I'm a bit surprised by the defensive nature of some of the posts to my question. Some very thoughtful and knowledgeable. As for being 14, my grandkids are 18 & 19.

Yea, without going in to it, Penn St, Ohio St, Michigan, Texas A&M, Florida, Wake, Minn, and Navy are just a few who play on artificial turf. Seven of the ten PAC-10 school play on artificial turf. I suspect it's more of a weather issue than anything. I'd expect northern schools to be playing on more artificial turf.

The Vols play big-time football in the greatest stadium in college football, in the best conference, no less. The Ducks know big-time football... but, you are coming into Knoxville for a game experience you'll remember the rest of your life. Pure thrill.

Pre-season polls are really iffy. Where will the Ducks be mid-season? We do not know, neither do you. Will the Vols still be ranked the 5th-best team in the SEC-East? Doubt it, but we also do not know. The fact that Oregon is coming here ranked 11th is in and of itself enough to get our guys all jacked up.

Hope the Ducks enjoy the day and lose the game and that we win with class.

The OP is just plain dumb. No other way to say it. Oregon will be favored in this game (rightly so), but I wouldn't go so far as to say that Oregon is one of those programs that strikes fear in the heart of its opponents--especially when said opponent has played the National Champion four out of the past five seasons and plays in the SEC.

Come to think of it, this makes the OP look even more ridiculous. I am just shaking in my boots, I tell you. Get real.

No they don't. You obviously never watched a game at half of those stadiums.

Florida has played on grass since 1990.
Penn St plays on natural grass as well
Texas A&M has played on Tifway bermuda since 1996

I think some of your information is a little outdated grandpa. This took about 3 minutes on google and wikipedia

As for Wake, Minn, and Navy? I'd hardly call them big name programs. And as for 7 of the 10 Pac10's, I didn't bother taking the time to research them, because no one in the country cares about them anyway. There are 2.5 Pac10 teams: USC, UCLA, and sometimes Oregon. And USC and UCLA sport real grass.

Ohio State and Michigan I find disappointing, but certainly support your case. I do admit that some of the schools are now installing new field turf, but I don't see that becoming too widespread among traditionalists.

I think Texas may have gone to artificial, but I'm not entirely sure. I just remember watching one of their games last year and noticing that nobody was dirty and the field looked perfect all game, usually a sign of artificial turf.

I thought IU's stadium used artificial turf? I coould have sworn I read an article about a sinkhole or something causing IU to replace the turf before the 2008 DCI championships and IU football season.

Texas just put in field turf in 09. Also disappointing. I hope this doesn't become an epidemic. I just don't see traditional SEC schools going that route.

Everyone loved it when we went back to playing on grass at Neyland. Granted, the new field turf they use is pretty awesome. I've had a chance to play on a few of these fields myself, but it's not like real grass.

I honestly wouldn't mind it too much. I've marched on it and like the feel. I also think it looks better. It never dies, it never needs to be cut, the colors and symmetry of logos are always just right. The only issue I have is how hot artificial turf can be early in the season. Sometimes the intramural field on campus can turn a hot day into an unbearable day.

IU was natural grass from 1998 to 2003, then went to Astro (due to the prodding of DCI = $$$), then something else (I think) and then the sinkhole debacle of 2008. Now they have the new Field Turf. I haven't been to a game or anything there yet to see...but I hear it is a marked improvement over the old grass field.

Never understood the argument.

If high grass slows down fast players, what does it do to slow players? Halt any progress?

Didn't say I've watched games there. I did an internet search of the stadiums and went off of that information. So which ones are wrong?
